411 Tasting Notes

Vanilla Jasmine from Golden Moon Tea
71

This tea is confusing, and complex. When I first opened the packet I did a double take – bubble gum! But I was opening tea, not gum…? On a second sniff I could identify the vanilla and in the background found a subtle hidden jasmine note. But overall – bubble gum.

My first sip tasted odd… the flavors were complex and hard to pin down. My tongue was confused. I got some creaminess from the vanilla, but couldn’t really taste the jasmine. But I did get a cooling aftertaste in my mouth after the liquid had passed which I think may have been the jasmine. There was a fleeting overtone of “artificiality” in the brew. When I added a little sweetener, I tasted some of the “cream soda” flavor other tasters have reported. But it wasn’t a strong resemblance.

I then tried it cooled, and enjoyed it much more. The melded vanilla and jasmine each stand out as separate yet complimentary flavors.

As an iced tea, this was wonderful. I can very much see myself sitting outside on a warm night, drinking this tea, and being very content. As a warm tea, it wasn’t my favorite, however I know of many others who appreciate it very much. This is one of those teas you’ll have to try for yourself. But, if you do – make sure to try it iced.

Milk Oolong from thepuriTea

NOM!

This is a wonderful milk oolong. Smooth, creamy, lovely mouthfeel, mellow flavor. Beautiful yellow colored liquor, amazing expando-leaf that grows to 3 times it’s size. This may be my favorite milk oolong so far. I think I need more of this!

Jasmine Pearl from thepuriTea

The tea seems less masculine today, more delicate. Yum.

Mi Lan Dan Cong from Canton Tea Co

Wow! WOW!

I try not to read the descriptions before I take my first sip, because I usually can never taste the flavors they say I should be able to taste. But this? Lychee all the way. This is amazing. Love it. I can’t wait to play with it some more.

Jasmine Pearl from thepuriTea

A more astringent and jasmine-y tea than other jasmine pearl teas I’ve had. The word that keeps coming to mind is “harsher” but that conveys negativity. It’s not as smooth nor as delicate as others, but it’s not a bad thing.

Maybe I should say it’s a more masculine jasmine pearl. It’s good. Almost powerful. Yummy.

Dong Ding from thepuriTea
80

Wow. This tea has awesome mouthfeel. Very creamy with a little astringency on the back end. I think I didn’t use enough leaf, because the flavors are very delicate. What I can get is lemony and floral. Slightly nutty.

I’m enjoying this very much. I think I may need some more of this after I finish off this sample. And I definitely need to play with the leaf amounts.

Chai Green from Stash Tea Company
53

The spicing is nice, but the tea part of this is pretty wimpy. Meh.

Dragon Well (formerly known as Gracious Green) from Zhena's Gypsy Tea
63

Not a bad green. It didn’t stand out as awesome or awful, but it was a decent cup. I had this bagged, and I wish that it had better steeping instructions on the packet.

English Caramel from Teapouro
38

Found this place downtown, and picked up some of this tea because it smelled nummy. Brewed it up in my zarafina.

Boring. the caramel isn’t very strong (I LOVE caramel, and wanted more) and even though I added extra leaf and choose “strong” on my zarafina it was weak. Meh.

Red Dragon Pearl from thepuriTea

Got a new shipment of tea last night from the puriTea. Wow – that was a lot for not very much money.

This tea is neat and yummy. I need to play with it a little more to learn more about it, so I’m going to hold off on rating right now, but get dark cocoa from it and wow… very yummy.

Only problem I’ve found so far – the label direction say 5-7 minutes while the on-line say 3-5. That could cause issues.

1999 Vietnamese Cooked Loose Puerh from Canton Tea Co

Earlier this week I mentioned that this tea might even get my husband who doesn’t like puerhs to like it.

Today, he tried it. And he pretty much liked it. Cool. :)

Four Seasons from Samovar
79

Been drinking a lot of this lately. Had a batch yesterday I got 5 steeps out of. This tea’s good for warm weather.. and Kansas City’s been REALLY HOT lately. Slightly bumping this – I’ve been liking it a little more.

My puerh experiences are getting better and better. First I’ve found green puerhs, which I think I’ll need to explore more, and now this one.

This puerh takes that dirt or fishtank flavor that you find in other puerhs and transforms it into something mellow, smooth, and really tasty. If I had this puerh without every trying other puerhs, that description wouldn’t make sence. I might come up with rich and slightly earthy, but not dirt

I like this a lot. I might even be able to get the hubby (who has not liked a puerh, ever) to like this.

If Canton ever has another free shipping sale, I think I might buy this. (Note, if you’re reading this O! People from Canton Tea Co, please wait a while! I need to clear some cupboard space. :)

Rooibos Lemon Chiffon from SpecialTeas
89

Had this last night to test my new Perfect Steeper by Eight Cranes to see how well the filter worked with the tiny rooibos pieces. And it reminded me why I love this tea. Lemony and creamy and just darned good.

And the Eight Crane’s Perfect Steeper worked REALLY well on the Rooibos.

I am having problems getting this tea to be much other than astringent and little bitter. I’m playing with the parameters, but since I’ve only got a sample I won’t get much experimental room. I do get hints of floral and citrus.

Plum Harvest from Teavana

Bumping the score because I finally had this iced with enough leaf and a little sweetener. NOM. It’s lovely.

Orange Blossom White Tea from Shang Tea
75

Wow. I tried their Tangerine Blossom red tea earlier today and loved it. So I thought I’d try this Orange Blossom White this afternoon.

Not a fan. The leaf is goregous, but very sour and very bitter. I actually dumped out the first cup. And I’m barely making it through the second (I thougth a second steeping might be less… intense). The sweet orange of the last tea has been replaced by something I’d rather clean counters with. BLEA.

Tangerine Blossom from Shang Tea
84

Wow. I’m loving this tea!

It’s very aromatic, and very flavorful. Have you ever tried orange flower water in anything? Did you like it? If so, you’ll LOVE this. Since it uses tangerine blossoms rather than orange blossoms, it’s a slightly sweeter taste, but it’s got that flavor from the blossoms that doesn’t delve into sour or bitter like using orange peel in tea can. When used too much, orange flower water can move towards perfumy, but while this tea does have an aromatic quality (and leaves the ghosts of tangerine blossoms in your mouth) it’s not too heavy; nor does it taste like you’re chugging your grandmother’s perfume.

It’s also got an aroma and aftertaste of boiling sugar. Not that the brew is particularly sweet, but there’s an aroma when you’re making candy and this also has it. Warm and sweet, (and possibly sugar cane-y, but I haven’t gotten the opportunity to sniff many sugar canes, so I may be wrong on that…)

My delight in this tea is also surprising as it’s fairly delicate. I’m a bold flavor girl, and this is not bold, but oy! It’s yummy. If it can hold up to multiple steeps, I’ll be in heaven.

Jasmine Green from Andrews & Dunham Damn Fine Tea
72

Some of this on a warm summer afternoon? Lovely.

Rice Pollen Green Puerh Cake from Pure Puer Tea / Bon Teavant
76

Puerhs are still something I’m learning to like. I’ve had some that were awesome, and some that I absolutely HATED.

Trying this one, I think I’m going to have to explore the green puerhs more – it had an amazing depth of character without that occasionally overpowering leathery or earthy taste. It was flavorful while being mellow, and tasty without overpowering.

This tea could also do more steeps than I could drink.

Good stuff.

Chrysanthemum White Tea from Shang Tea
76

I’m having quite the day (in one of those eye-rolling icky ways) today, so I picked this out because of it’s proposed “worry reducing” properties. It’s a very interesting flavor – the chrysanthemum is almost bitter but not unpleasant at all. It does cover most of the white tea flavor, but you can taste hints of it around the edges.

However, whether it’s psychosomatic or because the day has gotten less crappy, I am a little less stressed. So interesting flavor + less stress = me drinking this tea more.

Vanilla Bean from Tea Market
75

This smelled awesome at the shop the other weekend, so we picked up 2 oz. I brewed up a pot this morning, and as I sipped, I thought… meh. I didn’t like it unless I sweetened it and even then not much. It wasn’t highly flavored enough for me.

I only finished half the pot, and as I was running out the door to go vote, I literally stuck the rest of the pot in the fridge for when I got home.

Now, as an iced tea – it’s pretty darned good. It’s almost better without sweetener iced, and has a lot more character.

Golden Needle King from Shang Tea
88

Oh wow. This is lovely. I bought this packet from their shop in downtown KC, and it’s labeled there as Golden Needle Red Tea, rather than Golden Needle King, but per their site it looks like the same thing.

This, ladies and gentlemen, might be a good replacement for Dawn from the Simple Leaf. Opening the packet I got a giant whiff of cocoa. Yum! It’s a lighter colored tea, since it’s a red tea, but it’s VERY flavorful. It’s got tones of cocoa and pepper and something that makes me think of autum leaves, but in a really good way.

I did this at approx. 190 for 2 minutes. It was made of awesome.

Profile

Bio

I’ve got a lot of interests: sushi, science fiction/fantasy, medieval recreation, cooking (specifically medieval cooking), reading, British science fiction (Doctor Who!), hand sewing and now TEA!!

My favorites tend to be oolongs and flavored black teas. I like highly flavored teas more than delicate ones. Rooibos tends to taste like dirt to me, and hibiscus is very sour to my palate. But I’m always up to try all sorts of things, and will often find things that I really like which I thought I’d hate.
