650 Tasting Notes

Tasting note 400! Woo! Last week, I made my first Butiki order, and Stacy send this as a sample. I had a couple cups while waiting for the peach pie to bake (it turned into a cobbler hybrid somehow). The scent was mostly stonefruits, especially peach, and some notes of pecans. There is a lot of peachy in the flavour as well, a bit malty, and nuts. If I ever made a peach pecan pie, it might taste like this. It is also my first Nilgiri tea.

Flavors: Peach, Pecan, Stonefruits

I just realized that I have no idea what the difference is between pie and cobbler. Google is not being helpful. :-/ Is the difference in the kind of dough used?

Lariel of Lórien

Usually cobbler is a filling covered with biscuit or batter, where as pie is a filling in a pastry dough which makes a crust.

Ohhhh. Thanks!

Tried in the store because it smelled so good. The scent was sweet, and tropical. It smelled nicely the pineapple, with hints of coconut, and some floral from the oolong. There was a light and fruity flavour. I have liked their flavoured oolongs a lot, but it seems I always try them in the wrong season. This one would be better earlier in the year.

Flavors: Coconut, Floral, Fruity, Pineapple, Sweet, Tropical

This reminded me a bit of the Milk Caramel (which I got this time). It has a nice sweet, nutty scent. The flavour is a stronger chestnut, and I taste the green base a little. Overall, an interesting flavour that would good for Autumn.

This was one I wanted to try because of the scent. It smells like a dark chocolate bar, and also a rich hot cocoa. That is what comes out the flavour- rich, smooth, and creamy chocolate. Will be nice to have chocolate in tea form for the Autumn season.

I got this sample from Stephanie, because I wanted to try more Butiki teas.

This smells nice, a bit herbal… but mostly like a creamy black tea. The flavour makes me think of an Irish Breakfast blend if I added a lot of cream to it. Overall, I like the creamy black tea, but I’m not really getting much cheesecake.

I’d never tried a Japanese pu’erh before, so this was something I got sent in a swap. It has a somewhat earthy scent, along with fruit. Maybe… plums. The flavour kinda dark and malty, with some hints of fruit. Since I brewed it in a steeper I’d used for a mint tea, I get some mint as well. Overall, it’s different… but good.

Another that came as a sample from my classmate. It smelled so nice as leaves. Brewed- there is mostly a berry scent, with some apple. In the flavour, the berry still comes out more. Mostly, it’s just a sweet green tea.

Flavors: Berry, Green

I find that I am usually disappointed by fruity green teas. :(

Lariel of Lórien

Yeah, I am liking their fruity black teas more.

Because I wanted to try some green tea, I got this one too. Apples! It smells so nicely like apples. Not so much Autumn apples, but Japanese apple candies. The flavour is fruity, mildly sweet, apple, and I like the base green.

This would be something I’d like to try iced.

I got to try this iced. Mmm… grapes. There is a nice, fruity scent. The flavour is sweet, and certainly tastes like muscat. Somehow a lot of their fruit flavoured teas end up tasting like Japanese candies I like. This one reminds me of a certain gummy candy.

Liked it, but I prefer the oolong.

This is one of the teas my classmate sent when she went back to the store.

Such an interesting sounding tea, so I had to try. There is a nice roasted, sweet scent, slightly nutty scent. The caramel came out more in the flavour, it made for a very different tasting pairing with the houjicha. I was surprised how much I liked it, and it made me think of dessert. Perhaps a dessert I need to make. (Now I want to try other flavoured houjicha.)
