Turkish Apple

Fruit Herbal Blend by Upton Tea Imports

A caffeine-free fruit tea with real apple pieces and flavoring. The liquor is aromatic, and the taste is both sweet and tart. Try an eight minute infusion and enjoy.

It wasn’t exactly a surprise, because I knew it was coming, but in my poor-me frame of mind, it was nice to come home to my little goodie box of samples I ordered from Upton. (I guess the surprise was how speedily it got here—props to their customer service.)

Big chunks of apple makes this look good and chewy; smells like fresh produce. After a honkin’ old steep time of eight minutes, the color was so light, I was braced to be disappointed. I braced needlessly. It’s delicate—doesn’t hit you in the face—but is pleasantly, mellowly crisp and fruity. Golden Delicious peel instead of Granny Smiths.

Not sure how well this will take to a second steep, but I’m going to give it an overnight shot—I think this would be great cold.

Think this will pass the chill test just fine. I threw the leftovers after my original steep into a pint jar and tucked it in the fridge. Even with recycled apple chunks (yeah, doesn’t THAT sound appetizing?) it was passable. Ought to do nicely with fresh stuff right out of the bag.

I thought about adding a little sugar as I was drinking last night, but I figured that would just make it into apple juice and ruin the lightness and freshness of its tisane personality.

Apple pieces make for a delicious cup of herbal tea. I use this at bedtime, very refreshing. Tart but not too sweet.

I made the first cup in the Zarafina, so I’m not sure how long it brewed for. It was very light and tasted slightly of apples. Okay, but mildly disappointing. I’ll probably try in the triniTEA next time so I can make sure it gets the full recommended 8 minutes to brew.

I’d been hankering for an apple flavored herbal and so I ordered a couple of alternatives. (Thanks Steepsters, for the suggestions.) This was the first to arrive.

The apple bits are chunky and pretty in color, ranging from brownish red, which I take it are the parts of the apple with the skin, to a yellow, almost neutral color, which I take it are the parts of the apple sans skin. They look sort of like chopped walnuts, but more colorful. I chewed on a piece just for laughs, and it’s basically… dried apple. And yummy. Who would have thunk it? ;-)

The aroma prior to steeping is very apply and a little on the tart side. Once infused, it’s a pretty, light golden-yellow color, reminiscent of the skin of golden delicious apples, and slightly dusty-looking. Some browner fruit residue sifts to the bottom of the cup.

I didn’t find the infusion itself to be overly tart. I was steeled for tartness, and pleasantly surprised to find it more neutrally apple-tasting than I expected. If anything, it leans more toward sweet for me though not as sweet as baked apple. I’d describe it as ripe apple sweet. It’s not an incredibly strong flavor, which is part of its charm. It’s very obviously apple, though — you can’t miss it.

The thought crossed my mind that it could even be something kids might be convinced to try, and might even like, as an alternative to the sugar-laden apple juices they tend to favor if it could be made strong enough to withstand icing. The thought of iced tea today is incredibly unappealing given the cold and rain outside. Note to self: try an iced version when the weather turns hot.

But until then, enjoy the apply warmness.

This tea tastes just like you would think: apples. It is almost a baked apple type of flavor but without the typical extra sweetness of a baked apple. It is a really nice before bed tea.

I had a big cup of this tonight as I’m trying to once again cut back on the caffeine before bed. It was okay, but not as good as I remembered. The flavor is quite one-note so I think I have to really be in the mood for this tea. Slight ratings decrease because it just didn’t meet my expectations this time around.

This tea smelled great, before steeping and after the 8 min. steep time, the taste was stronger than the color would infer. Great w/o sweetener and with honey it’s delicious.
