What would happen if you took a blend of high quality small batch shu material and aged Xinhui Mandarin orange peels, then roasted it all in fresh fragrant bamboo? A question that probably only white2tea would ask, but here goes nothing.

Our 2019 ZTMDKZ, which stands for “zhen ta ma de kua zhang” (which I’ll loosely translate as “truly fucking ridiculous”) is a blend made with a traditional technique of bamboo processing and aged chenpi. It is a very complex and medicinal heavy hitter. The soup is thick, the aromas are complicated and enduring, and the experience is wonderful. If you like unique teas, don’t miss this one.

I haven’t had much time to write tea notes recently, I hope to come back to some more focused drinking now. This unique tea is was among the samples I received from Ros, and it is the best chenpi shou mix I’ve had to date.

It has deep and complex aromatics. Already in dry form I get a strong herbaceous and leathery scent. Throughout the session, many other notes emerge, such as those of peanuts, wood smoke, peat, cranberry, and truffles.

The liquor very clear and has a beautiful dark mahogany colour. It is medium bodied, milky, and heavy but not overly thick.

Initial flavours are in the neighbourhood of plant roots and wet earth. Second infusion a little funky with mild bitterness and strong woody notes of tree bark. The aftertaste is a little bit like mildly sour milk. Later, the chenpi comes more to the forefront with medicinal and citrusy flavours. Some of the later steeps also reminded me of coffee.

Man I drank a lot of Chen Pi years back. The wife couldn’t even stand to look at it.

I don’t tend to love bamboo teas but I really love chenpi so I decided to take the risk and order this tea; I’m glad I did – I was blown away by how much I loved it this morning/early afternoon.

It’s rich, pretty smooth and very earthy/mushroom-y but still has a sweetness to it. Strangely, sometimes I feel as though I’m actually getting toasted marshmallow notes from the steeps, especially in the sweetness that lingers in the back of the throat after swallowing. The chenpi/orange notes are lovely too; consistent throughout the sip with forefront sweetness and a pleasant medicinal undertone. This feels very complex to me, and I can tell it’s going to be something I gravitate towards often…
