So what do you get when you desperately need the caffeine of a Yerba Mate/Guayusa but have extreme indecision about what you want to drink? A bad idea, that’s what.
The other night I mixed 1g of every single Mate/Guayusa tea on the wall and steeped that up to drink. I definitely do not recommend doing it – but here are the results…
- Strongly fruity; lots of the berry flavours & orange
- From Power Berry and Main Squeeze, respectively
- Sour/sweet finish
- Really earthy
- Coffee notes from Jumpy Monkey were REALLY strong and deeply clashed
- And the nuttyness from several of the teas also popped up throughout
It definitely could have tasted a million times worse – but again, it wasn’t good either. Certainly helped on a caffeine level, though…
Friendly reminder that I’m not currently numerically rating DAVIDsTEA blends as I’m currently seasonally employed there and it would be an obvious conflict of interest. Any blends you see with numerical ratings were rated prior to my employment there. These reviews are a reflection of my personal thoughts regarding the teas, and not the company’s.
Double sipdown time! I’ve reached my goal of 8 for Easter weekend!
I used about 3 tsp of Forever Nuts and 2.5 tsp of Big Apple, brewed with my uber-big teapot of 45oz. I didn’t boil enough to fill the teapot all the way, but I guess there was at least 40oz by the end. Steeped at 85C for 5-6 minutes. I know that the Forever Nuts blend requires a higher temperature, but I didn’t want to burn the green and white teas in the Big Apple sample. I also added a dollop of cinnamon honey to round it out.
Brewed, I’m getting a lot of flavours, but nothing in particular is winning out except possibly the green tea. I let one cup of this cool and it’s surprisingly good cold, with more of the fruit and cinnamon flavours coming out. But I have to admit that this isn’t the blend for me – especially considering that Big Apple is going to be discontinued soon.
Thanks again to Aimee Popovacki for giving me a sample of Big Apple to try! I’m glad I got to give it a nice sendoff.
Yeah, so they’re selling this in the store now as a big idea, so since I’m working on sipdowns and I had a bit of Big Apple and a smidgen of Forever Nuts left, I decided to give it a go this afternoon.
It’s supposed to taste like apple pie.
It tasted like apple cinnamon, but for me there was something very important missing – the pastry note.
It was perfectly fine as an apple cinnamon tea, I couldn’t really taste any white tea from the Big Apple in it.
Ultimately I’m realizing I’m not the hugest fan of herbals, and that’s what this seemed like to me. I also noticed a film in my cup which I suspect came from Forever Nuts, a tea I used to love when I first came into this world (the world of tea, I mean), but now was just happy to sip down.
Davidstea is very much “Meh” to me lately. I think I have to sell off a bunch of my stash. I have so many.

Ok, I’m re-rating this and moving it downwards. It is far too easy to oversteep this tea and get a bitter, cloying mess.
I had a huge tin of this that I whittled down over the weekend while visiting my in-laws. I don’t know what it is about this blend (which I mixed myself from the peppermint and spearmint that I had in my cupboard), but this blend just doesn’t work. It smells nice, but the taste is really chemically and not that minty at all.
Anyways, I drank enough of this over the weekend that it’s now approaching sipdown status. When I empty the tin, my remaining spearmint (which I like a lot more) will go in, and my cupboard will be a place of happiness and light.
The past few times I brewed this, I thought it tasted really sharp and harsh – almost heartburn inducing. This made me want to toss the whole mix out, since I still have a whole bunch of the two unblended varieties of mint, and I thought the harshness came from mixing them together.
Then I checked the label for each type of mint and realized I’d been oversteeping by at least TWICE the recommended length of time. >_<
So I’ve learned my lesson: try and keep it to a minute, tops. This time it’s been much better, though I did make sure to add a spoonful of honey.

I had tried to mix Peppermint Amour with Pure Chai a few days ago and I thought it was really interesting. Now this… this is amazing ! The peppermint was a bit overpowering but the spearmint is just perfect. I put one tsp of each and I can taste as much spicy chai as mint. Perfect balance and perfect combination, I love it ! Everything’s better with mint (well, almost everything…)
I’m actually thinking about buying more Pure Chai even though I don’t enjoy it that much just to be able to make more of this blend. Wow.
I love peppermint and chai and I’ve recently read the description of a chai tea with some mint in it, so I decided to mix those 2 teas from David’s Tea together and see.
I love it ! It’s very nice. Spicy and comforting, just perfect on this very cold afternoon. I put 1 tsp of each, but next time I’ll try with a little less peppermint as it can be overpowering and I don’t taste Pure Chai as much as I would like in it. I might also try it with Spearmint instead of Peppermint next time, we’ll see.
Just tried this blend, as the peppermint is one of my favourites and the spearmint, while it smells lovely, leaves an earthy “grass” taste in my mouth, which I don’t like. Steeped the combination for 4-5 minutes and it still tasted a bit off. Added 1 packet of sugar and its delicious!
Right so late night teatime results in Owlies Tea Alchemy! I’ve been experimenting, and finally put one of my concoctions down. The autumn teas have inspired me this year and they all blend so well together…
So i hated up a mug of milk and got ready. Sidenote, I’m going through this phase where I don’t use water at all, I just steep directly into hot milk. As such, my taste might be slightly different than yours. Anyway. Half a spoon of Forever Nuts went in, plus a heaping full spoon of Sugar and Spice. What I didn’t want was it to turn out too sweet and nutty, what I wanted was the Sugar and Spice to be prominent. And I think I got that here. Turned the milk a lovely shade of light pink, though if you’re using water I imagine it’ll be more of a maroon/amber.
The spice is definitely the dominant one here, and the milk brings out the sweetness in it more, which blends well with Nuts. This owl is even detecting hints of apple cinnamon… hmm…. Perhaps a second steep of this is in order, perhaps with some Moms Apple Pie…
This tea… it just feels right.
I’ve actually been scheming to blend these two teas for a while now, but for some reason the Toasted Marshmallow triggered something in my pregnant nose/taste-buds that made me abandon it after the first cup. However, when mixed with Cookie Dough both teas compliment each other perfectly! Like drinking liquid s’mores or macadamia nut cookies. And made as a latte? I’ve died and gone to tea heaven…
Sidenote: My 23-month-old likes this latte just as much as I do, good thing I made double so we can share.
This is one that I ordered with my first order and mostly because I like the name and thought hmm thats what I need! (big sucker for cute marketing!) any hoo! the taste well I wish it was a fruity but it was kinda minty and vix vapor rub kinda taste lol (no I have never ate vix vapor rub) its very tollerable tho. I should have not drank it so early! I didnt wanna do anything! lol def going to be a once in awile tea!
Courtney sent me a bit of each of these, and I couldn’t decide which one I wanted more last night… so I mixed a little bit of spearmint in with the peppermint. It was amazing and delicious and soothing and I am a big fan.
I put some in the fridge, too, because I love mint water. Gah. I will be drinking this frequently.
I don’t know why I’m so hesitant to mix teas, like I’m gonna blow something up if it goes wrong. At worst it will taste terrible and I’ll have to toss it. Which I suppose is almost as bad.
So today I took the plunge. And it turned out really yummy! I used 2/3 milk oolong and 1/3 vanilla orchid, and it had the best of both worlds; rich and creamy with a hint of vanilla sweetness. Kinda like eating a spoonful of whipped cream from a cake. Mmm, whipped cream. I think I’ll have another s̶c̶o̶o̶p̶ cup!
It’s miserable outside and I don’t feel like leaving my apartment. So I made myself a piña colada… kind of. With tea instead of rum.
GAH. SO GOOD.
EDIT: I’m still drinking this. For the third steep, I added about a half-teaspoon of Buttered Rum. And now I am debating pouring in some vanilla vodka, hahahaha!
