Turzum Tea Estate is another tea garden owned by the Jayshree Tea people. Turzum is well known for its excellent clonal variety and has excelled in quality production. Each tea season Turzum comes out with some excellent invoices and this Darjeeling First Flush 2012, we bring you the finest First Flush Darjeeling Tea invoice from Turzum. Due to its high altitude, Turzum Tea Estate always flushes slower than other tea gardens and this time too Turzum followed its tradition of flushing late. We were provided several invoice samples, but the first invoice “DJ 1” won our hearts and we procured it. We had to undergo a lot of bidding on this tea as it was liked by other companies as well. We had to get this tea anyhow and thus had to do the highest bidding as well. One top notch First Flush 2012 clonal tea which you will remember through years to come.

Turzum SFTGFOP1 Clonal Delight Dry Leaves:
The general outlook of this First Flush clonal tea is the most important factor that attracted us first – magnificent leaf appearance. A clonal graded tea made with utmost care in manufacture retaining all the essential characteristics for which this tea has excelled. The tea leaves are elongated with those longish shape, well rolled and twisted. The overall color texture is greenish which can be seen with a beautiful blend of light and bottle green colors. The bottle green which we are describing may seem black from a distance but on closer inspection it has that embedded mixture of chocolate brown and bottle green colors. It has high content of elongated silver tips or buds which is accompanied by some golden buds as well. Most of the tea leaves seem clad in white furry coat or silver hairs giving the tea a definite luster and bloom. It has a sweet aroma which comes mingled with a mild cake like, pastry character. It also has that mild caramelized character with a nutty finish. It has a fresh floral scent of wild flowers and imparts a certain fruity character which seems somewhat like fresh cut apples.

Another awesome Darjeeling from Thunderbolt Tea! The dry leaves are even more varigated and tippy [& more furry too!] than the Sungma. The leaves are very sweet-like cake with caramel icing. Or is it vanilla?? The tea also exhibits a mildly fruity & floral nose. Steeping leaves are more vegetal, sweet, fruity & floral…….with what seems like a light minty quality. The wet leaves are sweet and vegetal, with a crisp fruity character, a mild spiciness, & an ever so gentle, nutty aspect as well.

Cup is very light yellow-orange color, with a sweeter, more floral nose than the Sungma previously cupped. A definite buttery aroma is very apparent as well. Initial tasting is very smooth & mild on my palate, with a buttery texture. The tea transforms with a crisp, brisk tang [not harsh] or spice on my palate! Along with this zesty character comes mild fruits & almonds. A pleasant & mild astringency lingers on my palate to complete a wonderful tea experience! :))

There’s nothing like this extraordinary Darjeeling from the Turzum Estate to complete a wonderful day! It’s also the perfect way to mark my one year Anniversary on Steepster, as well as my 100th tasting review!! Steep on Steepies!! :D

Hehehee…….Thanks. to get to 100 reviews yesterday I drank 9 cups of tea! I think I like this Darjeeling a tad better. It has a bit more astringency, which is still very mild compared to some other FF Darjeelings. :D

Everyone and their kitchen sink was singing the praises of this one. It was getting mildly frustrating, especially since I hadn’t even heard of the Turzum estate before. This was the first invoice of Turzum’s first flush crop. And it shows.

If there’s one thing that can be said for the aroma and appearance, it’s that it screams, “FRESH!!!” Like a good first flush should, it brewed light, tasted light, but carried with it so many flavor sensations – some requisite for a Darjeeling, others new. A damn fine first of the first.

An aptly named tea: truly a delight!

1st steep: Lovely stone-fruit smell with hints of honey and orange marmalade. The aroma is so good that I just smell the tea, not bothering to drink it! The taste is soft and full and continues the stone fruit flavors with an earthy undercurrent. The taste seems to grow in the mouth, leading to a very good, very long finish. The flavors changed subtly as the tea cooled, but in no way diminished in quality.

This is the way tea is meant to be. I should probably give this a score of 100, but the earthy flavors contain a hint of bitterness, and the stone fruit doesn’t carry all the way through the finish. Also, the cup finished with some bitterness.

2nd steep: Same basic flavors but more subdued.
