I haven’t felt much like drinking tea lately, and even less like writing about it. My dog of 14 years passed away over the weekend and the days leading up to it were pretty tough. I’m trying to hold it together so my kids don’t see me lose it completely, but whenever I have a moment to myself I’m a mess. But I need to return to my new normal and get back to some of the things that make me happy. Two of which are tea and steepster.

So I made this one today as it will last over and over so I didn’t have to think about what tea to have next. I saw Bonnie say to add cream and sugar in someone else’s comment so I gave it a try. I steeped it for 5 or so and added the cream and sugar and it was like drinking caramel. I had that over and over today. This is a really yummy tea, especially doctored just a bit.

Kittenna

I’m so sorry to hear about you dog :( Hopefully you can take some comfort in returning to old routines (e.g. tea/Steepster).

OMGsrsly

Oh, I’m so sorry to hear about your dog.

Kaylee

Condolences on the death of your dog. I hope the memory of the many wonderful years you had together will help carry you through this sad time.

tigress_al

Sorry for your loss. Dogs are pretty special animals

Nxtdoor

I’m so sorry for your loss.

K S

I don’t know how old your kids are but I am sure they are mourning as well. Hang on to the memories and each other.

Fuzzy_Peachkin

Sorry about your canine friend passing! Pets are very precious.

ashmanra

I am so sorry! It breaks our hearts because they fill our hearts so much.

greenteafairy

I’m so sorry to hear this.

tea-sipper

I am so sorry to hear you lost your dog!

Nicole

Aw… that’s hard. Sorry to hear.

ifjuly

This is really late to the party (I just tried this for the first time tonight). I am sorry to hear about your dog.

That is really good to know someone as experienced as Bonnie says it’s ok to put milk and sugar in a pu erh—I was thinking for some reason pu erh would be one of those tea types people think should never be adulterated, but this is so INTENSE I’ve been thinking some milk would help. I mean I know I can do whatever I want really, but still, it’s reassuring.

I made an unflavored puerh that I didn’t want to dump down the drain! I know, I’m a very unsophisticated tea drinker, but hey, I’m growing!

I didn’t taste the chocolate that everyone raves about, but I did enjoy the flavor, kind of. It doesn’t have the fish food/barn/ammonia flavor that I seems to alway accompany puerh. It has more of a forest-y/earthy flavor, but not offensive at all. I think have had 3 8oz steeps so far and I’m sure there are many more to go, but I’m taking a break for now.

Overall, I’m definitely glad I got this and maybe this will be my gateway puerh that finally gets me to cross the threshold to puerh lover. I’m not sure. But I have 1oz to play with.

Oh yeah, and my tea came crazy fast. I think within two days of ordering. And Garret gave me 2 large samples of other teas that I can’t wait to try. And the always nice touch of a handwritten note. I am incredibly impressed with this tea company.

Dexter

I have some of this and I’m waiting for a special day to enjoy it. Love the other Mandala Pu’erhs that I’ve tried and I’m sure I will love this one too.
Happy that you’ve discovered a pu’erh that you didn’t need to dump!! It grows on you quickly. :)) Garret and Mandala are awesome.

Garret

Awww… shucks…. I think I just blushed :) You are all the very best, for sure! This tea is getting very very popular here in our shop and so I am very happy to hear that you are liking it!! Can’t wait to hear more about your pu’er journey, my friend! Tea rocks!!

I decided to try the ‘Dark Beauty’ combo again this afternoon, MsPriss’ special recipe. It really is yummy! Bold, thick, sweet, a perfect mix!

I got a lot done today! I still have to pack, & I just realized I still haven’t braided the garlic yet…lol. Oh well, I’ll pack first cuz Tony is picking me up in an hour, & I guess if I don’t get the garlic braided it will be ok. I’m only gonna 5 days, after all.

The hardest decision: What teas to take…

MzPriss

Woooo! I’m so glad you like it

MzPriss

Laoshan Black Chocolate Genmaicha and Golden Orchid and Special Dark

TheTeaFairy

Have safe trip terri :-)

(And I will try this this Prissy cocktail someday!! )

I second MzPriss suggestion but you are missing a strong bad ass Black, like Tiger Assam maybe?

MzPriss

LTF – do you have any Black Beauty?

TheTeaFairy

Lol, i had some before I found out about that cocktail of yours…and I keep forgetting to order it!!

MzPriss

I will put some in your package

TheTeaFairy

(MzPriss, You did not answer me about SB)

MzPriss

(oh – I think very close to the time it would get here from Oh Canada, it should b time for Brendenol to have some for me)

TheTeaFairy

(Lol, yeah, damn borders..)

OMGsrsly

Have a great trip!

apt

green oolong, roasted oolong, black tea

Garret

We pounded out a huge pot of the blend here at the shop with a customer the other day. It was pretty special. Not just for energy, but flavor. I was able to pound through a whole lotta bagging of the tea after that Dark Beauty session!

I’m trying MzPriss’ combo of this tea, steeped with Black Beauty, following her suggestions of (1T Special Dark + 8oz water X 3min) + a big pinch of Black Beauty X 3 more minutes.

It’s potent!

MzPriss

It is – did you like it?

MzPriss

OMG Terri – I do that in SIXTEEN oz of water I am so sorry – I make it in my big mug – did I put 8 on my post? * spanks self * Very sorry :(

MzPriss

Did it curl your eyelashes up tight?

Dexter

(Do I have Black Beauty in the house? – I HAVE to try this….)

Terri HarpLady

Hahaha…I probably just assumed it was 8oz…actually my cup is more like 10, but still…
The resteep was still pretty potent, but you know what? They were both drinkable, & all in all, it was definitely a wake up call for the afternoon!
LOL

Spencer

Oh my…this sounds delicious. (And I would totally use 8oz.)
So, shall this special blend be called “Darker Than Black?”

Garret

Special Beauty, perhaps?

Laughing as I read this thinking about two things: 1) MzPriss spanking herself and 2) how much faster my 5k race times would be if I drank 8 ounces of this about 20 minutes prior!

And being that life is one big experiment, I’m just gonna have to try. Not try spanking myself, but rather drinking said concoction before race time.

You all crack me up!

MzPriss

Garret – I call it Dark Beauty. And it’s so fine! Two of my very favorite things in one cup of delicious comfort. Let me know what you think.

Garret

Waiting for the tea to finish brewing here in the shop. Doing your experiment with a brand new customer. Can’t wait to sip it. Will let you know!

Garret

We love it!!!!!!!!

Spencer

MzPriss, this might call for an official tea database entry for Dark Beauty!

Spencer

Along with instructions on how to brew it.

MzPriss

I can totally DO that – I have this most morning of my life because it makes my world a better place :)

Spencer

Yay! Link?

MzPriss

I haven’t done it yet – because I’m in the middle of a project – but I promise I will

Another full day working on my front porch rehab project. Tony came over to put rubber treads on my steps (so my harp dolly won’t tear up the paint), & I had to face some disappointment when I discovered that the 4 X 8 foot commercial runner I ordered won’t come for 4 – 6 weeks. Dammit. It’s the width of my front door, & just long overlap the top stair tread. Anyway, the latest pics are up on my FB, for anybody who would like to see my progress. I think it’s coming along nicely!
This was actually my last tea of the day. I was peeling off the blue painting tape, making note of touch ups I’ll have to do, & this was the perfect tea for the job! Comforting, grounding, bringing me back down to earth after spending a large portion of my day on a ladder, paintbrush in hand.

Christina / BooksandTea

I’m sure someone on Steepster has already said this, but I find it inherently awesome that you are a professional harpist. It’s just such a neat thing to be able to say!

MzPriss

I love this for last tea of the day – snuggly happy-place tea.

Sil

it IS coming along nicely my tea sister!

Terri HarpLady

Christina, thanks! It actually blows me away sometimes that I really get to make a living doing this!
Sil, Did you guys finish your project yet? I’ve sort of hardly been online, so if you post(ed) pics, let me know, or else I might miss them!

I had to have one more cup of something, & I decided on this! YEah!
Dark chocolate, earth, like the darkest semi-sweet fudge out there.
I went with:
1T + 8oz (actually I need to quit saying that. None of my cups are 8oz, more like 10 or 12) X 3min/5min

Yeah Baby!
We just had an awesome brunch, which I will probably blog about later: gluten free almond flour peach coffeecake (to die for), homemade sausage patties (I have mastered the art), & eggs.
I wanted something bold, & I got it!
I went for the full blown, “surrender to the dark side” 7 minute steep, & OMG, what a great contrast to the lightly sweet coffee cake, the tngy spicy sausage patties, & the buttery eggs! The sense of satisfaction I got from this cup reminds me of my old coffee drinking days: bold, rich, deep, dark (can a tea GET any darker?). It’s gourmet earthy chocolate with a hint of spice.
May the force be with you!

Oolong Owl

holy cow 7 minute steep!

Terri HarpLady

I just resteeped for another 7, & it was still a nice cup.
I’ve tried it with short steeps, a 5 min, & now 7. I enjoyed them all! :)

Bonnie

The tea judges steep long like this for all tea, then later…they might taste at a lighter strength. We’ve been doing this with new tea samples at Happy Luckys because the World Tea Expo classes taste that style. I personally like a longer steep around the third round too!

Garret

Yes! That’s what I’m talkin’ about!

This is delicious!
The first steep was a little light…hint of dark chocolate powder.
The 2nd steep was deeper, richer, like putting a pinch of gourmet dark chocolate powder on my tongue & swirling it around in my mouth. Almost a powdery sensation.
3rd steep adds a hint of sweet semolina.
4th steep is the one I’m drinking now, still nicely rich, with a mouth that reminds of condensed canned milk with cocoa powder stirred in. I’ve never actually had that, LOL, but that’s what it makes me think of.

I’ll continue sipping this for a few more rounds. It is a nice richly satisfying Shu, without any of the musty or ammonia-like smells, it has a certain earthiness to it, a deeply grounding sensation more than a taste. Next time I’ll probably give it the full on 3 minute treatment, as I’m one who tends to surrender to the dark side!

Dexter

I have some of this, and I’m dying to try it. Everyone who has tried it seems to agree that it’s wonderful. Glad to hear that you also are enjoying it. Need to find a day that I can spend some time and enjoy it properly.

graceatblb

The full 3 minute steep is something I need to try soon too. I am also tempted to bake with this. I may pop it into someone’s birthday cake as a surprise.

TastyBrew

I haven’t found a puerh I like yet, is this worth trying if I don’t seem to like the fish food barn flavor?

Terri HarpLady

Maybe? This one doesn’t have the marine & barn profile. Either that or my brain is starting to filter those flavors out! :)

ashmanra

Tastybrew: have you tried Chocolate Strawberry Puerh from Lupicia? It hardly tastes like Puerh at all.

Sil

cough i have a birthday in july..just saying grace lol
@tastybrew – i second ash’s comments on that one from lupicia! it’s delicious!

Terri HarpLady

This one is also in your box…

Sil

terri…yeah but the CAKE grace is going to make isn’t grin

graceatblb

Haha. We’ll have to see if the cake turns out well. My baking experiments usually end up either good or on fire.

Terri HarpLady

THAT should be interesting! :)

One of the things I like about Shengs is their ability to clear my head. Even though this one is “Sheng Lite”, it still has that ability. I just drank it the other day, but this is a new month & it is the first one on my Sheng list, going alphabetically (by brand).

I’m really enjoying it!

Login or sign up to leave a comment.

I was initially hesitant over buying this one. I’m not a huge white tea fan, but then I read Aweward Soul’s review of the ’12 version, & I immediately thought, “That sounds interesting”. Since I was placing a Mandala order anyway, I figured I might as well try a sample.

And I like it! It’s like Sheng Lite, in that it doesn’t have the bite that some Shengs have, if you know what I mean. It’s a milder version, but still very nice. There is a sweet crispness to it like fall fruits, a creaminess that comes after several steepings, & my tongue is thick with the resinous sensation.

So…to further educate myself on puerh, I’ve decided to try selecting a mountain(s) & drinking everything I have from that area. I’m not sure how long I’ll go with this, but I’ve started with Bulang. Last week I gathered all of my Bulang puerh into one box & sat it near my desk. I have 5 Shou & 1 Sheng. First up was 2008 Bulang Shan Imperial Grade from Crimson Lotus, very enjoyable. Then I went with the Spring Lae cha you from Bulang, which I got from White2Tea. Both of those were samples, and now they are gone. For the last couple of days I’ve been drinking this Bulang Gong Ting from Mandala, and I’ve tried it several ways now.
-1 T in my mug, 30/60/90 sec/2min/3min
-1 heaping tsp in my mug 30/45/60/2min (the suggested parameters on the package)
Today I’m going with 8G in my yixing: 10/20/30/40/50/60….
I’m combining two steeps at a time in my mug, & I just keep coming back for more.
It’s rich, clean, so satisfying with breakfast, awesome thick mouth: wood, earth, boston brown bread…

Sil

love this idea!

Terri HarpLady

:)
I don’t know if I’ll really learn anything, but I needed a strategy to work my way through the collection, so there it is!

Plunkybug

This is a great concept! Love it!

I’ve been having a gongfu session with this tea for the last couple of hours, & have come to the conclusion that I like this tea better just brewed in a cup…maybe…

Login or sign up to leave a comment.

This really is a nice Shu, pleasantly bold. It seems like a lot of the shus I try taste about the same…semolina, a little caramel, maybe a little earthiness. This one has all those as well, but there is more. It’s nicely bold, with an oak-like flavor, some woody aromatics, & even some chocolate. A nice cup to end the day with.

cryptickoi

gotta love a good Bu lang tea..

Somehow, I drank green & white teas almost all day. A couple of Dragonwells, some white, & before I knew it the day was nearly gone. I realized around 6:00 that I really wanted something else. I wanted a nice rich dark cup that was full of grounding qualities. I wanted a cup of Puerh! I didn’t want to sit around with a Gaiwan, doing multiple steeps & comparing sips. Sometimes I like to do that, but sometimes I just want a nice fully brewed cup. So that’s what I had.

I got this Gong Ting a few weeks ago in my Mandala order, but this is my first time drinking it. I steeped a heaping tsp in an 8oz or so cup for 3 minutes. Smooth, rich, mellow, earthy, a little sweet. I sat with that cup, sipping & savoring while listening to my final student of the day, & it was just what I wanted, just what I needed.

Sil

I totally just sent an email to Garret asking him to take pity on me and help me with some suggestions for a birthday order lol

graceatblb

Special Dark, Sil. Special Dark. I’m a bit obsessive :)

Sil

hahaha well i can’t place the order until July but i’m trying to sort out what i want to try ahead of time. That also means i need to try the other 2 you sent me!!!

Dexter

If I can put my two cents worth in. The Noble Mark is amazing (http://steepster.com/teas/mandala-tea/33934-noble-mark-ripe-puer-blend-2011). I would also trust Garret’s advice, I think next time I might just send him money and let him choose. The samples I get are usually right on the money to my tastes.

Sil

haha all recommendations welcome. I know i’ll be reading reviews etc but i’m a relative newbie in the puerh world so i figured i’d see what his thoughts were. :)

graceatblb

I’m sorta convinced that Garret has sample selecting superpowers. He added a sample in my birthday order that I had on my list to order but, for some reason, didn’t. I may let him just select my order the next time. May save me math stress and I know the teas will be great.

And I second the Noble Mark. In a big way.

Dexter

Me too, newbie to the world of pu’erh. Noble Mark is special, needs to be treated with respect, take your time savor it. Bu Lang Gong Ting, I wrote almost exactly what Terri is saying here. It’s great, but it’s more an everyday, easy tea. Pour some water over it and enjoy kind of tea.
(I also really really really liked the Mandala Tea Silver Buds Raw 2011 – totally different, equally amazing).
Phatty Cake and Special Dark are next on my to try list – I have them just haven’t tried them yet.

Terri HarpLady

Sil, I’m gonna send samples of all my puerhs to you, including the Noble Mark, the gong ting, the King of bulang, & a bunch others. That’s your birthday present from me, a rediculous collection of puerh samples. Do you want both shu & sheng, or just shu?

Sil

Terri….uh no idea! Lol and that’s awesome, thank you! I really haven’t tried much or what I I did try I had in china and have no idea what I was drinking lol

Terri HarpLady

You’ll get both then!
(Pulling out her scale & baggies, like a dope dealer from the 70’s)

TeaLady441

Hahaha Terri – I totally feel like a dope dealer when I’m making my little sample packs.:P

Bought this to share with my Dad for Father’s Day and I was not disappointed — Mandala delivers again! This is the same material used in their highly touted Phatty Cake (which I have yet to try).

This tea brews a beautiful deep brassy-red cup. The brew is exceptionally smooth, without any harsh leather, shellfish or inky notes and offers a unique clarity, devoid of murkiness, that I have not encountered in any other Pu-ehrs. This is an easy drinker for sure — my Father, who had literally never had a Pu-Ehr before, really (really!) enjoyed this tea. As I was showing him how to use his new gaiwan I heard him say under his breath “this is awesome”. The apple doesn’t fall too far from the tree!

I still consider myself relatively new to Shou Pu-ehrs, having only tasted roughly half a dozen or so, and really only being familiar with two, so for now I am going to withhold a rating. I will say that this is my favorite Pu-ehr I have had to date.

Garret

Thanks for writing about this, my friend!! I loved your review!! I also loved the pic you sent of your tea sesh with your Dad. So cool!! I just scored the very last of this leaf from the producer along with some grade 3 (slightly larger) leaf and did a blend. The new cakes of it are on their way from China as we speak!!! Can’t wait. It will be called “Phatty Cake 2: The Sequel” The leaf you just reviewed was the same tea that I used to press the original Phatty Cake, still our best selling pu’er tea in the history of our little company. You may want to try one of those cakes sometime before they are gone! Wishing you great joy! Grateful, Garret

I enjoyed several steepings of this during the afternoon. It’s a really yummy one, with the buttery sweetness of semolina, & an earthy base note that is soothing, like a walk in a cool autumn forest. The later steepings have a bit of a cooling effect.

This is a really tasty tea!
Once again, I’m not in the mood for fussing over a Gaiwan, nor do I have time. I steeped a 5G chunk of this for 3 minutes, & it is delicious. I resteeped for 4, still delicious. Now I’m going back for 5 min. Admittedly, this is the way I’m enjoying my Shu’s lately. I like them the other way too, but it takes time & if I wait around to have more time, I never end up drinking them.

So this one brewed into a nice deep cup of awesomeness. No fish, not even a compost pile, just a rich dark sweet cup with a nice cinnamon flavor to it. This was a sample from Garret, which I am very grateful for, & will probably need to purchase some of.

Meanwhile, I REALLY WANT the blue lotus teapot on the Mandala site. Garret, feel free to start wrapping it up for me, & if there is only one left, please set it aside, because I want it. When I buy it, can you send me a sample of the ‘not so mini tuochas’? They sound delicious!

K S

“5oz chunk” that is a lot of leaf! lol

Terri HarpLady

Oops! Thanks KS! Obviously it was suppose to be 5G, I’m just a dork. I fixed it. :)

Fjellrev

5 oz is like Beethoven’s sixty beans to a cup!

Thank you Garret for including a generous sample of this tea in my last order!

I haven’t really been drinking that much Puerh lately, & I’m trying to add it back into my life, as I really enjoy it. This one is a deep dark chocolate brown, with beautiful strands of gold weaving through it. It has the aroma & flavor profile that I tend to love, kind of a buttered semolina taste with a pinch of salt. It has a nice grounding feeling initially, & then the qi starts circulating. Although it’s earthy, there isn’t any ammonia, fishiness, or barnyard kinds of things here, but more of a warm forest floor feeling.

Terri HarpLady

I guess I should mention that I followed Gongfu protocol here, using 7 G of tea, 4 oz Gaiwan, short steepings, gradually lengthening the time.
Next time I’ll try it with a longer steep, for comparison.

Bonnie

YEH, I haven’t had puerh much lately either…waz with that?

Sipdown! I’m at 199 teas!
I’ve enjoyed this black tea, which is rolled up in the ‘spring snail’ style. The flavor is very savory, it still reminds me of fire roasted chilis & masa harina, lol.

Sil

proud of you lady! I’m at 160. BUT i have a long weekend… plan is to get back to 150 at the very least..but maaaybe i can do 140

Terri HarpLady

Wow! Just wow, Sil, you rock! :)

Terri HarpLady

Right now it feels like it would probably take a miracle to get down to 150, but if I ever get serious about drinking up all of my Verdant tea club teas (both classic & reserve), I could probably do it. :D

Sil

i felt like it would be a miracle to get there…but i did it. I really need to take some time to drink my reserve club teas. Maybe i can do that this weekend. have a verdant reserve focus

I though maybe next week I might try that…or else in January, LOL, when I have nothing better to do than drink tea, & prepare for my annual Birthday Gala Gig

Good morning Steepster! This is a lovely black bilochun style tea, with a thick, rich, & resinous flavor that I’m really enjoying this morning.
I steeped a loose Tbl in my 16 oz pot for 3 minutes. Now I’m resteeping for 5.

I’ve been really busy lately, & I feel that my tea logging has been rather lame, but thus is life, right?
On monday I booked 2 weddings, one in dec & one for next sept
On Tuesday I booked the first of my recurrent xmas gigs. I have several companies that usually hire me to play in the lobby of their building for a few hours once each december. That’s the month that I basically live in my car, lol
Yesterday I booked my Trio (harp, flute, cello/bass) to do a 2 hour gig at the st louis art museum, a private party that wants 2 hours of all Beatles tunes. That should be fun!
I have a few other gigs in the works, it will be interesting to see what the day brings!

I do like this tea. This morning I tried gongfu steepings, & I enjoyed that very much. Nicely malty, bold, & a good wakeup!

Garret

I just had this at a restaurant where our teas are served. It was really so very nice to enjoy a great meal while sipping some of this tea. Glad you like it!! It’s a nice tea.

Terri HarpLady

I wish the restaurants in St Louis served your teas!

Garret

Perhaps we need to expand? :)

Sil

Garret – yes..to toronto. :)

Terri HarpLady

:)
Maybe someday as my retirement project I’ll open a tea room in St. Louis, just offering tea during certain hours of the day. No menu, I’ll just pick out a nice tea pairing for that day. I’ll only include my favorite teas, of course, & people could purchase some to take home. The best part? Even though I might not make any money, I could count the whole thing as a tax deduction (much like all of my musical endeavors/equipment/toys/etc.)

Terri HarpLady

Heck, I should just start a ‘teaclub’ now, & serve tea at my house once a week.

First tea of the day!
I steeped at 3 min, & then re-steeped at 5.
This is a rich & resinous cup with a nice bass note.
The flavor is savory & rustic, & still reminds me of masa harina & roasted poblano chili’s, maybe some roasted carrots too.
Nice & thick in the mouth, smooth & bold.

Garret

HI!! A few of the coffeehouses and teahouses we supply to go through this tea like wild! I am really happy that you like it, too! Thank you, again, for taking the time, my friend, to write down your impressions!

My pleasure! I’ve enjoyed everything I’ve tried so far! :)
