From Yuuki-cha

Baisen is a complex-roast Japanese oolong tea grown organically in very limited amounts in Miyazaki on Kyushu Island, one of the traditional pan-firing tea producing areas of Japan.

This kamairi-style Japanese oolong tea contains a variety of tea breeds from the same small-scale organic tea garden that are very suitable for the production of Japanese oolong tea. By using a few different specific breeds and firing them to three different roast levels gives this oolong tea a rather unique aroma and taste!

What we love about this one is the chocolate-like dry leaf aroma, sweet taste, slight thickness, and subtle fruity notes without astringency. You can enjoy this oolong any time of day. In the morning it is an uplifting beverage and after a meal it is also very enjoyable!

I adore this tea. I love to drink oolong tea in the evenings after a long day at work, and I love this oolong as much as I love Wuyi oolong. It has a great full mouth-feel and a nice earthy, sweet, and slightly floral taste. After the first tasting, I ordered more and stocked up since it’s a limited edition.

Thank you Liquid Proust for this sample!

COLD BREW
Absolutely delicious. I had just enough tea to cold brew this and I’m glad I did. Its smooth and has a light malt flavor. Refreshing on a hot day, but the aftertaste is very satisfying, reminiscent of drinking hot tea.

Flavors: Almond, Brown Sugar, Caramel, Malt, Rice, Sweet

Preparation
Iced 8 min or more

Did this come across more like a faint black than an oolong? I had an interesting experience with it.

Uchinaguchi

A very faint black, like a super light assam. I didn’t really get much aspects of the oolong, but I figured that was more because I cold brewed this one.

Japanese oolong and black teas are… you just have to try them. I have some Japanese black oolong which I forgot to send you ___
I also have Japanese black tea around here too, somewhere.

Oolongs being my favorite tea, I was very curious when I found out there are a few Japanese oolong teas :)
I actually bought the last of Yuuki Cha’s supply of this tea for my group order and it was the only one they even had left.

This is a treat though. I can’t even compare it to other oolongs, it just is its own thing. The aroma was not that strong but the taste was pure. Nice difference in taste between different brews :)

Hey! Just wondering your ratios for steeping this tea.. thanks.

Liquid Proust

I western brew most of my oolongs at 185f for 2 to 3 minutes… some people dislike that method. Haveteawilltravel brewed it at 205f for 15 seconds gonfu I believe https://instagram.com/p/26_gZpTGXH/
It will taste much different than other oolongs that you have drank.

What is your leaf-to-water ratio? I’ve been brewing most Oolongs at 3g/6oz/190F/3min.

Ahhh this was amazing. I grabbed this because it was closest, and I wanted to try Japanese oolong. I had the perfect amount for a gong fu session. The dry leaf consists of small black, green, and slightly yellow curls. This resembles a baozhong but slightly darker. I placed these twirls inside my new warmed kyusu and gave em a shake. I’m going to be honest, the aroma wasn’t the most appeasing. It smelled like roasted wet tobacco. I washed the leaves once hoping to get a better scent, and it moved into wet charcoal. This is a delicate roasted oolong. I brewed it hot first and the brew was rough and bitter. I cooled my water just a bit (200F), and the real flavor rose up. This was an amazing and complex brew. It carried the taste of roast and char, yet it also had sweet and creamy tones of jade rolled oolongs. It was incredibly interesting to be bombarded with dark mineral roasty tones and then softened with a silky vegetal mouthfeel. I was able to pull about seven steeping out my kyusu. The brew grew more and more sweeter after each brew. The final steeping was thin and soft with nectar tones. This gave a strange almost novocain tongue feeling during the first three steepings which was a fascinating experience. I really enjoyed this tea, and I am so grateful to be able to try it!

Sounds fantastic!

I look forward to seeing how different this is to the organic oolong from YUNOMI which was very unique itself.

Haveteawilltravel

This was the one that you included in my box. Are there two different ones?

Liquid Proust in the pink package is the organic oolong and this oolong was in the green stripe bag. I also bought some black oolong for myself which makes the third for me
Haveteawilltravel

ohhhhh interesting, I will be doing some comparing then :)

Liquid Proust

The organic oolong from Japan taste like sencha that was fermented into a black tea. It is quite enjoyable and unique.

I remember reading your review. I’ll have to experience it :)

This is the first ‘good’ or ‘expensive’ oolong I had. I love this tea! At first I tried steeping it like a sencha (multiple short steeps for one cup, using 3-4 g), but didn’t get a balanced taste. I found out that for me this tea comes out best when steeped like a black, using around 3g for a pot of 2-3 average sized cups, however steeping at 80 C.

The leaves have a dry and soft, mildly earthy smell that reminds most of chocolate. After steeping, the tea tastes very nicely balanced and full. All kinds of taste elements are discernable (most of which I can’t name), drawing your attention to every sip, however coming together perfectly into one. It has that typical oolong malty-earthy sweetness, and every sip finishes with a very subtle and pleasant astringency and almost-bitterness. Even the color of this tea is interesting, which is a full brownish yellow with a very subtle green. A second steep of the same leaves was still enjoyable for me, but it did taste thinner and definitely not as good as the first one.
