I woke up this morning with a heavy, unsettled feeling. I don’t really know why. Overthinking? Bad dream I don’t remember? General Covid dreams? Sometimes that’s just how it is.
I had five students coming. They were starting earlier than usual. I needed to feel better.I couldn’t decide what to have for breakfast. I paused, stood on tiptoe (yes, I am really short) and said a quick prayer. “Lord, I could really use some tea that would feel comforting this morning.”
Reached in and pulled out THIS TEA. I kid you not. I thought, “Well, yeah, okay, it says it is comforting but now what do I eat with a chai when I am tired of waffles?” Then I remembered some fig jam I had made a few months ago. Fig jam is a very cuddly food to me.
Ding ding ding! Toast with fig jam and Comforting Chai! Things were looking up.
This had all the attributes I expect in a chai, like cinnamon and cardamom and a mouth tingle from the clove, but all slightly softer. The green tea is softer than the Assam tea most companies use as a base for chai, too. It was all nice and warming and….comforting. Just like it says. The spices gave me a good wake up and lots of flavor, with no harsh edges.

Gmathis: I went over and had a listen! I like bluegrass! It was very good and certainly a real pepper-upper! I have to ask my husband why they sprayed WD-40 on the banjo.
Also, I noticed they are from a group called the Purple Hulls. Do people outside of Southern rural communities know what purple hulls are? I don’t think I have ever seen purple hull peas in grocery chains.
You can find purple hulls as far north as we are, sometimes—my parents liked ’em in lieu of blackeyed peas.
The PH’s have one for us Sunday school geeks called “Matthew’s Begats” that made me snort my Irish Breakfast on the way to work one morning.
I will have to look for that!
You can find them canned locally as far north as I am, but I think that may be the outer limits. Have never seen them in the produce section.
As to the PH’s, they just make my heart happy. Go look for their “Matthew’s Begats.” Perfect for Sunday geeks like me :)
So Matthew’s Begats was written by Andrew Peterson, who wrote the song My Love Has Gone Across the Sea, which brings me to ugly crying tears. It was written for The Wingfeather Saga, which I have not yet read.
A friend with preteens highly, highly recommended Wingfeather to me, but I haven’t imbibed just yet. (And I love Andrew Peterson, too.)
