400 Tasting Notes

Note 100!

A sample swapped with CWarren a few months back. I’ve just finished this off, so I thought I’d make a note about it before heading to bed.

First off, never have this later than you should. My “normal” ending time for tea is at 5 p.m. However, due to an eventful series of events (my wife dislocating her arm at work, eye doctor appointment, and the A.C. guy coming to fix the unit) I was unable to get to this at the time I was planning on having it. Therefore, I started drinking it at 7:30 p.m., and am fully awake until 12 or so.

Okay, back to the tea. It’s quite good. It has a solid citrus-y note about it. Not fishy like other pu-erh stuffed tangerines/oranges that I’ve had. It’s very mellow and sweet, with a slight kick to it. I hadn’t noticed the tea’s affects until I was playing Battlefront online, and I started “Chewy-ing it up,” as my brother called it. However, I calmed down afterwards, while talking tea via phone/online.

Overall, I liked this session. But now, I’m getting tired and need to start settling down for the night….or try to.

Thanks again, CWarren!

Quick Note:

I’ve been drinking this for nearly an hour now, with an occasional break from the tea to drink water. I’m pretty tea drunk, I must say.

Anyway, this is a nice sweet mushroom/honey-esq tea. Definitely a great tea to have on a daily basis, or if you’re trying to wake up, but getting extremely giddy while doing so. I’m on steep six, but I had to stop for a moment to gather my senses (however, how I feel momentarily isn’t bad, of course). My wife’s tea-loving friend is stopping by later, so maybe I’ll continue the session with her.

I used 6.5 grams for a 120 ml Yixing pot. I steeped this for 15s, 20s, 30s, 30s, 35s, & 45s.

Also, it’s hot inside the house. The AC crashed, so I’m having to sit in front of a fan while drinking the tea. The landlord said that he can’t get here until Thursday to fix it, so I’m going to have to make several trips around the block to cool off….That, or go ahead and buy that kiddy pool I’ve always wanted for the backyard.

Crimson Lotus Tea

I vote for kiddy pool!

Fjellrev

Jumping through sprinklers always helps too haha.

MadHatterTeaDrunk

I might go ahead and get both! The kiddy pool will be nice sit in while having a cup of tea. ;)

A cup of malty good liquor. I’m drinking the second half of the sample in my Gaiwan, and I must say that it’s pretty good stuff. I noted a few days ago that it released a lot of caffeine through my veins and kept me energized for the 50 students at Summer Camp.

However, this tea is wonderful. I enjoy the nutty-malty-chocolaty undertones to the brew; which fortunately will allow me stay up later tonight on the account that it’s Friday, and that I don’t need to be anywhere tomorrow morning.

On a side note: I had recently experienced a mishap to my electric water kettle, and had to purchase a second one—although much more fancy than the last—which allows me to brew to the precise temperature needed for each tea. Plus, it was a fairly priced pot that I was discounted due to the frequent stops that I make at the local shop. The owner even gave a few samples to try that he thought I’d like; which was thoughtful.

A somewhat refreshing tea. It was hot outside in North Carolina on the day we had the pig roast. I wanted some tea, but I wanted to drink something cold. Therefore, there was some cold brewed tea at the in-laws. I didn’t add sugar to mine—as the tea was already sweet on its own—and it seemed to fit with the need of tea/wanting to be refreshed. I wouldn’t drink this again, but it was nice a fruity for a hot day.

Anyway, side story: On the day of the pig roast, my wife’s great uncle (94) passed out at the party caused by the heat. It was pretty bizarre to see people standing around, eating, and claiming that “It was his time, let’s eat….”

P.S. I’ve been busy with work and this adoption process, to the point where I haven’t had the time to write much. However, I’ll get back to it again soon…..!

Nice to see you around! That’s so insane that they would say something like that about the great uncle. Hoping the adoption process is going alright.

MadHatterTeaDrunk

It was bizarre. I thought to myself, “Geez, my family’d call the ambulance and would stop the party…” Not my wife’s family, though. The process is nearly complete….Four more weeks! :)

ashmanra

Wow! My mother-in-law passed out from heat about two years ago but we carried her in the house and called an ambulance! Where in NC were you? I live in the Sandhills, about an hour from the SC line and 2 hours from the beach. It is miserably hot and sticky.

MadHatterTeaDrunk

@ashmanra, Goldsboro.

First off, this is the tea that allows you to get drunk (not the type of drunk that’s inappropriate whilst driving) without the hangover the following morning. It’s the type of drunk that leaves you satisfied & hyper; focused and giddy.

Now, I love pu-erh and rum. I love pu-erh a little more these days, but this allows me the satisfaction of having both. What can get better than rum infused pu-erh goodness?

Nothing.

Allow me to say that Liquid Proust, you are a master at tea blending. I mean that. This is a solid tea. I had to call my rum-loving friend over to try it.

He said, “Woah, son, give me more of that liquid.”

I had a total of 3 sessions with this yesterday. About 8 steps each session. I like the first three steeps the best due to the high amount of rum that comes through the tea. However, 5-8 has a nice smooth and rich pu-erh note to it, that it is still good without the rum. No astringency to it.

If you’ve yet to try this, I’d suggest getting a few packages. I’m going to look into getting stocked up after I return from North Carolina.

Maybe then I can get a kayak, too, and call myself a River Dwelling Pu Pirate.

That’d be sweet.

Sincerely,

Capt. Pu-Head

Super Starling!

I love love love that you added “River Dwelling Pu Pirate” to your profile. You have an excellent joie de vivre.

MadHatterTeaDrunk

@CWarren, I’m officially “the captain of tea” among my kayaking friends (because I told them that I was the now a River Dwelling Pu Pirate). @Super Starling! Thank you. I try my best to find great enjoyment in life, no matter how odd my choices may seem. ha-ha :)

drank Kung Fu by Bruce Tea
400 tasting notes

Needed a quick fix of caffeine today. Found this at Giant Eagle while searching for bottled water. After drinking this an hour, I’m hyped up and full of energy. I could’ve handled the 40 kids for the field trip to the zoo today; unfortunately, I was sent home 7 hours early and now have to make my time useful at home. Therefore, I’m cleaning the house from top to bottom for the first of four home studies tomorrow night.

I started drinking this late last night. I was in the mood to actually sit and watch a movie (it usually takes me a few sittings to watch a movie….my ADHD kicks in after 45 minutes).

Anyway, this was pretty solid. I turned this into a latte. It helped bring that caramel out with the “hot movie butter” flavor. Quite unique. No artificial flavors, which is nice.

Thank you, Liquid Proust, for adding this to the box.

This is me making a note to review the tea tonight. Off to work now, though.

Backlog 18 June 2016

I had started writing notes on the review last weekend. However, I must’ve become distracted as I often do whilst in the middle of the session…Although, according to these notes, the time was several minutes after a shu pu-erh session, so I’m guessing that I was pretty ‘tea drunk’ during this session (there are pictures in the review notebook alongside the notes).

Anyway, let us move on.

The dry leaf: Smells of a metallic, chocolate, and nuts (odd mix of aromas for a white tea). It is a light green/brown color. The tips of the leaf are slightly brown/black; with a slight hue of silver along the leaf.

I used a slightly higher temperature of water for this tea, for whatever reason. It seemed to work well with the leaf, so I kept it at 200 F. I used 5 grams of the leaf for 150 ml of water.

First steep: 15 s. There seems to be a slight malty and nutty taste on the tongue. The liquor is ‘clear/light green,’ so the flavor is surprising compared to its color. I’m reminded of a black tea that is less bold.

Second steep: 25 s. The physical leaf is opening up—it has a green-ish hue—reminds me of a raw pu-erh. There is more of a vegatal aroma, but the flavor is still malty & nutty. There appears to be a hint of jasmine, too.

Third steep: Malty vegatal flavors. I jotted down, “tastes like Spring rather than Autumn….fresh leaf quality…like spinach, perhaps.”

Unfortunately, that is all I had noted. Apparently, I had traced the wet leaf onto the paper & made some doodles of eating some sort of food out of as bowl. Ha-ha.

Good tea, though.

Well, quick thought before I dig into the review. It has been a LONG week. I’ve had forty students this week, and after spending a total amount of 120 hours with them between three weeks, I think we’ve all gone a bit daffy. I love them all, but after this week, I need tea—and a lot of it.

I wanted some tea that was stronger than Sencha, Chamomile, or an herbal/rooibos blend; therefore, I dug this tea out from the “Samples from Tea Friends” box. Yeah, I happened to start drinking it after 7:00 P.M., when I needed a full eight hours so that I could get up the following day at 5:45 A.M. to get ready for the day. However, I was so hyper/tea drunk, that I ended up saying, “The heck with it, I’ll keep drinking tea” until 12:30 A.M. And the result was a bit interesting.

A quick note on the flavor/color of the liquor before I decide to run away from the computer, to spend the day lost in the woods…..It was an enjoyable ripe pu-erh, and the chrysanthemum gave it a nice sweet floral bite. I jotted down, “malty floral flavors, with those wet wood, earthy, and sweet river nectar (?) notes.”

Overall, ‘twas a great session.

P.S. This sample was given to me by Kirkoneill1988 via tea swap. Thank you. It was quite fun.

P.P.S. This is a cheap tea that’ll blow your mind and get ya pretty tea drunk. Great for a mid-afternoon pick-me-up.

Looks like you have some company in those pictures! ;)
This tea sounds quite exciting, and as I have some loose snow chrysanthemums on hand, now I wonder if I could make my own floral + tea blends with them.

MadHatterTeaDrunk

Go for it. It was a fun little time, and h having “tea pets” for company was fun (really, they’re toys for my inner child from my wife). I think the snow Chrysanthemum goes well with Pu-erh.

Mikumofu

Tea is always better with friends, no matter what shape they come in!
I just happen to have some loose shou pu-erh from my latest order…nice coincidence since I don’t often have any on hand. Will be worth experimenting!

MadHatterTeaDrunk

I hope that you enjoy the session. Let me know how it goes :)

Kirkoneill1988

glad you liked it. i think i have a small chunk left

MadHatterTeaDrunk

Well, you enjoy it. Quite a tasty tea.
