Bird & Blend Matcha Advent Calendar 2023 – Day 3

Another delicious iced oat latte! :)

The lemon here reminds me of lemon drops, and the somewhat candylike flavor is fun as a latte. Nice balance of flavoring with the matcha itself, and I do feel like the lemon does a nice job of toning down the seaweediness just a bit. There is a touch more bitterness than usual, probably from the inclusion of the lemon peel. But still somewhat minimal.

Really enjoying this advent so far! Would enjoy it even more if opening these little tins wasn’t guaranteed to make a mess on my countertop… XD

Flavors: Bitter, Candy, Citrus, Grassy, Lemon, Lemon Zest, Sweet, Umami

Preparation
Iced 1 tsp 8 OZ / 236 ML

This does sound tasty!

Can’t go wrong with lemon! :)

DIY Kyoto Obubu Advent Calendar – Day 2

Ahhh…

So glad I saved this for last, since those last two weren’t super successful. It’s nice to have a sure thing to enjoy at the end of the day! This is a wonderful kuki-hojicha, toasty and cozy and all the good things. And today I’m actually getting a distinct black sugar note! Along with lovely autumn leaves and toasted grains.

Just… yes. :)

Flavors: Autumn Leaf Pile, Brown Sugar, Dry Leaves, Grain, Mineral, Molasses, Roasted, Round, Smooth, Sweet, Toasty, Woody

Preparation
190 °F / 87 °C 2 min, 0 sec 3 tsp 16 OZ / 473 ML

Thésaurus Tea Fandom Advent Calendar 2023 – Day 2

Another butterfly pea flower blend? :|

This one is decent enough, but nothing special IMO. The problem is, it has chamomile, which overpowers every other flavor here. I can taste a little bit of the apple and pineapple, but it’s quite subtle compared to the pollen-y notes of the chamomile. Green tea? Can’t taste it at all. Maybe a bit of cucumber from something?

I do like chamomile, so it’s still enjoyable, I just wish the ingredients had been better balanced here. Needs moar pineapple! :P

Flavors: Apple, Chamomile, Cucumber, Hay, Honey, Pineapple, Pollen, Smooth, Sweet, Tart

Preparation
175 °F / 79 °C 2 min, 0 sec 1 tsp 8 OZ / 236 ML

hehe this note made me laugh

Sipology Advent Calendar 2023 – Day 2

I was excited to see this in the advent. Then I saw it was a green tea, which lessened my excitement just a little. Then I smelled it and was no longer excited. XD

This actually reminds me quite a lot of DT’s Elf Help. It has that same weird powdery and tart candy sort of flavor that makes me think of Smarties. Maybe a bit of bubblegum in there as well. There’s nothing Earl Grey about it in my opinion either, it does have a citrus note but it very much reminds me of a lemon or orange cleaning product. It has that sharp essential oil sort of vibe to it, if that makes sense. Also, the flavoring is just too strong in general.

Nope, not for me! :P

Flavors: Artificial, Bubblegum, Candy, Chalk, Chemical, Citrus Zest, Fruity, Lemon Zest, Orange Zest, Powdery, Sweet

Preparation
175 °F / 79 °C 2 min, 0 sec 3 tsp 16 OZ / 473 ML

Tea at the White House Advent Calendar 2023 – Day 2

This one was a bit odd. The base is aggressively earthy, which doesn’t meld very well with the desserty flavors. Also, I almost felt like I was tasting bergamot at one point? Not sure if that’s just a connotation I have because of the earthier base or what.

Anyway, it wasn’t awful – I drank it – just a weird choice of base for a cake tea.

Flavors: Butter, Cake, Dirt, Earthy, Mineral, Smooth, Vanilla

Preparation
200 °F / 93 °C 3 min, 0 sec 8 OZ / 236 ML
Michelle

What’s weird about a dirt cake, I used to make mud pies as a kid? lol

Cameron B.

Oooh, now you’ve gone and made me want one of those “dirt cups” with the chocolate cake/cookies and pudding and gummy worms LOL!

gmathis

We come up with themed excuses to serve those at VBS every year, with or without the worms! Last time, they were mini archaeological digs.

Beach House Teas 12 Teas of Christmas 2023 – Day 2

This one is hitting the spot this afternoon. It’s an orange spice black tea, but it’s quite light on the spice, and even moreso on the orange. So it ends up being a smooth, earthy black tea with a kiss of cinnamon and the faintest hint of orange. I’m not saying it’s anything amazing, but I’m really enjoying my mugful as I watch Jann’s vlogmas from yesterday. Right tea at the right time I guess!

I will say, I find it hilarious how many times they stress its uniqueness in the description, lmao. Like guys, this is literally one of the most common flavor combinations for a holiday tea… XP

Flavors: Cinnamon, Earthy, Hay, Mineral, Musty, Orange Zest, Round, Smooth, Sweet

Preparation
200 °F / 93 °C 3 min, 0 sec 3 tsp 16 OZ / 473 ML

Compagnie & Co Advent Calendar 2023 – Day 2

I considered picking up some of this tea when I ordered my advent, but decided to avoid buying teas that were also in the advent. It’s a hazelnut and vanilla black tea.

I will say, I think I’m glad I didn’t spring for 100g. It’s a tasty enough tea, it just lacks oomph. Plus I don’t really pick up on much of the vanilla, mostly it’s a mellow hazelnut black tea. The tea itself has woody notes which I think goes very well with the hazelnut flavor. Still, would’ve liked to taste some of the vanilla or even some cream.

Flavors: Butter, Hazelnut, Nutty, Smooth, Sweet, Toasty, Woody

Preparation
200 °F / 93 °C 3 min, 0 sec 8 OZ / 236 ML

Bird & Blend Matcha Advent Calendar 2023 – Day 2

A late start today! I spent all morning making a reel for Instagram, don’t ask me why I decided that was necessary LOL.

Made this as an iced oat latte, and it’s scrumptious. Very ginger snap in flavor, but the milk lightens it up and takes some of the bite out of it. It almost reminds me of a cinnamon graham cracker, but with ginger as well. I do get a tiny hint of the chili, but it tastes more like black pepper to me. I still don’t love the matcha base? It’s serviceable though, and at least it’s not bitter.

Perfect pick-me-up to power me through the rest of the day!

Beach House Teas 12 Teas of Christmas 2023 – Day 1

This “advent” is more of a sampler pack, so there is no set order for the teas. I chose one at random!

This is… fine. It’s a somewhat generic and very muddled herbal tisane. And I’m not surprised, looking at the very extensive list of ingredients. Mostly, I’m getting chamomile, mint, and a whole lotta mustiness, perhaps from the berry leaves? I thought I was tasting licorice root, but it must be a combination of the star anise and the stevia. It’s very mild either way, not enough to bother me.

It’s still a fine tisane to have before bed, just nothing special and too many ingredients causing a lack of clarity of flavor. But I made it through Day 1, phew! Tomorrow we start all over again! :P

Flavors: Chamomile, Herbaceous, Herbs, Honey, Licorice, Licorice Root, Mint, Musty, Peppermint, Pollen, Sweet

Preparation
200 °F / 93 °C 3 min, 0 sec 3 tsp 16 OZ / 473 ML

Compagnie & Co Advent Calendar 2023 – Day 1

Well this is an interesting one. A green tea with citrus, sage, and… banana? What an unusual combo.

Well I’m definitely not getting banana, but I’m really liking the rest. The citrus part reminds me of grapefruit, and it makes for quite a nice pairing with the savory and herbaceous sage. The green base is somewhat grassy but fairly smooth, and I do think it’s the right choice for this flavor combo. There is a touch of astringency in the finish, but if anything it only makes the grapefruit more authentic-tasting.

Very refreshing and enjoyable! This tea makes me want to try and grapefruit and sage gin cocktail… :P

Flavors: Astringent, Bitter, Citrus, Citrus Zest, Dry Grass, Grapefruit, Grassy, Herbaceous, Herbs, Sage, Savory, Tangy

175 °F / 79 °C 2 min, 0 sec 8 OZ / 236 ML

Bio

Hi, I’m Cameron! I’m a 30-something software engineer currently living in Austin, Texas with my husband and our two pugs, Gobo and Ume. I tend to cycle between my different hobbies, and they include piano, knitting, video games, board games, miniature painting, planners, bento, KBeauty, and – of course – TEA! But really, what I’m best at is “collecting” hobby-related things… ;)

I prefer my tea lukewarm or at room temperature and without milk or sugar. I steep Western style, and fluctuate between using big mugs or small teapots depending on the season. Occasionally I’ll brew Gongfu style when I’m in the mood. I’ll also often use a kyusu for Japanese teas.

I am always up for a swap! Just let me know if you’d like to try something in my cupboard.

Tea Preferences:
I enjoy both flavored and unflavored teas in many forms. These days, I drink mostly flavored teas, and I tend to gravitate most toward black, green, oolong, and herbal varieties. I do have a special fondness for straight Japanese green teas, however. I also enjoy maté, rooibos, and honeybush. I love matcha and drink it often! Fruit tisanes are not a favorite, but I’m always willing to try them.

I do not sweeten my teas, and pre-sweetened teas are usually too sweet for me. I also do not enjoy stevia.

Fruit: All of them! My ‘go-to’s tend to be in the red fruits, stonefruit, or citrus spectra. I also really love apple, banana, berry, fig, lychee, melon, pear, and rhubarb flavors. Tropical fruits aren’t among my favorites, but I still enjoy them once in a while – especially passionfruit, mango, and pineapple. I am not generally a fan of coconut in tea, though there are some exceptions.

Dessert: I love creamy vanilla and marshmallow flavors, along with anything in the caramel family such as butterscotch, toffee, or maple. Chocolate is also a favorite, though I’m often disappointed by it in tea. And don’t forget anything buttery, cakey, or cookie-y!

Floral: I’m a little bit more particular in this category. I very much enjoy jasmine, even strong jasmine, along with sakura, chamomile, and elderflower. Osmanthus is also a favorite of mine. But I’m not crazy about rose or lavender flavors, and I prefer hibiscus in moderation only.

Spices: I don’t generally find myself drawn to masala chai, but I do enjoy spices combined with other flavors. My favorite spices are the warm ones, especially cinnamon, nutmeg, anise, and cardamom. A bit of heat from black pepper or chili is okay too, as long as it’s not overwhelming! Ginger can be a lovely accent, but I find it difficult to drink as a starring flavor.

Aromatics: I’m obsessed with Earl Grey! I also love cooling flavors such as mint (especially spearmint), pine, juniper, and eucalyptus. I am not a fan of strong rosemary or sage in tea.

Favorite Companies:
3 Leaf
Bird & Blend
Dammann Frères
Harney & Sons
Kyoto Obubu Tea Farms
Lupicia
Old Barrel Tea Co
Simpson & Vail
Taiwan Tea Crafts
TeaVivre

Tea Rating Scale:
90-100: Outstanding! Permanent cupboard resident
80-89: Great – a possible staple
70-79: Good, but I wouldn’t buy it
60-69: It’s decent
50-59: Meh… I may or may not have finished the cup
40-49: Ick. Couldn’t finish it.
00-39: Repulsive, I spat it out

I will sometimes refrain from rating a tea if I feel I’m too biased due to my personal dislikes, or if I suspect the sample has been compromised by age or scent contamination.
