This is a tea I always end up brewing western style. The puerh in it is probably just a little above average, good but not fantastic. The chocolate in it is great. It could be described as chocolaty goodness with puerh. It is a tea I brew for nights when I don’t have the time to gongfu a tea and just want to steep one pot.

I brewed 12g of leaf in an 18 oz teapot with boiling water for thirty seconds. It came out chocolaty, chocolaty, chocolaty.

drank Black Pearls by Clipper Ship Tea Co.

This is a very tasty tea from my local tea shop, Clipper Ship Tea Company. I have decided to review it here in case anyone is local on Long Island or even an NYC resident who might choose to take a trip. They do not have a website, they do take phone orders.

Back to this tea. This is a pearl tea, large pearl shaped nuggets of Yunnan black tea. It is very malty and slightly astringent. A hint of natural sweetness pokes through too. There is some bitterness as well. This tea defines complex. It has malt flavors, it has astringent flavors, it has sweet flavors, it has bitter flavors. It is excellent with sugar, how I am drinking it now, and takes honey well from what I remember. You could add milk to this one but I never add milk to tea.

If anyone who reads this is local to Long Island, or potentially even Queens, they should take a ride and check out this store. It is about the only real tea store on Long Island save Teavana and I think one other. They have a great selection of teas and teaware. They even had a couple of gaiwans the last time I was there. They are located in Northport village so they are well located for anyone in eastern Nassau County or Western Suffolk County.

AllanK

You can also find them on Facebook and Yelp. The owner has a reputation for being a little odd but it is a nice shop with excellent tea. They are cheaper than Teavana.

Thank you for the info
I might check it out when we visit my sis. She is in Merrick. I hope it’s not too far;)

AllanK

It is between a 30 and 45 minute drive from Merrick, depending on the traffic. They have a facebook page where you can look up the address. I am going there tomorrow in all possibility and may buy a gaiwan depending on what they have. If I get anything I will post pics on instagram.

Allan: Have you ever been to Fang Gourmet?

AllanK

I have been to Fang Gourmet Tea. They are a great little store. They do sampling as a gongfu tea service.

AllanK

I have been to Fang Gourmet Tea and plan to go again sometime this winter. That was the first time I had ever had a true Gongfu Tea service. They are an incredible store although their tea is pricy and their teaware mostly out of my price range.

I am avoiding caffeine tonight so rooibos it is. This is a good savory rooibos in character. It has a little sweetness but not too much. A good tea to drink when you don’t want to be kept awake by too much caffeine.

Chose this one this morning. I keep one broken up in a Yixing container bought from EBay. I am drinking the second steeping. The first steeping went into a thermos for work. Brewed it for 30 sec in an 18 oz teapot with boiling water with 10g leaf. It is a little earthy but not too earthy. There is still some fermentation flavor. Overall it is a good, tasty ripe puerh. There are some complex notes I can’t figure out exactly how to describe. It is sweet, it is a little earthy. But not earthy in a bad sort of way if you know what I mean.

This is beyond a doubt one of the best puerhs I have ever drank. Part of me is angry at Verdant for putting this on sale today. It was on sale for only one hour and I didn’t happen to check my email during that time. Part of me is happy they made the sale so unfair, because I don’t need more tea anyway. Now I won’t rush out to buy more. I do wish I had bought more than an ounce. I will eventually have to buy more. Maybe they will read this and decide a one hour sale is very unfair. One day maybe, but one hour?

That being said I steeped this eight times. First for 10 sec, then 10 sec, 15 sec, 15 sec, 30 sec, 30 sec, 1 min, 2 min. I used 5g of leaf in a 140 ml Yixing teapot. It was basically smooth from the start and the fresh leaves had an incredible fruit like aroma. There were some bitter moments too but it was mostly sweet tasting and smooth. I didn’t notice any of the chocolate or dates notes often found in good ripe puerh. I think you need an aged raw puerh for that but this was good. I wish I had bought more than an ounce, but it is expensive.

This is an excellent ripe puerh that I certainly hope gets better with age. After all I bought a tong of it about a year ago. It has developed a bit of a dates note to it. I don’t notice much in the way of chocolate notes but there seems to be a little behind the tongue. This tea is an overall winner of a blend.

I steeped this once for my morning tea in a 18 oz teapot with 10g leaf for 30 sec. No time for a gongfu session before work, I wish there was time. I may resteep this tea later.

This is a tasty and complex tea. It was also hard to get right. I brewed it in a 220 ml gaiwan with 7g leaf. First I tried boiling water and 20 sec. It was way too weak and way to bitter. I lowered the water temperature to 190 degrees and gave it 3 min. I then steeped it again for 4 min and 7 min. This yielded a very tasty tea, still with a slight bitter taste, I think from the rice. The chocolate notes were much more subtle than I expected. I would have liked stronger chocolate notes. Overall it was very good. I went out and bought this tea because of the reviews of a couple other people on Steepster.

drank Grape Wulong Oolong Tea by Teavana

Picked this one out today almost my chance. It is not great, not terrible and a little too sweet. I think it would make an excellent iced tea as it has very little bitterness and astringency. I would only cautiously recommend someone try this tea. Some people will like it, more probably will not.

This tea is really good in the first steeping, a little too bitter in the second steeping and good after that. It is a tea I like. I did not want to try something new tonight as I knew I could not give it my full attention. It is too late and I don’t want the caffeine tonight. Tonight I steeped this only twice, in a 350ml teapot. First for 15 sec then for 10 sec. I used 12 g of leaf and boiling water. In the first steep I noticed some interesting notes, I would describe chocolate for one and there were others but I was too tired to pay attention. There is a definite bitterness in the second steep, I think I should have given it only 5 seconds. I know from drinking this tea that that bitterness soon disappears. But overall it is a strong tea not for the weak of heart.

This review may be a little sketchy, because I drank it this morning before being called in to work. It is an enjoyable, slightly bitter tea that tastes much like an Oolong rather than a pure black tea. It has a little of that characteristic oolong bitterness along with some black tea sweetness. In fact, if you just saw this tea and didn’t know what it was you would definitely think it a heavily roasted oolong. However, it is fully oxidized. It is available from Tea Trekker and I think they do a good job of sourcing their teas. It is good enough so that I might buy it again but am unsure, so many teas to try after all. I steeped this twice in a 18 oz teapot, planning to steep it just once. The second steep I put into a thermos and took to work. First for two minutes then for three. I used 2.5 tsp leaf and boiling water. It is called frozen summit because it is so high mountain that you can get frost in the warmer months even the summer I think.

Tea Trekker is an interesting site, lots of good quality tea. www.teatrekker.com

I am Allan. I live and work in Long Island, New York. I have been amassing a tea collection for nearly two years and have spent way too much money. I now try to buy mostly Puerh as I like it most and it lasts nearly forever. Black tea has a habit of going bad. If anyone is interested in tea swaps I am open to ideas and have quite a cupboard.
