Wicked Teas!

I’m not sure whether this was reformulated or not, it used to have red sanding sugar that they removed, but flavor-wise I think it’s the same. The packaging just says “Candy Apple” this year, but I think that’s more because the full name probably didn’t fit well on the tin design. In any case, it is different from their normal Candy Apple black tea, as it has extra caramel and vanilla flavoring.

Honestly, I’m finding it a little bit bland. I expected a stronger apple flavor, since I remember their Candy Apple being more apple-y. It’s very mild. What’s there is a crisp red apple, and then there’s some caramel as well. Not noticing the vanilla at all, maybe it’s melding in with the caramel.

Not bad, but the flavoring is too mild IMO. Also, I’m always confused why they would name a tea “Candy Apple” and then make it a caramel apple tea. Those are two different things! To me, candy apple implies a sweet, apple-forward flavor with some tang, and no caramel…

I always associate candy apples to be the apples on a stick dipped in caramel. Is there more than one type of candy apple?

Cameron B.

To me, that’s a caramel apple. Candy apples are coated in a hard candy shell, usually red.

Around here there is a clear distinction between candy apples, which are in a hard coated sugar shell, and caramel apples, which are dipped in caramel.

Cameron B.

I wonder if it’s a regional thing? I’ve also seen chocolate covered, which sounds awful to me ha ha… XD

I have had chocolate covered and they are astoundingly delicious! A local deli used to sell them in many flavors. Caramel turtles were my favorite. Gigantic apples dipped in caramel, then chocolate, rolled in chopped pecans and drizzled with more chocolate. There were so many flavors to choose from. It broke our hearts when they closed during lockdown!

Cameron B.

I guess if it’s caramel and chocolate, maybe that makes a bit more sense at least. It still doesn’t appeal to me, but maybe I’ll give it a try sometime!

I’m not how far the Kilwin’s candy shop chain extends, but their chocolate covered apples are superb. There’s one in the Branson, MO tourist shopping district.

Gmathis – haven’t heard of them around here but I am looking out for anyone selling those apples again.

gmathis

Looks like they’ve got two or three NC stores, but I’m not sure how far they are from you.

Exciting! Two locations near Superanna!

Hi, I’m Cameron!

I’m a 30-something software engineer currently living in Austin, Texas with my husband and our two pugs. I tend to cycle between my different hobbies, and they include piano, knitting, video games, board games, miniature painting, planners, bento, Korean skincare, wax melts, and – of course – TEA! But really, what I’m best at is “collecting” hobby-related things… ;)

I prefer my tea lukewarm or at room temperature and without milk or sugar. I steep Western style, and fluctuate between using big mugs or small teapots depending on the season.

I am always up for a swap! Just let me know if you’d like to try something in my cupboard.

Tea Preferences:
I enjoy both flavored and unflavored teas in many forms. These days, I drink mostly flavored teas, and I tend to gravitate most toward black, green, oolong, and herbal varieties. I do have a special fondness for straight Japanese green teas, however.

I do not sweeten my teas, and pre-sweetened teas are usually too sweet for me. I also do not enjoy stevia (or monkfruit, etc.).

I tend to reach for fruitier flavors rather than desserty ones these days, but I do have favorites from both categories. Willing to try anything once! There are a few ingredients/flavors that aren’t generally my jam, such as coconut, rose, lavender, and chocolate flavoring. But I also have teas that I love with some of those things, too! :)

Favorite Companies:
3 Leaf
Bird & Blend
Dammann Frères
Harney & Sons
Kyoto Obubu Tea Farms
Lupicia
Old Barrel Tea Co
Simpson & Vail
Taiwan Tea Crafts
TeaVivre

Tea Rating Scale:
90-100: Outstanding! Permanent cupboard resident
80-89: Great – a possible staple
70-79: Good, but I wouldn’t buy it
60-69: It’s decent
50-59: Meh… I may or may not have finished the cup
40-49: Ick. Couldn’t finish it.
00-39: Repulsive, I spat it out

I will sometimes refrain from rating a tea if I feel I’m too biased due to my personal dislikes, or if I suspect the sample has been compromised by age or scent contamination.
