From The Tea Spot

This is an authentic Chinese West Lake Dragonwell and considered to be one of the world’s finest green teas. Its narrow and flat leaves produce a soothing aroma when brewed. Lung Ching tastes delicate and rich, and has a slight hint of chestnut flavor. The leaves are picked and hand processed in early spring when the mountains are still shrouded in mist. They have a thin, delicate appearance with a golden sheen and give a pale green infusion that’s lightly sweet and tremendously fragrant.

I am suddenly surrounded by Dragonwell teas! I have several options:
Mrs. Li’s Spring Harvest Shi Feng 2013 – Verdant TOMC May
Mrs Li’s 1st picking 2013 – Verdant Reserve TOMC
Dragonwell style autumn laoshan green 2012 – Verdant
Org. nonpareil ming qian dragonwell (TeaVivre)
Org Superfine Dragonwell long jing (TeaVivre)
There is also an older Tin of Dragonwell from long ago when I was in love with Dragonwell & ordered a bunch of it. Once I got more into black & oolong tea, it sort of disappeared into the back of my cupboard, & was only re-discovered recently. It’s probably not very good, I think it’s 10 years old or so…

So…I have all these dragonwells. Luckily I enjoy them, but probably not often enough, & rather than allow them to join that tin & become relics, I need to start drinking them. I’m also curious to figure out how much they really differ from one another.

This one has a pleasant green taste with a hint of smoke.
And now it’s gone.

I made a cup of the ‘aged’ dragonwell, & it was terribly bitter & stale. I count that as a sipdown, as it’s no longer drinkable. I’m sure it will make good compost!

Which Dragonwell is your favorite?

Which Dragonwell is my favorite? I have no idea, LOL!
I keep drinking them, trying to compare them. I’ve tried lining them all up, brewing small cups of each, & doing a taste test, & I honestly can’t say that its conclusive. For some reason when I try to drink them side by side, I’ll notice differences but I can’t quantify/describe them, if that makes sense. So I think I’m just gonna keep drinking one a day for awhile (or at least one green tea of some kind per day), & maybe I’ll have an answer in a week or 2? :)

true! They are ALL nice Dragons (except the one that is now becoming compost, & it was really nice 10 years ago, LOL).

87 tasting notes

This is actually the second time I’ve tried this, but I was unable to write a review sooner.

The liquor itself is very light in color, even lighter than many of the greens I’ve had in the past. The aroma of the tea in the cup was very mild, almost non-existent. However, the wet leaf aroma is pungent and almost earthy. I’m having trouble finding just the right word to describe the this scent.

As for the tea itself, it’s a very mellow green tea. A very light background note of roasted flavor, but it’s almost not even noticeable.

This tea is very nice a subtle, but I’m not sure I’d drink it too regularly. I don’t care too much for green teas and usually enjoy a heartier flavor, so this may be in part related to the fact that I’ve had a lot of green and white tea today and none of the stronger flavors I normally consume in such vast quantities.

most ‘good’ quality Lung Ching/longjing/Dragon well teas have a note of nutty almost pistachio that can be an elusive flavor.

Oh, yes! I think “nutty” is the scent I couldn’t pinpoint. It was mostly just with the wet leaves, though. Not really present in the tea too much.

For me, dragonwell teas often have a “stoney” flavor, but I’ve also had one that was kind of citrus-y in a surprising way. Nut is a good word, too- I never think of it that way. But it’s true the Dragonwell is such a standard because the ideal is just so sweet and smooth… and that can sometimes be underwhelming.

50 tasting notes

I finished off my sampler of this today. I was about to write down a tasting note and then I noticed how alike my thoughts were to what I wrote down before! I have tasted more teas now, and I still like this. The flavors were three and clear for the first steeping: first nutty, then a vegetal taste and a mild bitterness together. The second steeping saw them all fade. I would buy this again but I am off to seek some other dragonwell samples. I did pick up a faintly sweet aftertaste. Everything about this cup is delicate.
