Drank this when I was out earlier and found it reasonably enjoyable. The drink wasn’t too sweet like how Starbuck’s makes some of their drinks and the rooibos base made a surprsingly creamy-tasting latte.
I was a bit annoyed that they didn’t bother to take the tea bag out of the cup though. I’m not sure if you can overbrew rooibos – but still!
Preparation
I’ve never been able to get into this tea. I’ve never really understood black/green tea blends, because they have to be brewed so differently. It seems like one of them is always going to be suffering, and I didn’t find anything especially wonderful about this blend’s taste. I’d rather have either a black tea, a green tea, or an oolong- just not all together.
If I’m getting a cup of tea at Starbucks, this is generally what I get. This tea has a fairly strong spicy flavor that works well with milk, and I find it more interesting than the Awake blend, which is basically the only other option for black tea when one is at the ’bucks.
Tea like this makes one realize why one drinks tea in the first place. I have tried chai flavors in coffees and latte’s, but they pale in comparison to the flavor that is delivered by this tea. Tazo knows tea and does tea with a passion and to perfection.
I realized after awhile of sitting on this note that Tazo Chai has black pepper in it. When I let this tea sit for too long I can really taste it. Maybe I steeped it too long or the water was too hot. But, phew, it was strong after awhile.
Bergamot like WOAH! This is the bergamot to end all bergamots and not in a good way. It’s so strong that it tastes quite bitter and oddly enough the sweetener doesn’t seem to alleviate this; instead it just provides an odd counterpoint.
And WTF Starbucks, is it too much effort to take the tea bag out before you give it to me?! It’s not exactly a nice experience to take a gulp of what I thought was foam and instead get a mouthful of mesh teabag. Yuck.
Had a dark yellow liquor. The smell was immediately pear and ginger. The actual tastes ranged from hints of pear to ginger and smacks of black pepper.
The tea is hot and spicy in a green tea fashion. All things considered, they could have made the pear flavor more obvious. Definitely wasn’t my favorite of the Tazo line-up. But a nice tea and not to be overlooked.
I don’t think I’ve ever managed to oversteep a rooibos, and that’s saying something given my penchant for forgetting things. Like that I’ve got tea steeping.
But that IS annoying. Tsk tsk, Starbucks.
