Herbal Tea by The Republic of Tea

Cup of Dessert Herb Tea
The rich, exotic taste of this herbal infusion combines coconut and chocolate to produce a thick, naturally sweet, tropical cup. The delicious taste of both cocoa and carob belies their nutritional value. Enjoy at any latitude as a warming, low-calorie cup of dessert.

Ingredients: Roasted carob, caramel malted barley, roasted chicory, dates, natural coconut flavor, cocoa powder and natural chocolate flavor.

The tea bags smell fairly caramel-y with some cocoa notes and a bit of coconut. Brewed, I can smell the barley plus some sweetness and perhaps coconut. The taste is seriously surprising. The barely and caramel combine in a way that makes me think of some sort of baked and glazed dessert. The coconut and cocoa are more accent notes to the sweet, roasted barley, adding to the almost-savory-yet-still-dessert-like feeling. The last sip is the only cocoa-y sip; it looks like there is some cocoa sludge that settled at the bottom.

It’s not at all what I expected – I thought it’d be more sweet and desserty but it’s darker and more grain sweet – but I’m really grooving on it. So much so that I finished my cup and then I finished the husband’s when he turned his nose up at it. Tasty.

This is so much better than I had expected. I love coconut and I love chocolate, so this tea is right up my alley. The fact that it’s herbal had me a bit worried. I wondered if the lack of black tea or even rooibos would make it weaker somehow.
I think maybe it is even more impressive because the flavors stand on their own.

I agree that it needs to be brewed stronger for it’s full effect. But then, WOW this is one good cuppa! I downed the whole pot before it had even cooled. Chocolate and coconut! There’s also a malty flavor there, maybe the barley or the carobs.

I really like this!

Got this tea from French Vanilla in a swap. Thanks so much for sending some of this my way!

The scent when brewing is heavenly. It reminds me of scrumptious desserts, chocolate and coconut macaroons, toasted coconut cream with chocolate drizzle. Wow, does this smell amazing!

This tea is a little boring neat, so I added a tiny bit of honey to it, brings out more of the toasted coconut taste. I can see enjoying this occasionally. The smell is spectacular and the taste is enjoyable, once honey is added.

Got a sample of this from Jillian and decided I needed to try it this morning.

Unsweetened – this is very toasty-coconut, not so much cocoa.

Sweetened – the creamy, almost oily flavor came out much more, and a little more cocoa flavor.

Overall, this is a nice tisane, but not one I’d actively seek out. I’d want either more cocoa or another flavor (spices or something similar) in order for this to be a drink I’d want again. I do apprecaite the opportunity to try it however. (Thanks Jillian)

Thanks to whatshesaid for sending me this to test out :)

This smells amazing. It’s just cooling and the scents of chocolate and coconut are wafting my way enticingly. Gah!

This tea nailed the coconut flavour. It tastes just like coconut! And chocolate! But not overwhelmingly, sickeningly sweet chocolate (probably because it’s cocoa). Just delicious. I may actually add this permanently to my cupboard. I’m not sure what I was expecting, but it wasn’t anything like this. YUM.

Update: The second resteep was pretty good, definitely much less flavourful, but I still downed my cup haha.

frenchvanilla sent me some of this to try. Thanks so much!!!

I’m not sure about the smell of this…not gonna lie, I thought the smell was coming from my dinner (breaded chicken, mashed potatoes, biscuit) at first, and then I realized, no, it’s coming from the teapot. o.O So, yeah…this smells very savory to me!!

It tastes very toasted coconut to me, though it seems more strongly toasted than coconut. Not really getting much on the cocoa side, but it’s there in the aftertaste. Still can’t believe how much this smells like my dinner! I think I’ll hold off on rating it for now…and will try steeping for 10 minutes as well.

This is yum. I brew it at double strength because I found that it was a little weak the first time I steeped it, and at double strength it seems just right – very chocolate-y, very coconut-y, very yummy!

Backlogging: I had some of this last night while watching a movie with the hubby. I find that this tastes MUCH better when brewed stronger, I used 3 tea bags in my 12 ounce (approx) mug, and it turned out wonderfully.

Hmmm… this has to be the strangest smelling tea ever. While steeping, it smells kind of like fried food (apparently from the barley in the mix). The tea is a bit savory and buttery tasting. It is quite thick and chocolaty with a bit of coconut. This is definitely a unique tasting tea. I’m not sure whether I would purchase this or not (maybe if it was available loose rather than just in bags). Prepared with almond milk and stevia.

Another swap! YAY!
The smell of this totally reminds me of a vegan chocolate coconut cookie I used to make a while back. That’s exactly what it smells like.

The flavorings are high but the tea taste itself is a little weak.

It’s certainly a dessert tea, indeed. Not bad but certainly not one I would drink everyday!

So happy to add it to my stash tho! Thanks Nicole!

Understeeped and it’s all about the coconut. Today I am ok with that…I wonder, tho, what it would taste like if I infused for 10 minutes for the full richness and added Chocolate Soymilk or Chocolate Almond Milk??? I just might have to try that out!

Well, I must say that this one smells divine. Like a Mounds bar, which I enjoy greatly whenever I have them, which isn’t often. It’s making me want one now.

Drinking, it’s a little thinner than I’d really like, considering how rich it smells, but it’s still a nice flavour. I like it.

Oh, this is lovely! I was not expecting to love it so much. I picked it up at whole foods today (can’t leave without tea, you know?) and decided to have it after dinner (which was curry, so I thought the coconut would go well.) The leaves smell like barley – not much cocoa, and no real coconut. I opened up two tea bags, put them in my infuser basket, and brewed 14 oz of tea.

I let it steep for 10 minutes, based on the reviews on Steepster that it needed extra time. The initial aroma was still of barley, but then I smelled some cocoa coming through. I took a sip – surprisingly, this is all about the dark, unsweetened cocoa. I can’t detect much coconut. I added a splash of milk and a dash of sugar, as I do to all dessert teas. This brought out the coconut slightly, but it is still in the background. The cocoa, once sweetened lightly, blends with the barley to make a taste that is really different. I love it – it’s not too sweet or heavy, and it’s a bit exotic. I think it would work iced as well. Republic of teas is a bit pricey, but I do love these “cuppa chocolate” teas!

Imagine the Samoas girlscout cookies in a warm, fuzzy liquid form. That’s what this tea reminds me of. A bit of milk — 2% or vanilla almond and a couple spoons of sugar. The cocoa flavor of it is just enough of a hint, but not so much that you forget it is actually tea. The coconut smell and flavor is very crisp and delightful. I was sad when I learned it had barley, as I’m working toward going gluten free — but I wont let this tea go to waste in that process. I like it a lot, and if I end up unable to finish it I will definitely pass it along to another tea lover to enjoy. It’s great anytime of day, but adds a nice touch as an after dinner treat.

I really liked this dessert tisane. The coconut pairs well with the cocoa. It is a lot like hot cocoa, but with no fat or sugar. You can even kick it up a little by adding milk for that creamy hot cocoa flavor. I was significantly surprised with this one.

It had a very good coconut with a touch of chocolate/cocoa smell to it. When I tasted it, that same smell had a matching flavor that alternated in sips with a old, possibly bad, coconut milk flavor. After 3 or 4 sips, all I could taste was the bad coconut milk and I decided I didn’t want to finish it. The points are primarily for smell.

Finally a coconut tea that actually has more than a token association with the actual thing (I’m looking at YOU Coconut Chai!). It’s very coconuty-smelling but there’s a sort of malty note that’s almost cocoa…but not quite. It took me awhile to realize what it made me think of – hot Ovaltine. And when I tasted it – yep, Ovaltine tea with a bit of coconut added to it – which isn’t all that bad since I like Ovaltine.

Mmmm, I’ve discovered that this tea goes remarkably well with a spoonful of hot chocolate mix added to it. ;D

The tea is more chocolately-tasting after a longer steep – or rather, caroby-tasting as I can usually pick up a slight difference in the taste of the two – though I’m a big fan of both.

I added milk, which I’m not usually wont to do with herbal-based teas, but this one is definitely complimented by it; I think it’s the carob and the malt in the blend.

This tea gets richer and sweeter with a longer steeping time. It still makes me think of coconut-flavoured Ovaltine though – more malty than chocolatey

Enjoyable! This was a surprise because I’m so jaded by so-called chocolate teas. I didn’t have to search for the cocoa or the coconut, both tasted natural and there were no ‘off’ flavor notes at all — smooth sailing. It is a little thin but there’s enough flavor to not be dissatisfying, just give it a good long steep, as my brethren here suggest. Drank with nothing added.

I’m currently attempting to replace sugary sweet foods with dessert teas. I’m also trying to avoid sugar period, so I’m looking for unsweetened teas that I don’t need to sugar up (expect I might cave in to a little honey here and there) to enjoy. I decided to get the chocolate tea sampler box from Republic of Tea to give them a try for my dessert tea mission.

Of all the options in the box I was most excited to try this Coconut Cocoa – and it didn’t disappoint! I made a small cup (right around or slightly below 8 oz) with one tea bag, letting it steep for a little over 5 minutes using boiling water. I find I enjoy RoT much better with two bags and slightly longer steep times though.

The smell definitely is “malty” to me. I definitely tasted hints of coconut and chocolate, but the barley flavor won out, which wasn’t ideal but it didn’t suck either. Will definitely experiment with the other bags in my sampler box (maybe two to a cup next time) though I’m not sure if I’d buy this or use it as one of my go-to dessert teas.

The most richly chocolate-coconut tisane I could have imagined. This is my favorite dessert tea!

This tea is just okay for me. I had heard really good things about it, but it wasn’t as delicious as expected. It has a beautiful coconut scent, not so much cocoa included. For me, it tasted a bit watered down and uneventful.

my fiance’s mom gave me a few bags of this to try today, and I might have to go get my very own tin of it. It’s so different, and I love coconut!
next time maybe i’ll try some honey
