1113 Tasting Notes

Drank this during the morning hours of work for a few days. A nice texture to the liquid, almost like a broth. A little tannic with some redeeming burnt honey like taste similar to brown sugar. This tea does take a little to open up, but it can take a good 3 steeps without loosing any interesting qualities. I probably get around 5 steeps everytime I brew this tea up. Probably one of the better highly/fully oxidized teas I’ve had this. year. I look forward to trying more of Chen’s tea as I have over 30 now : )

After the Pubertea buy… I was too tempted to pick up some stuff that was priced well and then after buying that circular metal thing I was like wooops’. The tea community has always been awesome so I decided to put together a blind tasting of three teas that I still have access to. One is a 14 year old iron cake that was dry stored.

I was really tempted and tried it. It’s this tea that has helped change my mind about iron cakes as I found a lot of depth going on through lots of opening flavors. Really good stuff!

Last weekend I moved, but the week before I had the last tea gathering at my old place!

Some new friend from WV drove three hours over to join and a few other drove over an hour as well… so I pulled out some awesome teas : )

One of the teas was the 2015 breakthrough Mengku from Global Tea Hut. Very beautiful full leaf with a light refreshing taste. Looking forward to the second/last taste which will be this weekend as I host a GTH tasting at my new place.

So as I am packing up to move and all, just… spur of the moment I decided to take some private cakes and split them for mystery samples for some people. Tonight I decided to try a little of one while I enjoy the silence of the night and all the buzzing of my phone, but before all that THE BREWWWWWWWWWW

Alright, alright, alright…. so you all know that this site is one of my major online social outlets. Not only has this site connected me to so many people, it has enriched my life through the connectivity of the online tea community. So to keep it brief and move on to more tea: I got engaged.

So yeah, I’m in a fantastic food and shall be for quite some time : )

I went ahead and revisited the 1800yr sheng from Verdant that was in the Sheng Olympaid before… what a great tea. That’s all I need to say. No drama needed; I understand it all.

drank 2003 Manzhuan by Sunsing Tea
1113 tasting notes

This tea has the most longevity out of any aged raw puerh that I’ve tried to date.
I went through over 30 steeps of this at 5g/60ml

The color is a little more transparent than I thought it would be so I was like ‘ahhh man this wasn’t aged as much as I wanted!’ but then the taste… this is a cleaner storage taste than most of the other Sunsing cakes that I’ve tried at this point. Leaf was and is very dark! Good mix of material in this cake which makes me glad because older cakes with this blend isn’t the norm for what I have bought.

This session kept a really strong grass and earthy balance that made it very enjoyable without having any of that dank/damp taste going on. As I got towards the end it sweetened up which was pretty odd, but enjoyable.
Part of me is curious if this could go a second day… :p

Really good stuff. Somewhat delicate in a hard way to explain as depth exist but doesn’t demand as much in return to enjoy it… if that makes sense.

Hitting this one today myself.

> without having any of that dank/damp taste going on.

It has that wet stone taste of HK storage though, what I’d consider a humid taste. Enough humidity to pretty well hammer out most of the origin character.

No mold though AFAICT. Smooth, easy drinker. I find myself pushing it pretty hard. Doubt I will stick around for 30 steeps :)

Liquid Proust

I suppose what I meant was just clean age?

Random…. yes, random… Last week I attempted to write notes as I drank a 1997 oolong and it did not work, but here’s how far I got :P

Steep 1, 30 seconds 95c
Aroma starts to come off like dry cocoa dust in the air and some juicy/wet plum. Leaf integrity isn’t all that, but with aged tea I look for consistency in aroma/taste as the session goes on. The liquid is quite thin and rolls off the checks quick while it sticks on the tongue with a nice plum like sweet/tart balance as the mineral notes combine from the brew. The level of roast on this tea is pretty much gone so I would consider it a ‘light roast’ tasting tea; one thing to note about that roast dissipating over time is you taste storage or lack thereof which this is a mixture of both. Sides of the mouth picks up on a tad of old leaf that is similar to huangpian; dry funkiness, in very subtle side notes.
Steep 2, 30 seconds 95c
Liquid being hot and the way it is makes it appear to be semi oily. The taste has gone down in strength a lot as no roast is left. Very easy going and smooth with a possible sweetness coming through.

Now, I use Steepster as an outlet for all sorts of things since a lot of my friends are in the tea community here so let’s just drop why life is blah and reviews are not frequent. Last weekend my in an accident where she was hit; she is fine, her car is not. Yesterday my best friend had someone run a red light in front of him and his car was totaled; he is also fine. Over the course of the 14 years I have had a license, these are the only two accidents that involve people I know on a deep level. Being that they are slow close together in time, my mind is very… I have no idea how to word it…. the unwanted what if questions come in and my emotions are uncontrollable. All I want is some peace from the negative thoughts…

Thankful they are both okay. Cars are just objects. It takes so much energy out of me to stay calm and keep reserved in moments that someone has put people I love in harms way… but I must remind myself that I also love the one I am angry at in the moment as they are just another person with a life as valuable as my friends/family.

Anyways, tonight I am drinking some Lao E Man with hopes that energy fills me!

That’s rough. It’s important to let these feelings and thoughts out where you can, happy you feel you can use this community in that way.

mrmopar

The good you exude will always allow you to overcome any negative issues in the world. You are a well thought of friend on here.

Last weekend I was in Indianapolis with two great fiends. A small mini vacation for us guys to enjoy a city over the extended weekend as the 4th of July came around.

A little prep work was done in regards to going on this trip and it turned out wonderfully. Met up with someone who has shared passions with me and drank the first stuff from the 2018 Sheng Olympiad which I was told is much like a cake from Crimson Lotus Tea which makes me smile. The Jingmai material is wonderful and I look forward to sharing it with everyone when the time comes: https://www.instagram.com/p/BWBq_u_gANd/

On this trip there was some unplanned tea drinking as well as all kinds of stuff… rather than write about it all I will share a picture. So to set this up, I met a new tea friend who said they were just getting in to puerh and this is what I saw: https://www.instagram.com/p/BWEKUGegobM/

No messing around there! Imagine how that’ll turn out after 5-10-20 years… I am jealous.

Something about sharing the passion for tea with others makes me feel most alive. Connecting people with people through tea will always be my end goal for my involvement here and it has been a great trip thus far.

Looking forward to meeting more of you as time goes on. Michigan, Kentucky, Ohio New York, Pennsylvania, West Virginia, Indiana…. and much more within the next year : )

This 1998 Dayi from Malaysia is top notch! https://www.instagram.com/p/BV5yXSLgxW_/ : ) so excited to hear what everyone says about it when Pubertea goes out!

So random non tasting notes since this is kind of where I write things out and all.
GF got in a car accident today but she’s fine. Whirlwind of a day as I was at work for 20 minutes and sent a message to my boss saying I will be back… had to go.
Driving to Indianapolis on Saturday to have a weekend in the city : ) and I am going to have my first taste of the selected tree Jingmai that I had done for the 2018 Sheng Olympiad.
Lastly, I am close to building two pumidors from ground up. I was thinking that the pubertea buys would be really cool if I had two samples of a few teas stored 3,5, or xx years in 60 percent versus 70 percent… still playing with the idea. That would mean I would have 3 pumidors though, but my current one cost me $40 so it wasn’t that big of a commitment. I think space will be the issue here, hmmmmm
(I might be crazy)

mrmopar

Nope I have 4 of them and need another. I am glad the GF is ok. I drive a big truck and just about got whacked by one on the way to work yesterday.

Sqt

Space is almost always the issue!

MadHatterTeaDrunk

I still need to acquire a proper one myself. In fact, I should work on finding one now.
