My first Georgie Tea Company order came today! ::happy dance:: The poor priority mail box it came in looked like a tea goblin had decided to use it as a chair (it’s the first time that I’ve ever seen “Received in bad condition” stamped all around the address). No worries though — all my precious, precious tea is absolutely fine and arrived within 4 days of my order. I opened the box, dug through it until I found my Earl Grey Cream, and then I hugged the bag. I think I have a problem. Oh, and Daniel put a nice handwritten “thank you” to me on the invoice. It’s simple touches like that that make me an even happier customer.
With this order I also hit a milestone that I thought would take years and years to reach. Let me back up for a moment. When I first started reading notes on Steepster there were times that I would come across the mention of “lockdowns” because of too much tea or people just mentioning that they have waaaay too much tea. That was such a foreign concept to me and I thought That’s nigh impossible! Yeah, I’m there. It’s both a wonderful thing and a slightly terrifying thing that it happened so fast. I have plans to help lower the amount of tea I have (beyond the obvious one of me drinking it all), but wowsa. I almost feel like Scrooge McDuck at the beginning of Duck Tales where he’s diving through his big vault-o-gold (except I’m swimming through tea)! Next purchase? Some tea tins to decorate and make all of my samples/bagged teas safer/prettier.
On to this specific tea! I opted to try my sample of Irish Breakfast as a palate cleanser from the Orange Dulce I had earlier. I’ve had quite a few of GTC’s yummy flavored teas, but none of the straight-up black teas. I was also wanting a caffeine kick.
There’s very little info on GTC’s website about this tea, so I’ll give it a go:

I’m having trouble figuring out the rest of the blend. It’s been long enough where my “try Assam, Keemun, and Ceylon side-by-side taste test” is starting to fade in my memory so my ability to figure out the more subtle hints of those specific teas is weakening. On the first steep this came across as very earthy — almost Pu Erh-levels of earthiness. So perhaps there’s some Keemun? Second steep (added a minute) has lots of sweetness coming through and I’m thoroughly enjoying it. It’s a great option for a non-smoky morning-booster for me. NE

This is VERY good. It tastes just like it should…blackberries! It smells lovely! It’s juicy and very berry without being tart or fake/chemical tasting!

I think Rabs bought a sample of this tea, and I was pretty sure she wasn’t going to like it, so I also sent her a free sample of a Sleepy Time to compensate.

Don’t worry about the reviews. AmazonV is killing me!! haha kidding. The thing about owning a tea company is having variety. I can admit there are many teas I have that I would never personally drink, some like Stress Reliever that I can’t even stand to bag but you never know when you’ll have a customer who loves medicinal herbal-y teas and will just LOVE it. I personally hate Black Currant, then I have customers who ONLY buy my Black Currant telling me it’s the best they’ve had. I think experimenting to find what we like and what we don’t like is half the fun of drinking gourmet tea. The average person goes threw their life eating many different types of food and yet we tend to stick to only a few types of drinks. It’s nice when entering the world of tea to know that there are over 30,000 different types of tea and you could have a different one for every different meal you eat! I love the reviews, they are honest and I take them all to heart.

This is sweet and floral and herbal and citrusy and almost plant-like but in a good way.

This doesn’t have a very strong aroma but it ‘brews’ dark! This is a medium to medium-strong black tea that is a great go-to black tea for any time of day! A great addition to any black tea lovers cabinet!

Tea is best stored in tins which are not clear and air tight, since light activates the steeping process and moisture as well. The sample bags I received were about 2-3 cups each, where purchased samples are larger.

Now I get an aftertaste of dried pineapple snacks
I am not in love with this cup, sadly I now expect teas to dance and sing before I wow them, but I am enjoying it, and can hear the beach lapping in the back of my mind with a nice cool breeze.

I didn’t expect it to resteep well, as it was a rooibos, it surprised me by being a nice vanilla woody tea on the second, although a very long, steep.

At 3 minutes it was weak, I left it sit and lost track of how much longer it sat, but it finally reached a good medium bodied strength. I added 1 packet of white sugar and it was a less intense cinnamon black tea than the first steep.
I did not try for a third steep as I wanted to try something new.

I find the labels on the tea samples to be perfect, they include the company name, tea name, tea type, and steeping directions. They are in clear ziplock bags so don’t buy them and expect to keep them around for a long time, teas should be stored in tins (air tight and no light) for long term storage.
So far the only flaw I have found thus far is no clear list of ingredients.
I could smell this one strongly when I opened the box, and since I love cinnamon I decided to make this my first sample to try, and had it at work with my lunch.
This is a down and dirty test, hot spigot water from the water fountain, steeping time using online timers, measuring spoon that is a plastic lunch spoon. For all the abuse the tea turned out well. I think nex time I will add a touch of sweetener and cream after a few more sips to tamper the astringency.
It can’t compare to my love of Harney & Sons cinnamon black, but for those less sugar and candy inclined (did you think H&S was too sweet?) this would be the cinnamon tea for you.

Good comment about the label. Last week I went to a new tea shop and when I got home I realized the bag only included the tea name – no shop info and no description. We need that information when we add the tea to our cupboard.

For for two cup sample bags, I’m not too worried, just store them in a cupboard and that will keep the light off of them. :)
@Dan I’m not worried at all, they’re going to be gone quick quick! I’ll make sure to do an update that ones you purchase aren’t in clear baggies on my blog, thanks for letting me know (i honestly don’t mind, i have boxes for baggies)

Thanks AmazonV! One of the biggest challenges I’m facing is the production costs of labels. The labels I use now I print myself to save money. I buy the labels from Staples but I have to print custom labels everytime I get an order. The teashop I use to work for years ago, had custom labels produced through a company by the thousands and I guess it worked out nice, but it was a generic label and they still had to print a special sticker for every different kind of tea. And when you have over 115 teas, having multiply labels on each bag on each different type of tea gets costly real quick. I hope to figure out a way to include the ingredients on the bag too somehow, but for the meantime I guess people can look at the web site for ingredients. As far as this tea goes, a lot of the flavored black teas don’t have ingredient listings because they are what they say they are. This tea just has a plain black tea from china and cinnamon pieces.
I’m an ingredients nuts because I have so many friends with allergies / vegan / whatever – for me i just want it on the website (pst the cinnamon black doesn’t have black tea, cinnamon pieces listed) – sort of like if you get the mini fun sized candies they say go to website for nutritional info
the problem is when things not mentioned in the title hide in there (for example the necessiteas i think has mint in the root beer tea – and no way you could know that until you drink some)
I wasn’t too worried about allergies, since if your allergic to black tea or cinnamon, it’s quite obvious you shouldn’t drink a black tea with cinnamon in it. The description on my web site says, “A black tea with cinnamon flavoring.” But I will add that it’s not just ‘cinnamon flavoring’ but also that it contains, ‘cinnamon pieces.’ It’s so funny, years ago a lady came in my teashop and asked what the ingredients of one of my blends was, and I told her, “Rooibos, jasmine green tea and silver needle white tea.” and she said, “No, I want the INGREDIENTS. It’s so irresponsible of you not to list the ingredients of this tea!.” She started yelling at me, I thought I was going to have to ask her to leave. What she didn’t understand was, those ARE the ingredients. Rooibos is an herb from south africa, the green tea is just green tea leaves with jasmine on it and the silver needle is a white tea, there is nothing else to list, but she just couldn’t get past it, like I was leaving something mysterious how. Heh. But if there is everything anything in a tea, I will also list it in case someone has an allergy to it, especially nuts or dairy products.
I will continue to modify the descriptions of the teas on the web site to be more specific. I know on the herbal teas I’m very specific as to what’s in them, like Cold Chaser I list, “Ingredients: elderflowers, lime-tree blossoms, thyme, aniseed, fennel, rose hip peels, liquorice root, blackberry leaves, wild thyme, marigold blossoms.”
But typically on the flavored black teas, it’s understood that ‘Cinnamon Black’ contains cinnamon and black tea, or Pineapple Black contains pineapple pieces and black tea. But I will look over all my descriptions again so there is no confusion. Thanks again for the review!

Sorry to be fussy but you’d be surprised at the difference between real cinnamon and artificial cinnamon flavoring (per allergies) luckily I’m merely allergic to lactose and red dye #40 so not too bad at all!
I completely understand. My wife has a celery allergy. Can you believe that? I’ve never of anyone being allergic to celery. Heh. But just so you know, tea flavorings are not artificial. They come from essential tea oils used specifically for flavoring loose tea. Did you know that the flavor of your ‘flavored’ teas rarely ever comes from what you see. Take a Pineapple Black tea for instance. Although you see big chunks of pineapples in the tea, the pineapple flavor you taste and smell comes from specially made tea oil extracts which are used in flavoring tea. The reason this must be done is, if you simply threw some dried pineapple pieces in a pound of black tea, you simply wouldn’t taste it. There isn’t enough flavor in these pineapple pieces and for the amount of time that tea is steeped, there simply isn’t enough time to pull out any significant flavor from the dried fruits. They are for looks so that people will think the flavor is coming from them. The extracts are Pure and are almost always organic. They are not sweetened either. The tea oils are very potent and it only takes two drops to flavor 8 oz of tea. After the oils are sprayed and mixed into the tea, they are sealed for at least 24 hours and allowed to dry before packaging in bulk to sell to retail tea companies. So the next time you look in an Apple or Vanilla tea and see pieces of apple or vanilla and they taste like apple or vanilla, just remember, the flavor comes from essential oils! :)
I’ve been cold brewing this for well over 24 hours. I used up the last of the sample Daniel Mann sent me and used a scoop from the sample that Jessica sent me: woohoo!
It’s quite pleasant iced. I usually don’t remark on the color of the liquid tea — I generally appreciate it, but I have a limited color vocabulary (my reviews would contain a lot of “brownish” and “light brownish” descriptors if I tried). That said I have to remark that this looks like lemonade. I can’t recall a more yellow cup. It still comes across as a fruit-tea cocktail. Maybe more on the tea side. I’m having trouble even sort of describing this (sorry!). There’s a teeny-tiny bit of plant-like bitterness. I’m thinking that this is another tea that would benefit by being a hot brewed iced tea. I have both Daniel Mann and Jessica to thank for samples of this. Due to Jessica’s generosity I will be able to try this as a cold-brewed iced tea and that prospect quite excites me.
I hadn’t looked up this tea prior to drinking it, but I could tell that it was quite a mixture of both teas and fruit both visually and fragrance-wise. Little did I know how extensive the ingredient list was — it’s very very extensive. I’m quite impressed with how well Georgia Tea Company pulls this off. With that many ingredients I would think that this tea would be a trainwreck. But it’s not. The different teas blend up into a very unique taste. I can’t really pick out the individual fruits — it’s more like a liquid fruit salad. It reminds me of something, but for the life of me I can’t figure out what it is. Overall it’s quite refreshing.
I’m thinking that if no other tea company has coined this term, then GTC should market some of these teas (like this and Pomegranate Fruit) as “confettea.” I’m still leaning toward the Cancer Fighting Lavendar tea as my “confettea” of choice, but I’m quite curious to see how this tea’s taste will morph as a cold brew. Iced – This tea makes an excellent iced tea. I’ve tried many different teas as iced tea over the last month and I had started to think that I just hated any iced tea but plain black. This tea is better than plain black. It’s yummy. I don’t get blackberry from it when it’s iced though… strangely it tastes like blueberry tea when iced. I don’t mind that at all. I think I am definitely going to order some of this one for summer.
Also, I cold brewed this forever because I just kept not getting around to straining it. We’ve had a high of 45 here this weekend, so iced tea was not on my mind. I think this cold brewed for at least a day and a half. It still tasted great.
Preparation
I’m not sure why I’ve waited so long to taste this one because it’s pretty good. The smell of the leaves is grape jelly. Once brewed, the smell is of black tea with a little berry fruitiness. The taste is yummy… a nice mellow black tea followed by the grape jelly flavor and then… wait for it… ah, there… the blackberry. You’ll definitely want a little sweetener in here, but of course you’d sweeten your blackberries too, right?
I think this will make a great iced tea and I’ve got a glass of it cold brewing in the fridge (with bottled water this time – in case you didn’t see it the other day, our water is contaminated due to local flooding and lots of cows).

Our house is luckily at least 3 blocks from the river that’s flooding (too much snow melt, too fast) so we are dry. Just the city water is bad. They think a pipe got damaged somewhere. Should be better any day now… water smells like bleach at the moment.

I can’t believe they damaged the box and then stamped it with “Received in bad condition.” What does that even mean? It was in perfect condition when I handed it to the post lady! Good thing it wasn’t a glass teapot or anything…
they stamp it at the received post office, so if post office a gets it OK, then passes it to post off B which stomps it, post office C stamps it when it arrives, and re-tapes or bags as needed.
i get that a lot at my home, the people at my post office must be a lot of brutes!

Ahh, thanks for clearing that up for me. I thought they were trying to say I gave it to them damaged. I wouldn’t want people to think I send damaged packages out, ya know?
This is a Irish Breakfast Xtra Fancy, that’s about all I know about it. It’s one of the more expensive Irish Breakfast’s that I’ve found. I tend to lean toward the higher grades of teas…
@Daniel: To add to your relief — I never once thought that you had sent out a smooshed package. I figured that it was indicating what AmazonV said. It just looks like a smaller, heavier box was placed on top and sort of smooshed one of the sides a bit. If I had thought you’d sent it smooshed, then believe me — I would’ve sent you a PM :)
Yah, that makes sense. It would seem pretty crazy for a company to send out a damaged package, that is, if they were trying to keep customers heh.
