From Tisano

In India tea has it’s roots in Ayurveda, a wholestic approach to medicine focusing on food and lifestyle. From there, India’s most popular beverage – Masala Chai, “Spiced Tea,” was born. Tisano takes this 5,000 year old tradition into the 21st Century – we source estate grown Assam Black Tea leaves, cloves, cinnamon, cardamom and other spices to create a unique sweet and spicy chocolate Chai Cacao Tea.

This is probably my record thus far, taking three years to write about a tea. For shame. To be fair, I had my Tisano blends packed up 100km from me for nearly two of those years, scarily enough, so I didn’t even get access to them again until nearly half a year ago.

Sipping on this two years past the best before sticker, I was expecting epic grossness but it hasn’t changed too much at all. This was never heavy on the traditional chai spices, but rather merely focusing on cinnamon alongside the cacao shells. This reminds me a lot of a DAVIDsTEA blend I experienced many years ago. I want to say Super Chocolate? This is like Aztec hot chocolate without the chillies.

This is also a sipdown since I only had a couple cups left anyway. Should have just polished it off back in Victoria!

It’s nice when something you had forgotten about turns out to be pleasant enough, or even delicious.
Today I hauled out something well past its due date and was happy to see that it was just fine.

And you were fortunate to have experienced a lot of DTs before they started messing around with things.

Ha, weird, I find it’s rather heavy on the cinnamon. Kind of like Aztec hot chocolate stuff.

Backlog:

When I first ordered this tea, I anticipated it being a masala chai blend with cacao shells. I had not expected it to be a tea with Camellia Sinensis in it! But it is! That makes me all the happier with it.

I love cacao shells. Love them. I think that it is the best choice for a rich chocolate flavor in a steeped beverage. Nibs are ok, but, shells seem to deliver more chocolate flavor in my opinion.

In this chai, the chocolate is very rich and prominent. Happiness! This chocoholic is happy. Beneath the chocolate flavor is the rich malty notes of Assam. More happiness.

The spices are not as strong as I generally like in my chai. I like a good, spicy chai. But I also have an appreciation for a subtler approach with the spices like this chai takes. This is flavorful and the spices are nicely balanced.
