Back when I was still eating grains, I used to make an awesome breakfast cereal in the crockpot overnight. It was steel cut oats, a mix of water & knudsen’s peach/apple juice (or apple juice), slices up dried apricots, & cardamom pods. In the morning I’d saute some frozen peaches in a skillet, with a little more cardamom, to add to the bowls. It was one of the favorite breakfasts in my house, topped with a little vanilla soymilk (or french vanilla soy creamer), & maybe even some toasted pecans or walnuts.

So the Cardamom in this is really reminding me of that. I really miss breakfasts like that, but I don’t miss my guts hurting. On the other hand, a bowl of warm peaches sprinkled with cardamom & a few toasted nuts is still a nice occasional treat. I like Cardamom. I don’t use it often.

This tea was decent, especially when I added a little stevia to bring out the spice. Thanks to my tea sister Sil for the generous sample!

Yum, I might try that recipe! Never thought of the crockpot as a breakfast maker, great idea:-)

Oh, the crockpot is great for cooking breakfast cereals! I used to set it every night before bed. There was the peach one above. I did a similar one with Diced apples, steel cut oats, apple juice, & cinnamon stick. I also made savory congee in the crock, using short grain brown rice. In the morning I’d stir in spinach or other greens, & make a savory soy sauce with garlic, ginger, etc to drizzle over it. Top with crispy onions, nuts, baked tofu, tempe, or whatever you like. I miss meals like that.

I often do your apple version (use soy milk instead of apple juice) but on the stove, will start a small batch in the crockpot before going to bed tonight!
I understand why you miss this type of comfort food, you stopped ALL grains, even gluten free?

Terri HarpLady

“No” to all grains for me. Initially it was just the ones with gluten, but I’ve come to find that they all make my guts hurt, some worse than others, & they tend to give me acid reflux, which was a total surprise.

I’m so excited to have found this community! I’m a self-employed Harpist (acoustic & electric – Originals, Classical, Rock, Jazz, etc) & Singer/Songwriter. My days & nights revolve around teaching at home, playing gigs, gardening,& fixing awesome food to eat. My schedule is different everyday, but I just go with the flow, & I sip a lot of tea!

My love of Tea began with Herbals back in the 70’s. One of my favorites was a licorice blend from House of Hezekiah, an old tea shop in Kansas City. There was also a tea with mint, rose petals, chamomile, etc called Nuclear Casual Tea.
In the 80’s I gave up caffeine, chocolate, alcohol, (& a few illicit substances…), and brewed medicinal blends & tinctures to support 4 pregnancies (all children born at home). In the 90’s my love affair with green teas began when I discovered ‘The Republic of Tea’. Their beautiful teas & packaging inspired my original song, “TeaMind”, from my CD “Zen Breakfast”. If you’d like to hear the song for free, drop by my website.

In general, I drink my teas straight, but occasionally I add a pinch of Stevia & maybe some coconut or almond milk (I’m allergic to dairy, gluten, & various other things & avoid most sweets.)

I’ve explored a variety of teas:
Whites tend to be a little bland…sorry
Oolongs – wonderfully sensual
Roobios – I’m not a fan in general
Puehr – a fairly new direction for me
I’m not a huge fan of flavored teas, but I do make exceptions, & I’ll try just about anything once.

And Black Tea, Oh how I love thee!!
I am on a quest for the most wonderful breakfast cup! I will find you, my Love!
