This is nice and bready but also the slightest bit Smokey which was unexpected. It also has a cocoa quality to it. It’s nice but with a name like it has, I expected more.

Pretty sure I’ve had this sample for a while – not actually sure how old it is and I wasn’t sure if it would still be any good or not. It was, though! I had a hearty tea session; longer steeps and more tea steeped at a time – kind of a Western meets Gongfu merger, if you will? It was thick and viscous with strong cocoa powder notes accompanied by notes of freshly baked bread & a starchy sweetness. Hints of red fruit in the undertones, but more focus on the round, coating body of the sip. I can see why this hong cha is award winning!!

It’s a beautiful day in the neighborhood. I retired three days ago after working for over 50 years. I am optimisitic and hopeful about the rest of my life. I can’t think of a better way to contemplate the future than while sipping a new black tea sample, compliments of Teavivre.

When I opened the two-cup silver sample package and sniffed the rich earthy aroma of the unbrewed golden-tipped leaves, I knew I was in for a treat.

I followed the instructions on the package and brewed the leaves for five minutes at 185 degrees. The resulting liquor was a bright amber color. The odor was sweet with honey-like undertones.

The flavor of this tea was quietly sweet, with well-blended fruity, bread, and sweet potato attributues. The entire experience was remarkably smooth as silk with no astringency in its orbit. This was one of those teas that was so velvety serene that I had to restrain myself from gulping it down. There was zero astringency and the aftertaste was mild and welcoming.

This is an exceptional black tea that would be a pleasing addition to breakfast or afternoon desserts. It is very easy to see why it is an “award winning” selection.

So last time I wrote in here I was mentioning a slight headache from a tea and I never have headaches. Since then I was literally laid out. That headache progressed to something I can’t even begin to describe. 48 hrs down. I once had a bad stomach flu years ago, back when I was still living in San Diego. This was similar. Was it the tea or the cup of jasmine rice I had earlier or was it the stomach flu? I don’t know. Having said that, I’m much better today.

So I stayed away from tea since then and now that I’m feeling better. I am starting my morning with these delicious infusions of black tea. I’ve had 3 bananas and some homemade kefir in 48 hrs. o.O

It’s malty-sweet potatoes-cocoa mellowness in a cup. Enjoying it after a harrowing 48 or so hours. The liquor has a pretty bright orange tint and smelled of yams. There are some floral notes but not much. No astringency nor bitterness, calming… Exactly what I needed.

Porcelain gaiwan 110ml, 5g, 185℉, 6 steeps: rinse, 10s, 10s, 15s, 20s, 30s, 40s

This tea is charming, full bodied and flavorful thru 6 brews. I was surprised at the richness and full body for a tippy tea. Very classy. One of my will buy again pricey teas because it is so great.
