English Breakfast

Black Tea by Whittard of Chelsea

The most popular House blend. It is rich, strong, fresh tasting, with good color and flavor. It contains Ceylon for flavour, Assam for strength, and Kenya for colour.

I got several bags of this tea from a friend who lives over in England. It was supposed to arrive for X-mas, but Canada Post apparently backlogged all of its incomming deliveries.

The colour, when I add milk, is quite unique – it’s the exact colour of butterscotch, or maybe of creamy peanut butter. Maybe that’s the Kenyan tea they added ‘for colour’?

The tea is quite full-bodied and the tastes makes me think of toast, which seems quite appropriate all things considered. ;)

I’m going old school with my last bag of this. Milk and sugar and drinking it from a nice cup. There’s something to be said for the classic blends like EB.

I posted a bunch of teas in the ‘Take It Away’ thread last night and I’m already getting lots of interest from people. There’s still some teas left so if anyone wants in you’d better hurry. ;D

I added milk and sugar to this tea even though I don’t often like to sweeten my teas. The taste reminds me of when I first started drinking tea as a small child at my grandmother’s house. Happy memories of times long past. :)

So given that yesterday I drank a bunch of not-so-great teas, I decided that today I’d go for some tried-and-true favorites that I know are good.

This tea is quite unassuming and ‘normal’ tasting, but it’s a good, pleasent kind of normal. The tea is practically made to be taken with milk and it goes down smoothly and at the same time it isn’t bland or flavourless.

Mmm, there’s something really warm and cozy and comforting about this tea.

This is a good tea for something easy to pop in the water and hit the road with. You get a lot of caffeine, and a flavor that’s not too bitter like tea bags tend to be. benefits from a little cream and honey.

It has a boldness of flavor which can be nice in the morning but which I tend to avoid.
The liqueur is dark reddish and inky. It will stain your teeth, the glass, and your newly pressed white shirt. It will make your breathe smell like a compost heap. You could say that all teas do this to some extent, which is true, but Whittard’s breakfast blend seems to excel in “most like ink” category.

Took this one to class with me this morning for my finals review sessions. This is another one of those teas that is so simple but a staple tea. One to go to if your indecisive. Loved it black and also loved it with a little honey. Got me through the morning and I love it. Thank you Shelley_Lorraine for this mystery sample. I will definitely keep this one as a morning go to:)

Pretty solid everyday tea for the price. I find it has hints of tobacco in a good way and is worth having this on hand for those who like strong black tea.

Made a pot of this for breakfast with my porridge (oatmeal with raisins, chopped apple, and walnuts, if you wanted to know). I’m still a bit awkward getting my tea ready at the same time as my food even when using my usual bagged tea, but today I guess I felt up to the task of trying loose.

I’m probably not following protocol for tasting, so I won’t get too into specifics, but for all brews I found it a bit harsh yet low on flavor, if that makes any sense. Brewed more lightly it was bland, but drinkable after it cooled a bit. The stronger brew was almost shockingly bitter/astringent – it was improved with soymilk & sugar, but still pretty meh. Tried a second steep, which was much of the same, though a bit milder.

Now about half an hour after finishing, I can still taste a sort of tarry buildup on the back of my throat, as if I’d been smoking. I don’t think I’ll be buying this again.

The bagged version of this is what I’ve taken to drinking at my in-laws’ house. It’s rather old (best before date was 18 months ago), but it’s still better than Twinings Everyday!

Another pot for breakfast! I can see why people like this (it was voted one of Whittard’s top 3 teas by customers) because it’s not bad with milk & sugar. Only 79 more grams to go…

Had another pot today prepared similarly to last time, except I decanted all the liquor into cups rather than leaving the remainder stewing with the leaves. Got some harshness again (though not as bad as yesterday) which was ameliorated by adding sweetener. Drank both steepings black – will try the first with soymilk next time.

Definitely better with soymilk & half a teaspoon of sugar per cup. Better, but still not that great. And I have more than half of the 125g bag to get through – anyone want to help out?

I got this in a pack that also contained the ‘Whittard Original’ blend. I prefer the other one because there is more flavour to it, and I think more assam, which is a sure-fire way of keeping it interesting.

So this is a bit of a disappointment really. Maybe I just set my hopes too high

Nice, strong cup of black tea.Very good with milk, and the Assam gives it a nice jolt without being too overpowering.
