From The Tea Haus

Genmaicha is also known as ‘brown rice tea’. It is sometimes referred to as “popcorn” tea because a few grains may pop during the production, hence resemble the look of ‘popcorn’. This type of tea was originally drunk by ‘common’ Japanese – the rice was added to reduce the cost of the tea. This tea is also known as ’people’s tea’. Japanese Bancha with toasted rice. This combination gives a nutty flavour!

This has soooo much toasted rice in it that it really takes over the flavor. That leaves space for just the slightest touch of grassy umami to come through. It’s toasty and it’s comforting and it’s light and it’s good. Always forget how much I enjoy a cup of genmaicha until I have it.
