White Peony Reserve (ZW84)

White Tea by Upton Tea Imports

A special grade of China white tea, crafted from fine pluckings and with a generous complement of tender leaf buds. The cup is delicate, with well-balanced flavor and soothing aroma. Highly recommended.

It calls for 2-3 tsp and so for me that was 5 grams for an 8 oz coffee mug. I brewed at 3.5 minutes, 180F. This used up my entire Upton tea sample so if you order don’t expect to get more than one session out of it. Now on to the taste, but first the aroma. It smells ok. I don’t know how to describe it. Kind of musky. That sounds bad, huh? The color is a very light golden. The flavor is sort of bitter with an aftertaste that lingers for a little then disappearing. Overall, I am not a huge fan.

New white tea offering from Upton.

I was surprised to see how many silver buds this tea has, it looks almost like Silver Needle but for occasional White Peony leaves. The flavor is less impressive though. It’s light and mellow but lacks character overall. It’s hard to tell what tea exactly I’m drinking – it has both Silver Needle sweetness and dryness of White Peony. The dryness seems to prevail and pushes sweet notes to the background.

This tea has no personality whatsoever and this is what I call totally forgettable. In order to write this review I have to constantly sip on the tea because I keep forgetting what it tastes like as soon as I swallow it.
