53 Tasting Notes

Quangzhou Milk Oolong from DAVIDsTEA
80

This was my first oolong, I believe, so I had no idea what to expect.
I enjoyed it! When the leaves unfurled I was surprised at how large they were. I did not need many to make 16 oz, and I resteeped them a second time with great success.

The flavour was deliciously mossy, with an almost peachy taste. Very smooth.

Creme Brulee from DAVIDsTEA

Such a sweet tea… I enjoy it every now and then for that quality. It smells heavenly but doesn’t quite taste as it smells. The flavor is not as full as the aroma. I am just finishing my tin and I probably will not buy it again. But I enjoyed it while I had it.

Two steeps worked fine, but I wouldn’t go beyond that.

Himalayan Traveller's Tea (organic) from DAVIDsTEA
67

This tea must be steeped briefly, and when made right it is very mild. I steeped a second cup, but it was quite weak. I like it when I’m not looking for something really powerful.

Himalayan Traveller's Tea (organic) from DAVIDsTEA
67

Made the first cup too bitter after steeping too long.

I think I’m going to like it though. I love the large pieces of tea leaves, and it smells very nice.

It’s liquer is very green for a black tea.

Mini Green Pu-Erh Tuocha from Silk Road
67

This is the first pu-erh I have prepared at home. I tried a green pu-erh when I was in the Silk Road Tea shop in Victoria and really enjoyed it, so I picked up a few pucks to try…

As per directions, I brought the water almost to a boil, and then steeped the puck for about 3 minutes. I did, however, steep it in more than two cups of water as suggested.

The liquer is amber and there is only a faint scent (of green tea).
Hmm… I shouldn’t have a had dark chocolate right before… the flavour is very mild, especially while it’s still quite hot.
It’s kinda like a genmaicha without the roasted rice… but not sencha….Extemely subtle taste. There’s something that is almost waxy, but that might be leftover lip gloss. lol.
No complaints here, except it could be stronger. I’ll have to try sticking to 2 cups of water next time to see if that makes a difference

Dragon Pearls from DAVIDsTEA

I had this last weekend at a friend’s home. I have to say I was quite disappointed considering how much I love the Silk Road Dragon Tears. The leaves didn’t appear to be as long and whole as in the Silk Road pearls.

More importantly, though, I didn’t find it very jasmine-y and it was quite bitter. However, I am guessing it was steeped with boiling water, and it was definitely over-steeped. I will refrain from rating it until I try it properly steeped.

Organic Echinacea Elder from Traditional Medicinals

I finished off my Echinacea Plus, and wanted to pick up a new box to help shake this cold/flu. They didn’t have the Plus, but they did have this Echinacea Elder.

It’s very good! It is tastier than the Plus, perhaps sweeter, and less overwhelming. We’ll see if it works!

Dragon Pearls (Long Zhu) from Silk Road Teas
84

(backlogging)

I’ve had this tea a few times since my first try in my hotel room coffee pot. Now, I just throw the pearls (usually 4) in my mug and leave them there. I’ve resteeped up to four times with no loss of flavor, and it never gets bitter, even without removing the leaves.

The leaves are extremely long and narrow. This tea is by far the best Jasmine-scented green I’ve had to date.

Tali's Masala Chai from World Tea House
80

I read a DavidsTEA FB post yesterday about chocolate chai and decided to give this a try. Because I am in the office, I heated up my vanilla rice milk in the microwave with about a tablespoon of Cocoa Camino dark hot chocolate. Then I steeped 1 heaping tsp of Tali’s Masala Chai in just boiled water for about 4 minutes.

YUM! I could have went a little easier on the cocoa, but this is by far my best success with this chai tea.

Vanilla Plantation from Silk Road
77

I’m not a huge black tea drinker, but this one just smelled so good I had to pick up a small tin. It smells so sweet and vanilla-y.
It also tastes very sweet, somewhat of vanilla, but also of something almost like strawberries. Very nice and not bitter or strong like some blacks.

Dragon Pearls (Long Zhu) from Silk Road Teas
84
Gen Mai Cha from Silk Road
81

yum yum yum
Gen Mai Cha is definitely my favorite green so far… well maybe it’s a tie with Jasmine green.

Either way, the Silk Road gen mai cha is as good or better than some I’ve had in Japanese restaurants.
The dry tea is almost equal parts roasted rice and green tea leaves, with a few popped pieces of rice.
The liqueur is quite dark, and the taste is distinctly nutty but still green.

Dragon Pearls (Long Zhu) from Silk Road Teas
84

Steeped 6 pearls in water that was a little too cool. It’s a little tricky, as I’m in a hotel room so my water comes from the coffee pot. (I know, I know). It took about 5 minutes for there to be any evidence of a liqueur.
Jasmine-y, but the tea taste is not completely lost. Like it! Will do a second steep very shortly, as I have just about downed this mug.

Peppermint Pleasure from Just Us
39

Needed a quick tea bag, and this was all I had at home, other than medicinal teas.
This tea is really not minty enough for my tastes. I drank it without really paying much attention to it.

Makaibari Autumnal Darjeeling from World Tea House
75

(Backlogging from yesterday)
A nice standard cup of tea. I know I need to rate this, but I feel so underqualified to rate a darjeeling.

Licorice Spice from Stash Tea Company
36

I grabbed this tea bag on the way out the door this morning, throwing it into my thermos with some just boiled hot water.
An hour later, I could finally sit down and wake up with the cup.

hmmm. This is a strange tea. It definitely smells like licorice, and something else that reminds me of a flea collar. (eep!)

The taste is sweet and somewhat licorice-like. Perhaps there is some cinnamon heat. But otherwise I do not get any of the other flavours.

This is a random teabag in the cupboard and I will not be buying it, but for this one time, I’ll certainly finish the cup!

Bao Zhong Pouchong from World Tea House
86

This is the last of my Bao Zhong. I will miss you, my first oolong!

White Peony from Tea Oh
58

Steeped this cup for probably 5 minutes (I really should use steep.it more often!) as I kinda forgot about it… but I had hoped the longer steeping might help bring out the flavours.

It maybe helped give a little flavour boost, but it gets bordering on bitter when steeped too long. I’ve gotta lower my rating….sorry! :(

Jasmine Flower Green Tea from Tea Oh
88

I’m slightly obsessed with this tea!

Kiwi Berry from Tea Oh
72

I figured out the secret to successful iced tea with this stuff. Use LOTS of “tea”! Wowie, it steeped up really dark red, almost like beet juice, and had much more flavor this go around. How unfortunate that I figured this out at nearly the end of my package.

Makaibari Autumnal Darjeeling from World Tea House
75

I must preface this tasting note by stating I know absolutely nothing about black tea. To me, it all tastes like orange pekoe (other than Earl Grey).

This is a really NICE cup of what I expect black tea to taste like. My taste buds are not refined enough to distinguish what makes a darjeeling different from a Chinese black tea. Anyone care to offer a lesson?

I am on my second steep (4mins, as opposed to 3 for the first). The second cup is less “orange pekoe”-y to me . I think it’s that after-taste thing that reminds me of OP. It’s decently thick, decently strong, and just what I needed to wake up on this cool, way-to-fallish, August morning. Lovely.

Nestea from Nestle

White Peony from Tea Oh
58

I’ve had this tea perhaps three times now but I’ve avoiding logging it in hopes that the next cup would be spectacular. It’s not that it’s bad – far from it! I do enjoy it.
The flavor is subtle, and not bitter in any way.
But it’s not as great as the White Peony I had from World Tea House. The thing that’s missing is that soft, silky mouthfeel. It’s just a little too watery. Next time I will double the amount of leaves! Or maybe it’s the plastic office kettle? I should try making this at home, but for now, I have to say I’m somewhat unsatisfied.

Jasmine Flower Green Tea from Tea Oh
88

(back-logging)

Had a cup this morning. Perfectly devine, until the last third of my cup. It was my own fault, though. I couldn’t find my tea balls so I just threw some leaves in the cup. After a half hour steeping, the last of the cup was a bit too bitter. But the first half – heaven!

Profile

Bio

I’ve been drinking tea off and on for a few years, but only in the last year have I started to test out loose leafs, and expand my taste buds.

I consider myself very new to the world of teas, especially when it comes to properly steeping, and knowing much about what certain teas are supposed to be like.

After discovering there was more to tea than Red Rose OP, I have traditionally tended to drink mint teas and similar herbals (but no fruity ones), red rooibos, honeybush, and the occasional matte. I’ve only recently discovered white teas and oolongs, which I really enjoy.

I’m expanding my knowledge, trying new teas, and just starting to learn about temperature/steep times, etc.

0: I don’t even want to taste it.
1-10: I can’t finish the cup.
11-30: I’ll finish my cup, but that’s it.
31-50: I will drink it until I’ve used it all up, or find someone to give it to. It’s ok, but it’s not something I tend to reach for.
51-70: I enjoy it enough to reach for it specifically, but I won’t get it again.
71-80: I enjoy it quite a bit. I would recommend it to others.
81-90: I would definitely buy again, but it’s not my favorite.
91-100: The creme de la creme
