drank Bailin Gongfu Black Tea by Teavivre
1500 tasting notes

Wowza, the super small, curled leaves kinda surprised me. Drinking it reminds me of a lighter, more caramel and less chocolate version of Laoshan Black, with a hint of honey. It’s quite lovely, and I may just need to add this to my wishlist to get more at some point. As it stands, it was a freebie sample that Teavivre sent me (thank you!) and I’m sharing the rest with someone that I think might enjoy it just as much.

Flavors: Caramel, Honey

Preparation
195 °F / 90 °C 2 min, 0 sec 2 tsp 12 OZ / 354 ML

Hm…. light and super creamy with the smell of caramel, even though it’s lacking a bit for me with caramel flavor, it’s still delicious. Thank you to Suziqzer for sending this to me!

On an unrelated note: Mother’s Day. Happy days to all of you who are celebrating as mothers, with your mothers, or with other people’s mothers. This (used) to be a really challenging day for me, when I was still grieving my Mom’s passing (I was 16, she was 45). Once I got through that first year of celebrations however, things became easier, to the point of where I forgot the pain or sadness at all, and now only think of her fondly.

Why am I sharing this? Because a gent I dated briefly, who ended things because he “needed to figure things out,” is having his first Mother’s Day since his mother passed late last year. Part of him trying to figure things out was realizing he needed more time to mourn and release, and I understood that completely (and did the same thing with a relationship I’d just started prior to my Dad passing, many years ago).

And so, I dedicate my tea-drinking, the lovely peonies sitting on my desk right now, and all of my happy, warm-and-fuzzy thoughts to those struggling with today for whatever reason that may be. I hope that you all find joy and peace in the comfort of knowing you’re far from alone, and that it really does get better.

drank Hello Sweetie by Butiki Teas
1500 tasting notes

This is one of those teas that, if described to me, I likely would have never tried it. However JustJames so graciously sent me some of his custom blend, that I had to try it. I drove through that sample a long time ago, and this is my first time drinking it from an order.

And.. amazing. I find this better than I remember! It’s creamy and delicious.

VariaTEA

Every time someone comments on how delicious this is, it makes me that much more excited for mine to arrive :)

MissB

Soon…. soon! :) I look forward to seeing what you think of it.

VariaTEA

I have had it a few times before and I loved it.

Plunkybug

It’s definitely on my list for when I place my order.

drank Chocolate Macaroon by DAVIDsTEA
1500 tasting notes

Had this iced in-store today, and was surprised at how sweet it was with zero additions. Yep, there’s way too much (and I had it unsweetened — there’s a LOT of sugar in there).

So, with that in mind? It’s a decent tea. Reminded me a lot of Chocolate Orange (a puerh blend from DAVIDs), but with coconut for added creaminess instead of orange. I liked it. Not enough to buy it.

2 tsp 12 OZ / 354 ML

You were smart, trying it in the store first

drank Lemon French Macaron by Butiki Teas
1500 tasting notes

Only fitting that my 1000th tasting note is such a delicious tea! (and yes, I did make a point of putting a tea that I love here).

Stuck it in my Timolino prior to going on a first date, walking around rainy Central Park. I brought him tea! Heh. Anyway, I had my first sip as I walked up on the date, and I actually stopped in my tracks. So good! Creamy, light, lemony, fluffy, very much like a sweet macaron. Have to admit, now that it’s cooled, I like the tea less. It was by far the best hot, and it’s been six hours since I made it with the lid off, so…

Definitely yummy though, just wish that these last few sips tasted as mind-blowingly great as the first few.

Preparation
200 °F / 93 °C 3 min, 30 sec 4 tsp 16 OZ / 473 ML
ohfancythat

Wow! congrats on the huge milestone!

ohfancythat

Ps did your date enjoy the tea? :)

Courtney

Woot 1000!

MissB

He said prior to meeting he’s a fan of EGs and English Breakfast teas, so I pretended it was a one-way swap and brought him samples to try on his own. He was surprised. ;) Sadly, I think we’re a better match for others, however it was still an enjoyable time. He shared the best Johnny Depp story ever!

Suziqzer

Yeah 1000!! Hope your date went well!

ohfancythat

Aw cute :)

Johnny Depp story! Cool!

Terri HarpLady

congrats on 1000!

Dustin

Soooooo???? What was the JD story?

Roswell Strange

Congrats on 1000!!!

MissB

Thanks everyone! :)

JD story: there were a lot of personal details in it that kind of make the story, but in a nutshell… said date worked with JD many years ago in one of his first projects, and they stayed in touch. JD was visiting another actor they both knew prior to Hallowe’en, and my date suggested he crash a party as Captain Jack Sparrow, because the person throwing the party was dressing up as such. I guess Monsieur Depp loved this idea, did it, used the accent and everything, and blew the guests away. Supposedly there are pictures, of which I am eager to see. :)

Dustin

That is awesome! I love hearing about famous people not taking themselves too seriously and having fun. It makes them more rounded and real instead of just the glamour hollywood facade. Like when Bill Murray crashes parties and bar tends!

Sil

Woohooo, Grats on 1000 notes! Sounds like the date was a little fun at the least :)

Ubacat

Congrats on the 1000 tasting note! Loved the Johnny Depp story

ohfancythat

Awesome story!!

Terri HarpLady

yeah, you gotta out at least a couple more times, so you can view the pics! LOL

Congrats on 1000! The tasting note & comments were fun to read :)

drank Casablanca by Mariage Frères
1500 tasting notes

So surprised at the rating on this one (78) since all the reviews I see are high – higher than 78. I steeped this a bit long for me (5 minutes), and so there’s a bit of astringency in there at the end of the sip that I’m not a fan of. Having said that, this is a very creamy blergamot (I can barely taste it), and I’m missing any sort of minty flavor or feeling. I’ll need to try this again at a three minute steep and see if I feel differently then.

Preparation
200 °F / 93 °C 5 min, 0 sec 2 tsp 12 OZ / 354 ML
Dustin

Was “blergamot” on purpose? I don’t know why I find it so funny, but I laugh/snorted when I read it!

MissB

Ha! :) Yes, although in all fairness, I stole it from another Steepsterite… Sil perhaps?

Sil

Aye….stupid blergamot ;)

221tea

“blergamot” is my favorite word

cteresa

If you get the chance try brewing it a bit colder. Maybe 80-85? This is a weird tea, a mix of black and green, and with me I find it works better the colder I brew it. It´s kind of my default in-a-hurry hot tea, I can make it with not so hot water, wait a couple seconds and it´s ready to sip down just as soon as brewed.

Cold brewed also great and very minty that way!

Dustin

I didn’t get this tea at all until I cold steeped it and added some cream and sugar. It then went from eh to wow. I second the cold steep recommendation.

drank Chai Wallah by SAHARA TEA
1500 tasting notes

Well, I steeped this too long. It says on the package 7-10 minutes (what?) so that’s what I did, however it’s just plain too long for this tea. It’s a bit bitter and strong (for me), which is pretty unusual for me to say. This is a bold, strong chai, full of flavors and spices. I’ll steep it less next time to see if I enjoy it more.

Preparation
200 °F / 93 °C 8 min or more 2 tsp 12 OZ / 354 ML

i thought that said sarah tea and was excited for a second…

Ha! That’s your new tea company name, isn’t it? ;)

drank Chai Chocolate by Simpson & Vail
1500 tasting notes

I really do love this tea, and am surprised with the lower reviews on it. It’s creamy and chocolatey (although it always could be more so), and a mild chai in return due to the creaminess. Really enjoyed this yesterday evening!

Preparation
200 °F / 93 °C 3 min, 0 sec 2 tsp 12 OZ / 354 ML
Suziqzer

I really do need to place an order with them one of these days!

MissB

If I remember correctly, it’s better if you order a whole whack with them at once to get better shipping. Did I send you some of this to try?

Suziqzer

Yeah, I’m compiling a list of things I want to order from them. I think $50 is their free shipping mark. I have a couple you sent samples of that I want more of and several I’ve been considering. I have their catalog and it could get dangerous, so many sound good. You didn’t send this one but Candy Cane, Coconut Macaroon, and Root Beer… all good :)

Suziqzer

I don’t think I’ve seen too many reviews of their teas that weren’t good, so I feel pretty safe ordering most anything from them.

A package from Permission Tree magically appears on my doorstep today.

“Huh?”I think to myself. “I didn’t order any tea from them. Or, did I?”

I walk upstairs, boil some water in anticipation, and open the small box. Oooh. I see! It seems the Tea Fairy (not TheTeaFairy on here, ha!) sent me some tea as a thank you, and in this case, it’s Suziqzer. So unexpected, unnecessary, and yet absolutely wonderful at the same time. I’m so excited!

Some really lovely options in the box, all of which I’m excited to try. This one however, this sample, it called to me to drink it.

The smell was a bit earthy and surprising, considering the ingredients. After steeping however and drinking it, I’m hooked. There’s a dryness to it (likely from the cacao), akin to eating a large amount of hazelnuts with the skin still on. I get the faint hazelnut flavor too, although it tricks me somewhat — there’s chocolate, coconut (only to add smoothness, as I detect little in the flavor itself) and creamy nut-likeness. I’d say this is the closest things to a Nutella tea that I’ve had.

Thanks again Suziqzer, for my first taste of Permission Tree!

Oh my Nutella Tea! Who would have known?! I gathered from the description it would be nutty cocoa, but didn’t consider nutella to come of it. Yeah! Glad it was enjoyable!

Profile

Bio

A few years ago, the obsession with tea started. The cupboard got bigger and bigger, more swaps occurred, group buys, secret rendezvous with local teapassionistas… and that’s how you end up with 500+ different kinds of tea in your home. At one time.

Almost all of the tea was given away, sold, or otherwise shared. A few relics still remain. I now travel full time with only two carryon bags to my name. One quarter of those bags are tea.

It’s still a challenge to avoid the chipmunk-like hoarding of The Teas, yet, the lightness of being from having so little compels me more.

If I have enough, I’m happy to share. If I’m in your area, I’d love to swap, meet for tea, and explore together.

As for the day-to-day stuff, I’m focused almost entirely on Love, (yes, with a capital L), Spirit/Self, transformation, travel and my writing and speaking work.

What kinds of teas do I normally like?

YES: flavored teas, fruity, dessert, chai, and spicy (REALLY spicy).

A FONDNESS FOR: all white teas, malty black teas, any herbal or medicinal teas, strange/weird teas you can only get in one place.

ALLERGIC TO: strawberries, lavender

DISLIKES: any added sugars, grains, lapsang souchong, and overly floral teas – I might enjoy a Jasmine Green every once in a while, but unless it’s a creamy floral tea (think roses in a chai, or the smoothness of a floral note in a French tea), I’ll likely pass. Earl Greys are a hit or miss with me; heavy on the cream or fruit notes and I might like it, heavy on the blergamot and I definitely won’t.
