January 2022 → An Earl Grey tea
Oh goodness, I feel exhausted. Sleepy yes, but also my body is just tired. Today was a bit of an emotional roller coaster. Nothing awful really – I just felt my feelings and it left me wrecked. This is everyone, right? I personally blame my wonky nervous system.
I wanted something that felt solid but not caffeinated so I’m going with this decaf EG. It’s not always been the most flavorful, so I used two teabags instead of one. I have to say, that must be the secret because it’s so good! Just what I need to help me power through the dinner prep.
Preparation
Craving Earl Grey tonight and Twinings is admittedly one of my favorites. I can tell a difference between the decaf and caffeinated versions, but it’s not so much that I would throw out my decaf. Need a good option when the craving hits. Upping my rating from a 53 because it’s really not so bad as all that.
Flavors: Bergamot
I’m making an attempt this week to go through some of my bagged teas. We have so many that they are overflowing into a basket on the floor. I’m hoping to at least drink enough to store everything inside the tea cabinet.
I’m sensitive to caffeine so sometimes I like to reach for a decaf tea if I’m feeling a bit off. I try to keep a few options on hand so I don’t have to rely fully on rooibos or herbals when what I really want is a strong black tea. Earl Grey is a favorite and I have a soft spot for the Twinings version since it basically kicked off my tea journey. I have to say though, this cup did nothing for me. The bergamot flavor was weak. I don’t like it to be overpowering (that’s only happened for me once), but I would like for it to be firm in its commitment as an Earl Grey!
This is not going to be a keeper for me, I’m afraid. It’s too bad because there really is a shortage of great decaf black teas. Does anyone have teas you would recommend in this category?
Preparation
Sipdown!
Dry it smells of strawberries and blueberries.
Steeping you get more of the black tea and the fresh fruit smell is slowly going away.
Taste of strawberry medicine and sadly I am not a fan :( It smelled really good dry with the fruit and such but the black tea just overpowers it. It tastes like the traditional black tea with artificial flavoring.
Flavors: Artificial
Preparation
Method: Teabag
Steep Time: Entire duration of the experience
Water temp: Boiling
Brew style: Western, in a glass mug
Finishing this box off. It’s good to clear some tea shelf space!
Teabag/ dry leaf doesn’t give off much of a scent. Mostly just the paper.
Liquor is a pale translucent yellowish color. It’s not really possible to oversteep this, so I just let the teabag stay in the water the whole time. Steeped, it gives off strong lime and ginger notes, with a hint of sweetness.
In an older note of mine on this blend, I mentioned a note of coconut on the sip. Not sure where that came from, as I’m not getting anything like that today. I taste predominantly lime. I’m still reminded of Coca-Cola, even though I’m not tasting any of the sweetness that I smell. The ginger has definitely faded in potency over time; however, I still get a pleasant tingling sensation from it in the aftertaste. I can feel this tisane settling warmly in my chest, similar to the way a good homemade broth does.
Normally, I’m not a huge hibiscus fan, but I think this white hibiscus is much less tart than the regular red type. It’s a nice vehicle for the lime and ginger. This is a great, low-maintenance blend for chasing away the sniffles and chest congestion, or for those times when you simply crave a warming, spicy herbal blend.
Probably won’t repurchase unless I’m sick, but this is definitely a solid grocery-store option in the event that that happens. It’s pleasantly medicinal, if that’s a thing.
Flavors: Ginger, Lime, Medicinal, Pleasantly Sour, Sweet
Preparation
A good, affordable substitute for the Recover tea from Teavana, which I still miss at this time of year. The ginger and lime together remind me of Coca-Cola, although I got a note of coconut as well. It’s… almost Christmas-y. I quite like the smoother flavor of white hibby.
Flavors: Citrusy, Coconut, Ginger, Pleasantly Sour, Spices
After a childhood of fresh ginger and lemon juice infusions, it was hard to imagine a tea bag living up to the rejuvenating flavour I love. But this one was quite good!
I’m still amazed at how real it tasted. It was like fresh lemon juice and zest with earthy ginger. I brewed it way too long the first time (3 minutes) and it was almost too strong to drink. 2:30 is about right to tame the acidity and fire.
It needs honey, a lot of honey.
The flavour isn’t amazing or even soothing… but it’s real. I respect that.
Also I’m noticing a huge difference in the boxes sold in the US and the UK. Not sure what acrobats with swimming hats has to do with lemon and ginger, but it’s nice to look at I guess.

Flavors: Earth, Ginger, Lemon Zest, Spicy
Preparation
I receveived a tea bag (one, two, I can not recall) from Izzy – thanks!
Need something simple this morning. This would work I guess. Earl Grey is quite a common, but nice blend.
Interesting that it is considered high quality (by price) here. Getting an Twinings is like buying better things. But this tea should not be there. It is generic black tea with fresh, citrus notes. It does not taste so artificial as the Ahmad I had other day. But still, far from good. Black tea base is bold, but without any taste. It is just cheap something.
Bit above average, because it is not artificial. But tea base is thing to improve.
Flavors: Bergamot, Citrus
I too find the whole holiday period and emotional roller coaster ride, or used to. Health challenges here as well. For me, meditation has been a big help.
