Assam

Black Tea by two leaves and a bud

From two leaves and a bud:
Assam Tea is famous for its lush flavor and golden color. Rich brown leaves with golden tips yield a distinguished multi-layered “malty” flavor. We have chosen a traditional, orthodox full leaf tea. Full bodied, deep gold in color, Assam tea is the perfect breakfast tea. The oldest tea growing region of Assam in NE India has low, rolling hills creating a great environment for rich tea. Hot days combined with cool nights bring out the fullest flavor.

This one came in the complete sampler kit that was a gift from my ‘buds’ at Two Leaves (har, har, I kill me). The sampler is a neat way to try out some new teas. I grabbed this one for my morning cup. I have never had a whole leaf Assam before. I thought I wouldn’t much care it. I’ve always called Assam beige. Then again all I have had before is dust in a bag. This one I really like. Its fruity kind of like cherry and sweet. There is no bitterness. The malt is a nice touch. Got two mugs from the leaf gorged sachet.

it’s 7:30 PM and I am having an Assam. Ok, multiple cups. The coffee cake demands it. :) see previous notes.

After reading my initial review (really more of a horror story) about my experience trying the Tamayokucha green tea from Two Leaves and a Bud, I received an email from the Marketing Coordinator of the company. She was sad to hear about my terrible experience and wanted to ensure that I had an opportunity to make the tea myself for its full true effect.

I just received the package today and was excited to see more than just a few samples of the Tamayokucha, but some of this Assam as well as the “Better Rest Blend” herbal tisane. As I have been quite in the mood for a black tea lately, I picked out one of the Assam samples and brewed it up.

The liquor is a lovely deep amber color and gives a nice malty, bitter aroma. I first tried the tea plain and found it surprisingly smooth. The bitterness in the aroma was mellowed quite a lot and left more of a sweet after-taste than I anticipated. I added some sugar and milk and this was transformed even further into a particularly delicious breakfast tea for me.

Despite the fact that it is a bagged tea, it actually rivals some of the loose breakfast blends I have. Well done, I say!

I can’t stop drinking this tea of a busy morning. I’ve started noticing that each morning that I’m in a rush and need to get a quick tea fix, this is the first thing I grab! I’m almost out, so I really need to order a box sometime soon.

I really cannot express enough how impressed I am with this. By no means is it the most superb breakfast tea I’ve had, but it’s very good and I’m always surprised at how tasty it is coming in a bag and all.

Just enjoyed more of the Assam this morning. Took it in a travel mug prepared with milk and sugar in advance. This was exactly the right way to wake myself up this morning! Delicious, malty, and creamy (though you have to admit, it had to be the milk that added the creaminess! ;) ).

In any case, much like my previous commentary on this, it’s just a very nice, delicious tea to start the day! Moving my rating up a wee bit to account for my increased regard for this one.

This one is nowhere near as good as the Assam Breakfast sachet. Bleh! Though judging by the other notes, maybe the milk at this coffee shop was bad? In that case, I’ll stick to the one on campus that has Assam breakfast…

Bagged but bold!

This is a creamy malty not an overly-bold or strong manly malty. It’s still of good strength so we will go with a medium strength bold and malty description. It ‘brews’ quickly and is rather good. I’m very pleased with this morning cuppa.

Just before leaving the office for a tick(tock) I decided to throw a bag of this in some hot water…it did the job…see previous notes…

Randomly pull this one from my stash and am drinking it now. My last cuppa left a funky aftertaste so I had to do something QUICK.

See my previous review notes for this one…

Just because it was there…backlogging…

I acquired a few more bags of this and wanted a quick last cup before leaving my desk! This did the trick! See previous notes :)

Unscheduled overnight at the farm last night (father hospitalized, mom convalescing and can’t stay alone, lousy night’s sleep due to items a and b) so I was glad to have this neat little sachet bag to throw in my bag. Left well past its prime, it was still good and bready, but definitely dark rye or pumpernickel instead of a nice golden wheat.

I really like this Assam. It has a very pleasant malty tone to it. Sweet notes and very rich in taste. NICE!

A Classic pick me up and traditional brew! Its perfect to drink straight up and to drink it “cuppa style” with lots of sugar and/or milk early in the morning or afternoon. The tea not bad at all, not as stong and assertive as one may think of Assams teas but it delivers just the best amount of kick and character normally expected of Assams. The flavor was quite balance with a good amount maltiness and a little starchiness that gives this tea its comforting nature begging its dear drinker for more than a cup!

This tea has a pleasant aroma and a smooth taste, along with a nice malty undertone. However, I wouldn’t consider it a great breakfast tea. Honey is the predominant flavor that unfortunately masks everything else. It is a nice afternoon tea, but it’s not quite bold enough to wake me up in the morning. It is actually too smooth and soft, if that makes any sense.

This tea is a T.J.Maxx special at 1.99 (4 sachets) and its actually a very good tea. Its a whole leaf tea in a sachet. Its 100 per cent Assam and the tea is very malty. It has a sweetness and a nice full body to it. I have had better Assams, but not in a tea sachet. Tried a second steep as it said on the box, but no luck there. Too weak.

Its been a crazy day, 6 inches of rain and 16 hours w/o electricity. On top of that, I had no way to make any tea until now. I just can’t believe its been raining on the coast of Maine in Feb. On to the tea… This assam is very tasty and malty, I have had worse assams that were loose leaf. I’m thinking of going back and buying more of this tea tomorrow. Its a really nice smooth cup of tea with no bitterness.

Right now I’m craving this tea which means I will be at T.J.Maxx when it opens to buy whatever stock they still have on hand of this tea. This is really a smooth malty assam tea.
Its a loose leaf tea in a pyramid tea bag. I may open the bag next time and steep the normal way to see what happens.

Good lord this is delicious! No bitterness for miles.
Uh oh, dangerous that I’ve discovered it now _ watch out, office tea supply.

About a year ago, I decided that I was only going to buy clothes that I was obsessed with and couldn’t stop thinking about, so that eventually every morning that I got dressed would be an exciting event. I made this same type of decision last night about food and drink: to really, really WANT everything I eat or drink, from now on. Not only that, but to feel like it will only make me feel great afterward, rather than sluggish or regretful. It’s working so far!

Still more work, still more work to do…

Lots of work, lots of work to do…

Oh god, I put one spoonfull of brown sugar too many in this one!

+ brown sugar + milk!

I agree with the sweetness, a bit much for me. I drink it mid morning, very decent!

This tea is a fine Assam and stronger than other bagged Assams I have tried. I like the aromatics and the flavour finish. Try bagging it for a little shorter than the recommended time. Bonus points to 2L+AB for a compostable plastic bag and sachet.

At the coffee shop, I needed a tea to drink. This tastes like a standard run of the mill bagged Assam. Medium body, clean finish, a little drying on the back outer edges of the palate, I’m unimpressed. However, it’s better than nothing. 50/100. New to tea? Try this one. It’ll grow on you. I’m glad to have hot lightly flavored water on a cold, rainy classic Ohio autumn afternoon. Enjoy your cup today, whatever it may be!
