The smell is intoxicating. I almost got drunk off of it, seriously! I felt like I walked into a candy store right after they covered the cherries in steaming chocolate. Coffee beans are ground into fine espresso, filling the air with an aroma of liquor. I’m so glad this came so soon-three papers in the same week-yikes! The customer service is awesome, and it seems that I have some pretty similar tastes to Madhatter. Considering how much I love my coffee, stone fruits, chocolate, and oolongs, this should be no surprise.

Now the taste. I agree with Roswell-the liquid is pretty thin and could use a cleaner mouth feel. I drank the tea while it soaked to test out how it changes. The sweet spot for me might be closer to 2 min 45 or 3 min. I tasted the creaminess of the oolong more at 3 minutes with Hojicka dominating, but I tasted the cherry and the chocolate a little bit more at 2 min and 45. The cherry was natural and perfectly balanced. The chocolate could be a little bit stronger, and I am also pretty partial to cocoa nibs. I’ll have to see how they do in the Green Spumoni. I’m also glad that the coffee wasn’t too dominant and acted as a roasted background, but I wanted the oolong to shine a bit more since this type of yancha also normally has a roasted character.

I did taste more cherry and quilan after a 8-10 minute steep two, but it was still faint. Overall, I’m pretty impressed with this tea. Cream and rock sugar really bring out the other flavors and help balance them out, especially in steep one. I love the type of flavor, but again, I personally want more cocoa nibs and more Quilan to enjoy the tea at its purist. I also need to brew this a few more times to get a better balance of what I’m looking for.

The last sample from A Quarter to Tea — and these samples definitely worked their magic on me — I placed a small order, even though I really didn’t want to be buying tea for a while. I used two and half teaspoons for brewing in a full mug. Even though I tried to steep this the same way as the Chocolate Cherry Latte (and even though that blend is oolong AND hojicha and not just oolong) there is much more flavor from the black twisty roasted oolong itself here but at least it’s a roasted oolong I can love. With the Chocolate Cherry, the flavors mask the oolong and hojicha. My tastebuds don’t seem to find much maple and pecan, mostly just the flavor from the roasted oolong. But possibly I didn’t steep this one perfectly like I think I steeped the Chocolate Cherry. I think I’m just obsessed with the Chocolate Cherry. :D It’s definitely the reason I ordered! I wish I had more to say on this one though.
Steep #1 // 2 1/2 teaspoons for a full mug// 15 minutes after boiling // 3 minute steep
Steep #2 // 10 minutes after boiling // 3-4 minute steep

How would you say it compares to Butiki’s, if you don’t mind my asking?

The Quarter to Tea blends really peaked my interest when she posted to the forum. I was unfortunately a little late to the draw to get in on the free samples, but the teas peaked my curiosity enough that I went ahead and purchased a sample pack. I have been longing for some fun blends again, and these looked like they fit the bill.

This tea is pretty tasty. I mostly get a sweet nutty flavor from the tea. I suspect I am tasting a the banana as the swee" component of the flavor, but it doesn’t jump out as banana. I like the flavor, I think I could use a little more umph in the base of the tea, but overall this is a winner. Yum. Looking forward to trying the rest.

It’s not everyday my husband and I get to dress up as a Rivendell elf and a Nazgul and stand up in a wedding for our friends (who were dressed as The Night Sky and Master Chief — her handmade costume was lit and so gorgeous!), with guest appearances from Poison Ivy, Batman, Drake, Lara Croft, Amy Pond and a few others.

Congratulations to them! It was a fantastic night!

As far as the tea goes, it’s a total comfort tea.

It’s a sweet slightly floral natural orange flavor. The rum kind of binds to the sweetness and has a caramel or spun sugar note. The chocolate slips into the tail of the sip and rounds it out with more depth.

I really love the Assam in this. It’s the necessary, grounding note in the whole cup. It adds a little more natural dark cocoa flavor and a richer body to the cup that keeps the liquor from feeling thin.

Just the pick me up I needed :)

I hope everyone is having a fantastic Halloween!

Yet another sample from A Quarter to Tea – thank you! This is a fun rooibos blend – strawberry, coconut, marshmallows and plenty of sprinkles. I’m not sure if the name is accurate but it sure is tasty! The rooibos is a little woody and also reminds me of BBQ, so this might not be the best rooibos to use for this blend (wouldn’t a honeybush base for this blend be awesome?!) But this is a great no caffeine nighttime treat. Definitely some sweet strawberry there (but sometimes rooibos tastes like that on its own), a flavor that reminds me of frosting or whipped cream… so maybe this is like a strawberry cake or strawberry shortcake? The flavor was probably even better after eating a handful of candy corn. :D The second steep had the same flavor from the lovely goodies but somehow the rooibos was less woody and BBQ like. A perfect blend if only the rooibos would change.
Steep #1 // 1 1/4 teaspoons for a mug // 6 minutes after boiling // 2-3 minute steep
Steep #2 (next night) // couple minutes after boiling // 2-3 minute steep

This was my favourite sample for A Quarter to Tea.

It smells like almonds, nuts, cinnamon and cloves. It reminds me of like a heavy spice cake.

The tea liquor is quite thick. It is also creamy. There are definitely notes of cake and bread. The black tea base is very smooth. No astringency at all. There are flavours of cinnamon and clove but they are not overpowering. I would have almost liked the clove to be a bit stronger. There is a strong nutty flavour to the tea. I am getting just the slightest hint of apple which works really well with the blend. It’s just enough, but not too much.

This tea really reminds me of Christmas/winter flavours, but I would totally drink it all the time.

This is my second free sample from A Quarter to Tea.

Unfortunately there was some scent contamination as this tea in dry form just smells like currants and almonds due to the other samples I also asked for.

I used the whole sample for one cup as the pieces were so large. There were large pieces of dried apple as well as some blueberries in my sample but I do not recall any cherries.

I obviously didn’t do this tea any favours by brewing it hot. I would guess that it would be a better cold brew but I tried hot anyway. Initially hot it tasted ok. It tasted more so like dry champagne that had lost all of the carbonation with a bit of slightly bitter white tea. No fruity flavour. As it cooled there was a bit more of an apple flavour. Like a non-sweet apple cider. It still retained the flat champagne flavour. I did not get much fruit other than hints of apple but that may be due to my sample. The bitterness from the white tea faded as it cooled. There was no taste contamination despite the smell.

I would say it was definitely better as it cooled. It tasted a bit more like a mimosa with not so much citrus in it. I think it would have been better with some kind of sweetener like maybe some honey, but I didn’t have anything at work to add in. But I can definitely see where the sangria part comes in.

I did my sample cold brewed; will likely post my review tomorrow.

Happy Friday Tea People! We had our first freeze last night, and you know, I was going to talk about how the weather is turning cool and that makes me happy…but I can’t, more important things!! Dropfleet Commander’s Kickstarter just went live and ughhhhhhh, the Scourge ships are so pretty. In an eerie Mass Effect Reaper and creepy brain-slug kinda way…which you all know at this point is totally my thing. I love my Scourge, problem is I barely get the time (and money) to play Dropzone Commander and Malifaux, so the last thing I need is another game…but I really want those ships! When this goes to stores I am so going to get a few Scourge ships, paint them all Bio-Mech, and love them forever, because I am such a nerd.

Ok, deep breaths, no more spazzing out over gaming, time to relax with tea. So, tea, today’s tea is from A Quarter To Tea, an awesome Etsy shop that decided to offer some Steepster peeps samples for review, and you know me, I want to try all the teas! I was sent three, and then of course waffled over which to try first…and the one based on one of my favorite ice creams ever won. Presenting Spumoni Green Tea, a blend of Chinese green tea, Organic Sencha, raw pistachios, organic cacao nibs, montamorey cherries, flakes of coconut, yeah they use pistachios! It is a well known fact that my favorite ice creams all contain pistachio, it is a tie between plain ol’ pistachio, Spumoni, and Kulfi…but ice cream and I don’t get along too well, hurts my teeth…so being able to have that flavor is just such an awesome thing. Now, before I forget, A Quarter To Tea was awesome and is offering my readers a 10% off any purchase over $5 before December 15th, just use the code GEEKERY10 for discount goodness. The aroma of the tea is yummy, a triple threat of pistachio nuttiness, cherry sweetness (with a hint of tart) and cocoa richness, yep it smells like Spumoni! Mix in some coconut for creaminess and a slightly toasty note at the finish and you have a tasty smelling tea.

Into my handy steeping apparatus the leaves and fun little bits go for steeping! The aroma wafting out from the steeper is very nutty, coconut and pistachio notes are drifting my way and it is making my mouth water…I have a weakness for nuttiness, seriously I have an industrial sized container of cashews at my desk, I am like a squirrel. There are also notes of cocoa and cherries with a gentle sweetness to the leaves. The liquid is nutty and sweet, leaning more towards nutty than cocoa or cherry.

Moment of truth, will the tea live up to the ice cream hype? In truth, yes! It is like drinking a warm glass of Spumoni, of course there is a moment of disconnect as your brain is trying to understand the taste, temperature, and texture…it is really fun. The mouthfeel is smooth and creamy, a little oily from the coconut, but luckily the coconut is light enough that it is not super oily, just a lightness coating the mouth. The taste starts out with coconut and pistachio, nutty and gently sweet, it then moves on to a blend of cocoa and cherry, both rich and sweet. There is a nutty aftertaste that lingers for a bit, overall this tea is mild, not a kick in the face, gentle sweetness and flavors that blend really well.

drank Earl of Time by A Quarter to Tea
871 tasting notes

I was super excited to get my Quater to Tea samples in the mail yesterday when I got home from work.

As everyone in my life knows, I am a slave to the Earl, so this is the first one I had to try.

The dry tea is small, broken pieces of black tea but there are some currants in it, even for the small sample that I received. There is enough in the sample package for two servings of tea.

The dry tea smells very strongly of artificial cherry candy flavour. Similar to black cherry nibs. The brewed tea does not smell artificial. It is a sweet black currant smell.

This is one of those teas that has a magic timeframe in which to drink it. It is not that it is finicky. But there is very little taste when it is really hot, there is a great taste for that moment it cools a bit, then once it starts to cool a lot it morphs into a bit of artificial tasting. It is also a little metallic tasting as it cools with a bit of an astringent tang. It loses the bergamot flavour and the currant flavour profile be comes quite strong.

While this tea is in its magic moment, there are sweet black and red currant flavours. The bergamot almost tastes like candy. The bergamot and currant flavours blend well together. This blend is quite sweet on its own. The black tea base is moderately bold. It hides underneath the currant flavours. It is smooth and the liquor feels thick. There is initially no bitterness or astringency.

This one is definitely not a traditional Earl Grey as I would say the currant flavours are the dominant flavour. It is still pretty good though. This would probably be a good tea for those bergamot-haters out there (cough, cough…Sil).

Thanks to A Quarter to Tea for the free samples.

Sipdown (123)!

Last of my teas from A Quarter to Tea… For now (more on the way, already).

This was 100% the best sample from my first set; I’ll be interested to see if I can find one in this upcoming larger set that tops it. I have high hopes for a few, and am keeping an open mind for the others. This cup wasn’t nearly as magical and sparkly as the first; but that’s absolutely because I used most of the leaf with my first cup (it was a larger mug) so this one was underleafed. That just meant the cherry wasn’t as intense though – and actually because of that I think I tasted the coffee notes and Hojicha more which wasn’t really a bad thing either. But…

As someone who likes cherry over coffee I’ll take normal amount of leaf over underleafed tea any day. This is good too, though. Bumping my rating up since I rated conservatively the first time around since I wasn’t sure if I was just excited because it was new.

My samples from A Quarter to Tea came today! And I just couldn’t wait to dig into them!

That said, getting into the tea itself this smells AMAZING. I was totally expecting more of a coffee/chocolate with a subtle cherry because most blends that attempt to do cherry blends in which the cherry isn’t the sole flavour never really nail it. Instead, the smell is indicating this will be the opposite: cherry tea with more subtle coffee and chocolate. I am SO on board with that idea!

And I am so gleeful right now because the taste of the infused tea IS very strongly cherry! And it’s not some kind of gross cough syrup cherry either! Instead it’s sweet, dark cherry. So yummy and indulgent! Of course, there’s more going on here aside from the cherry even if that is the element of the tea which I’m most excited about. The chocolate notes come through well too and the pairing is a match made in heaven. However, it’s a little thin and I think that’s probably because this blend uses chocolate chips. If I could make one suggestion it’d be to use either cocoa nibs or shells instead. I think that’d kick the chocolate factor up a lot and also make the mouthfeel a little cleaner. Finally, the “coffee”. Personally I think this is the mildest element of the blend but I’m more that ok with that. As much as I don’t hate coffee and am cool with the flavour being in my tea I still prefer the tea itself to be the most dominant flavour. On that note I definitely taste the hojicha more than the oolong. I really love the idea of pairing the hojicha with the oolong as well; it ups the roasty notes up quite a bit and adds a whole new layer of flavour into the tea.

This tea is absolutely phenomenal! I’m very impressed, and I really look forward to trying the rest of my samples from Lauren. As far as first impressions go, this was a really good one.

tea-sipper

Shells WOULD really improve this awesome blend!

Lauren | A Quarter to Tea

I’m totally on board with the cacao idea!

tea-sipper

Cacao shells are my favorite ingredient to make a tea chocolatey. :D

rosebudmelissa

I’ve actually found through my own experimentation that a mix of shells, nibs, and just a bit of roasted barley gives the best chocolate flavor. It’s richer and more robust than just shells on their own.

Oh yeah this one is good! It’s pumpkiny, a little spice, maple syrup, over a creamy black tea. It tastes like a moist pumpkin pancake!

Ugh, would y’all STOP posting these amazing-sounding tasting notes for A Quarter to Tea??? I’m determined not to buy more tea until the Black Friday sales, but I am SO tempted to try this company out right now!

Oolong Owl

A couple of us tea bloggers got a 10% off coupon for A Quarter to Tea if that lessens the blow.

Also, I love Little Orange Tea Owl’s costume!

Yum, this tea has a good balance of blended flavor and tea base – the apple, nuts and spices don’t drown out the nilgiri black tea base. The tea is lightly spiced and has a tasty apple flavor.

I really wanted to love this one, it just sounded so good… and am wondering if maybe my sample just wasn’t enough for my mug… but even brewing it for a while I wasn’t getting a lot of taste… that hasn’t been an issue with anything else I’ve tried from QTT, so I’m hoping this was a fluke, so am refraining from rating this one.

Lauren | A Quarter to Tea

Bummer :( I included another sample of this with your most recent order, so hopefully second time is the charm here!

I’ll make sure to brew it in a smaller cup next time ^^ I am optimistic!

Additional notes:  Really solid consistent four steeps with 2 1/2 teaspoons (making sure to include an entire cherry in the infuser).  Why is this still so lovely?  Coffee, cherry, roasty.  ….I feel like I’ve written something along these longs before.  One of the handful I was able to try from Quarter to Tea but I MISS THEM.

Additional notes:  Nothing to do for my crappy mood today but get tea spoiled.  Having some delectable favorites today:  52Teas – Berried Treasure, B&B’s Rice Moolong and this one.  I think I’ll be revisiting some very favorites in the coming weeks while also trying some new-to-me teas. I’m savoring this tea once in a while because not only is it discontinued but the flavor is still amazing.  Sure, it’s not as good as it was when fresh, but that tea magic doesn’t exist yet, of keeping teas fresh through any amount of time.  The hugest dried cherry I’ve ever seen went into the infuser. It was much bigger than a teaspoon.  This is a tea where the parceling of ingredients must be very careful. Otherwise you get all these cherries in the infuser!  CHERRYCHOCOLATE. COFFEE. Perfect blend. Perfect for today.

I also finished organizing my teas that I’ve been doing slowly over time.  That was fun.  What’s next? A calming yet haunting song for today: Ed Harcourt – The World is On Fire https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Xlo9aQFUlyo

I think this might be the very first tea I ever had from AQ2T…

tea-sipper

Mine too! I didn’t get to try nearly enough of AQ2T teas, sadly.

ashmanra

I can’t believe they are gone! So many tea companies gone since I started drinking tea.

Kittenna

I was never a big fan of this one, but the other two you mentioned – soooo good.

Also still quite sad about AQ2T and Butiki – they both had a fairly high number of incredibly unique, memorable, delicious teas that I don’t think anyone will recreate. I desperately hope AQ2T comes back at some point in the future!

Martin Bednář

It’s always sad to see any, even small (thus worse), companies to close down. Some blends looks really tasty. But new ones will rise! As for example – Bird and Blend. I think they have quite nice chance to be in spotlight too.

Never had anything from AQ2T :/

Additional notes: Thanks for this one, JakeB! Sadly, this one is missing a lot of flavor from the blend I have in stock now… I’m not sure if it’s because it’s a different batch of the blend, stored in the paper packaging too long, or I didn’t get a nice enough mix in the teaspoons, even though I was trying. I only saw two coffee beans floating at the top of the mug, not much chocolate and I didn’t see any cherry pieces, when I saw a whole half a cherry in my first sample. AND I experimented with three teaspoons. But this steep session, it was mostly tasting like the roasted oolong. The best steep session I ever had with this one was with the first sample I ever received from AQTT. That’s a shame as this was my favorite blend that time.

Additional notes: Yes, I’m sipping this one again so soon after my sample (well, having the same tea in the same month is very soon for me, anyway!) I must have had the perfect mix of ingredients in my sample last time, as well as the perfect steep parameters. This time it wasn’t as magical. I tried to mix up the pouch to get a good sample of ingredients, but I don’t think that happened. I tried to follow how I steeped it the last time too, other than only using two teaspoons rather than 2 1/2. I really don’t want to use that many teaspoons every time. But next time I will to see if the magic comes back with 2 1/2 teaspoons. Still love it though!

This one is especially inspired —had to try it! (I could say that about most of A Quarter To Tea’s blends though!) THIS IS THE BEST CHOCOLATE CHERRY TEA!! No contest – this puts all other cherry teas to shame. The cherry tastes identical to the cherry in chocolate covered cherries, even though actual cherries weren’t overflowing from my brew basket – I didn’t notice them. But the best cherry flavor (nothing fake or cough syrupy about this) fills all three steeps of this tea. I’d say cherry is the dominant flavor with wisps of milk chocolate and coffee. So decadent and divine. The tea bases are perfect as well. You’ve got a great blend of a dark wiry oolong mixed with hojicha green tea, fresh coffee beans, dried cherries, chocolate chips and chicory. Amazing. I’m a little sad I used all of my sample up for a full mug (2 1/2 teaspoons) but it’s perfect. I wish I could have this tea exactly like this every time. If you are looking for a cherry tea, you have to try this! This one is definitely Butikiesque. :D

How much of the oolong do you get to taste?
