This is from the “sipdown-in-progress” box. To be honest, I was hesitant to try this one, as I find myself not enjoying smoky teas as much lately as I used to…

But I actually really like the smoke here, it pairs so nicely with the bergamot. The overall taste is a bit light, I think this would be ideal for afternoon tea. The bergamot is not overpowering, and has a nice citrusy zing. The smoke is fairly light as well, a nice savory smoked food sort of note. I’ve never had a longan fruit, but to me the fruit here tastes quite a bit like lychee, with that unique juicy sort of floral tropical flavor. It seems an odd pairing with the other two flavors but goes over well, happily I am a fan of lychee in general.

Raising the rating a bit here because I like this one more than I remember. Happily, I see that the US website still offers it, in the case that I find I need it in my cupboard later on.

In other news, I seem to be amassing quite a stockpile of freeze-dried miso soup. I fell in love with it a few months ago after I think discovering it through Kickstarter? So now I’ve ordered some alternate brands through Amazon and am in miso heaven. The freeze-dried variety is so much better than the instant kind I’ve had in the past, with actual big chonks of veggies and such. And the flavor variety is amazing! Today I had an eggplant version that was delish… (drool)

Haha the soup collection — love that!

Cameron B.

I’m a soup lover, I’ll have to start breaking out the Instant Pot & dutch oven recipes soon… ❤

Courtney

The winter is perfect for soups! We actually picked up some vegan gruyère to make French onion soup in the Instant Pot today!

gmathis

Thank you for helping me decide what’s for supper tonight!

Cameron B.

Yasss French onion! I’m thinking something with beans and greens this weekend…

ashmanra

We practically live on soup. I am loving chickpea lemon orzo right now. Where do you get freeze dried miso?

ashmanra

Thank you! I like the variety pack. I had looked at some others but they were ten of the same thing.

Courtney

Chickpea lemon orzo sounds amazing! I’ll be looking up that recipe stat!

AJRimmer

Oh yeah we have 20 pounds of green chile in the freezer, ready for green chile stew all winter long (:

Another one from Sips By. Clearly they really wanted me to try some Indian black teas… XD

I actually steeped this one twice, the first time with a conservative time of 2.5 minutes. It came out quite bland, so I steeped a second cup for 4 minutes. I tend to err on the side of shorter steeps with Indian black teas, but maybe that’s not necessary for Nilgiri?

Anyway, it’s still rather lightly flavored. There is zero bitterness or astringency, which is rather shocking to me. Mostly there are soft notes of hay, malt, a bit of wood and earth near the end of the sip. Perhaps some tobacco and leather in there as well, and a hint of dark raisin. It reminds me a bit of a cross between Assam and a Chinese black tea?

Nothing spectacular, but very drinkable.

3986 tasting notes

After being disappointed by the last tea, and still feeling like a green base, I figured I would treat myself to an old favorite…

This is quite possibly my favorite tea from Dammann. I’m not the biggest ginger fan, but it is so good in this blend. There’s such a great balance of ginger, lime, and passionfruit that’s not too sweet but not too spicy either. And I can still taste the base tea, which is sweet and mellow with dry grassy notes.

So. Effing. Good.

Flavors: Citrus, Dry Grass, Ginger, Lime, Passion Fruit, Sweet

Preparation

Lime and passionfruit sounds amazing!

Hmm…

I think this one is suffering from age, it’s surprisingly weak given the amount of leaf I used for the mugful. I do taste the pineapple this time, along with coconut (eyeroll).

But that’s about it, aside from a vague sweetness. Another one for the list of samples to order again for a second try!

I have a $50 giftcard from them that I bought myself last Black Friday, but I always have too much tea in my cupboard to justify an order! This is one that I can’t wait to have back on my shelf.

Cameron B.

They have sooo many new teas since I was last here a couple of years ago, and I want to try most of them! Another sample order is definitely imminent, ha ha.

drank Main Squeeze by DAVIDsTEA

So I finally went through my (physical) cupboard earlier and pulled out a few teas that were getting low into a sipdown box. I’m hoping to get a cup or two of these teas in each day until they’re gone, because I just have way too many teas. And I have a small box full of unopened teas that I’m planning to leave that way until I finish off a few things.

Anyway, this is the first of those sipdown teas! This is one of a few David’s teas that I still have kicking around, I don’t tend to buy their teas anymore as they’re just not my favorite, especially for the price. That’s not to say I don’t like some of their teas, and this is one of them.

This is a nice sweet and orangey tea that I find both relaxing and refreshing. The maté is mildly herbaceous and sweet as well, so they make a lovely pair. I find myself enjoying green maté blends lately, I really should order some plain to try. There is a somewhat odd tongue tingling sensation at the end of the sip, I’m not sure what that’s from?

Anyway, a very pleasant tea that I am happy to sip down.

Flavors: Herbaceous, Orange, Powdered Sugar, Smooth, Sweet

Love doing that! There’s nothing better than clearing stuff out! Yay for a sipdown!

Cameron B.

Technically it’s not a sipdown yet. But soon!

Courtney

Whooops haha!

I like tea hoarding but not TEA HOARDING. haha

Cameron B.

There’s a fine line between stocking up and hoarding, LOL. :P

Made this as a latte, because it’s getting chillier here lately and because I can!

Anyway, this is a delicious mug of sugar bomb. I also used vanilla almond milk, so extra vanilla! Mostly it tastes creamy and über sweet with vanilla and mild spicing. I definitely get clove, anise, and maybe ginger, not so much cinnamon. There’s a tiny bit of warming heat on the back of my palate too, so perhaps black pepper or chili?

Mostly it tastes like a mugful of cookie, and I’m fine with that.

Oops, just realized the tin is expired by about two weeks. So now another tin is on its way to me! XD I chose the plain Tiger version this time…

Flavors: Anise, Black Pepper, Clove, Cookie, Sugar, Sweet, Vanilla

Preparation
6 tsp 8 OZ / 236 ML

Another one from Arby (I think). I’ve never had a yellow tea that I can remember, so this should be quite interesting. The leaves are long and spindly, with a mix of dull grey-brown and light gold. They look fairly similar to a Yunnan black tea, and smell a bit similar too.

This is certainly an interesting one. To me, it’s like a mix between a light Yunnan black tea and a dragonwell tea. The beginning of the sip is more Yunnan, with bread and some malty notes, and a light stonefruit flavor. In the middle of the sip, a strong buttery quality appears, and some nutty dragonwell-esque notes. The end is a little bit bitter, and I probably should’ve steeped this at a lower temperature… A light floral hit in the aftertaste as well?

It’s definitely interesting. Holding off on rating until I can try the rest of the sample with a lower water temperature.

I had the ancient tin of Yellow Fairy in my hands yesterday…poor teas so old. I should steep some up.

Cameron B.

Well at least with straight teas, they generally continue to taste great for many years. :)

Good morning, Steepster.

This one is from an old Sips By box. I’m actually getting quite close to finishing all of those, right in time for my new box to arrive I’m sure. ;)

I felt this had quite a peppery scent dry, which was certainly unusual for an Assam. Then when I poured the hot water over the leaves, I was struck by a lovely aroma of honey and golden raisins. Ahh…

In the cup though, it mostly tastes as I would expect for an Indian Assam tea. The notes in the forefront are malt, tobacco, and raisin, and even though I kept the steep short, it has a fairly strong astringency. If I look, I do find some nice subtle flavors of honeyed figs and hay though, which are quite pleasant.

It’s tasty enough, though Assam is never quite my thing, and I also have a very good one in my cupboard already for when I get a craving.

It’ll be quite interesting to see what I get in my first Sips By box after re-signing up. Since I think a lot of the partner companies are different now than they were before, plus I took the survey again and I’m sure my tastes have changed…

Flavors: Astringent, Fig, Hay, Honey, Malt, Raisins, Tannic, Tobacco

Preparation

The fig and honey sounds good! Which Assam do you keep around? I’ve not found one to keep around, though I’ve tried very many either!

Cameron B.

I love fig, too. I have a tin of Andrews & Dunham’s Tiger Assam.

Courtney

Ahh yes. Fig is so good when done right, the DF blend is pretty tasty with fig! Also, just love figs in general. :)

I really don’t understand…

I get a strong coconut flavor from this. I do taste pepper, and milk chocolate, and maybe a hint of pineapple at the end of the sip. But the strongest note is coconut.

I feel like I’m crazy, because not a single tasting note mentions coconut at all. But I can’t imagine how this would’ve gotten contaminated, it’s in a sealed sample pouch in a drawer with other sealed sample pouches…

Clearly I am losing my mind. And clearly this tea is not for me!

Association from the roasted pineapple?

Cameron B.

It’s possible, but I would think if that were the case I would’ve tasted more pineapple…

amandastory516

How strange! I get a pretty strong candied pineapple note from this. I wonder if there is coconut in the flavoring.

Cameron B.

I doubt it, it seems like no one tasted coconut but me! :P

derk

Sometimes with chocolate flavoring I taste and smell coconut. I’m not crazy. You, though, I can’t speak for you :)

Cameron B.

Thanks derk, that could be it! I’ll likely order a second sample of this in the future to give it another chance.

Mastress Alita

For me, I taste it in vanilla flavorings often!

Roswell Strange

Another possibility is that there is coconut in the blend, in the flavouring – since AU doesn’t specify what their flavouring is, it’s entirely possible the a natural or artificial coconut flavouring is being used.

Cameron B.

It is possible, I would just expect someone else besides me would taste it were that the case! :P

Roswell Strange

I am blind – I just saw that amandastory516 pointed this same possibility out. My bad! Anyway, just because no one else tasted it doesn’t mean it’s not possible. You just might have the most perceptive tastebuds of us all ;)

I’m still finding this one quite bland.

The green tea is bland, the maté is bland, I can’t taste the cacao, and the coffee, while pleasant, is very light.

It’s not bad per se, just bland, bland, bland.

Hi, I’m Cameron! I’m a 30-something software engineer currently living in Austin, Texas with my husband and our two pugs, Gobo and Ume. I tend to cycle between my different hobbies, and they include piano, knitting, video games, board games, miniature painting, planners, bento, KBeauty, and – of course – TEA! But really, what I’m best at is “collecting” hobby-related things… ;)

~ 2024 SIPDOWN CHALLENGE! ~
- January Sipdowns: 6
- Total 2024 Sipdowns: 6

I prefer my tea lukewarm or at room temperature and without milk or sugar. I steep Western style, and fluctuate between using big mugs or small teapots depending on the season. Occasionally I’ll brew Gongfu style when I’m in the mood. I’ll also often use a kyusu for Japanese teas.

I am always up for a swap! Just let me know if you’d like to try something in my cupboard.

Tea Preferences:
I enjoy both flavored and unflavored teas in many forms. These days, I drink mostly flavored teas, and I tend to gravitate most toward black, green, oolong, and herbal varieties. I do have a special fondness for straight Japanese green teas, however. I also enjoy maté, rooibos, and honeybush. I love matcha and drink it often! Fruit tisanes are not a favorite, but I’m always willing to try them.

I do not sweeten my teas, and pre-sweetened teas are usually too sweet for me. I also do not enjoy stevia.

Fruit: All of them! My ‘go-to’s tend to be in the red fruits, stonefruit, or citrus spectra. I also really love apple, banana, berry, fig, lychee, melon, pear, and rhubarb flavors. Tropical fruits aren’t among my favorites, but I still enjoy them once in a while – especially passionfruit, mango, and pineapple. I am not generally a fan of coconut in tea, though there are some exceptions.

Dessert: I love creamy vanilla and marshmallow flavors, along with anything in the caramel family such as butterscotch, toffee, or maple. Chocolate is also a favorite, though I’m often disappointed by it in tea. And don’t forget anything buttery, cakey, or cookie-y!

Floral: I’m a little bit more particular in this category. I very much enjoy jasmine, even strong jasmine, along with sakura, chamomile, and elderflower. Osmanthus is also a favorite of mine. But I’m not crazy about rose or lavender flavors, and I prefer hibiscus in moderation only.

Spices: I don’t generally find myself drawn to masala chai, but I do enjoy spices combined with other flavors. My favorite spices are the warm ones, especially cinnamon, nutmeg, anise, and cardamom. A bit of heat from black pepper or chili is okay too, as long as it’s not overwhelming! Ginger can be a lovely accent, but I find it difficult to drink as a starring flavor.

Aromatics: I’m obsessed with Earl Grey! I also love cooling flavors such as mint (especially spearmint), pine, juniper, and eucalyptus. I am not a fan of strong rosemary or sage in tea.

Favorite Companies:
3 Leaf
Bird & Blend
Dammann Frères
Harney & Sons
Kyoto Obubu Tea Farms
Lupicia
Old Barrel Tea Co
Simpson & Vail
Taiwan Tea Crafts
TeaVivre

Tea Rating Scale:
90-100: Outstanding! Permanent cupboard resident
80-89: Great – a possible staple
70-79: Good, but I wouldn’t buy it
60-69: It’s decent
50-59: Meh… I may or may not have finished the cup
40-49: Ick. Couldn’t finish it.
00-39: Repulsive, I spat it out

I will sometimes refrain from rating a tea if I feel I’m too biased due to my personal dislikes, or if I suspect the sample has been compromised by age or scent contamination.
