drank Rooibos Strawberry Cream by Wegmans

Major headache, trying this to ease the pain, not really cutting it right now. Not that I thought this would make the headache go away, I didn’t, I just thought it would help to relax me, instead, I think I just need to go to sleep early…Sorry for the complaining.

Tea: Very dark today, perhaps oversteeped, definitely taste rooibos and strawberries, the cream is mostly lost, but it just adds a different flavor to the strawberries, not creamy per se, but varied.

You aren’t complaining. Maybe you need a little caffeine. Sometimes warm just isn’t enough for me. I hate headaches. They’re the worst. Transfering from the couch back into my chair takes more movement than for an able bodied person to just stand so when I have a headache I’m normally too sore to move. i.e. too sore to make tea. Feel better!

Cinoi

Thanks, I needed to sleep it off, feeling better now :)

takgoti

Glad to hear you’re feeling better. Headaches blow.

These were tea bags, so the dried unsteeped leaves do not really have an aroma. Once steeped, the tea did not have very much aroma either.

The first time I had the tea, I brewed three minutes, hot with no sugar. It was a sweeter tea, being rooibos and strawberries, but with a slight creamy after taste, it was a pleasant surprise. There was not a lot of strawberry flavor, but I think it did add to the overall sweetness of the tea.

I tried it again, I steeped it for five minutes, hot with no sugar. This was sweeter than the shorter infusion, but still very little strawberry flavor. However, the longer brew time increased the creaminess of the tea.

It was a decent tea.

We had the remaining two pots de creme for dessert tonight, so it had to be this tisane :) Such a great pairing. Warm, rich “supporting actor” to the dessert. My husband said, “This is heavenly!”

Last week I stopped by my favorite thrift shop, and lo and behold – they had brand new oven safe ramekins! A really good brand too! 4 for $3 (they sell these same ones on Amazon for $15). Thrift score!!! Ramekins have been on my want list for the past year, ever since my trip to California, so that I could make pots de creme like I had at Deetjens (see my previous tasting note on this tea to read the story :)

So today I made them with David Lebovitz’s recipe:

http://www.culinate.com/books/collections/all_books/ready_for_dessert/chocolate_pots_de_creme

and we had two of them for dessert tonight. Of course I had to serve them with plain rooibos, just like when I had it at Deetjens. Ahhh, the memories. The plain rooibos was so good with the rich chocolate. Without sweetening, it acted almost like a coffee substitute. Very satisfying paired together.

I don’t know when I’ll get back to Big Sur, but I can always have a little taste of it now and again :)

Yay Big Sur!

Rabs

I’m not a big chocolate fan, but my lordy does that recipe look amazing!

Lori

Yes the recipe does look good. And weirdly the rich chocolate would be a good match to plain rooibos..

gmathis

I broke out in a cold sweat just reading the ingredients!

I stuck my nose in my husband’s humidor this afternoon whilst he was adding water and it really did remind me of rooibos. Fine tobacco and wood. We had some tonight with honey.

Last night I lost all track of time! I sat down for my nightly tea at 10:30pm! I didn’t want to be up all night so I chose this. Luckily I genuinely like rooibos – maybe because I also love coffee and my husband’s cigars (I think it has a faint tobacco like quality) and because of the story I’m about to tell…

I’m reminded of another night that I wanted my nightly tea very late at night – we were in California in June, staying at Deetjens in Big Sur. We came back to our cabin tired from a day of adventure, but in the mood for something sweet and our nightly tea, but it was also past 10pm, and the restaurant part of the inn was winding down for the evening.

Here is a picture to help you imagine:

http://www.deetjens.com/restaurant.htm

(third picture down, the bar room, first table – that is exactly where we were sitting!)

The hostess remembered us from another night we were there for dinner – my husband’s stomach was upset and they fixed him soup and we didn’t have dessert because of it – so she told us she was glad we were now ready for dessert and brought us pot de creme and a nice sized teapot of rooibos. How could you not like rooibos after that? :) Every time I have it the taste brings me back to that night. I keep on saying that I am going to seek out flavored rooibos and try a variety of additions, but I never do. I now realize this is why :)

Ricky

Yay for tea that brings back memories. Those teas are the best =]

takgoti

That is awesome. I heart Big Sur.

gmathis

What a neat memory!

Lovely looking Inn. It figures that it’s not on my coast. Thanks for sharing your rooibos memory.

chrine – it’s across the country from me too :) My husband won free airfare in the continental US at his office holiday party last year, so we decided to go to Northern California. We spent 3 days in SF then over a week in Big Sur, and we drove to other points like Monterey and Carmel some of the days. We even drove to Napa one day from Big Sur (and got lost and almost wound up at the border of Nevada but that is another story for another day!).

Had this again last night. I had an appointment with the accountant previously, and a 7:30 am dentist appointment this morning! I probably could have used something much stronger than rooibos, but, since I have an active imagination, it sufficed! I felt warm, comforted, relaxed, and fell asleep (and stayed asleep!) within a half hour of my last, tasty, sip. I really have to look into some more flavors :)

This was good! I was in the mood for some tea, and drinking caffeine at 9:30 pm is pushing it, even for me! I went with this rooibos instead of my usual black. I sweetened it with a little honey and sat and relaxed with it. I feel nice and warm and happy – they say rooibos is calming and I think it’s true :)

One of my favorite teas, bold but not overpowering. Highly recommended for green tea drinkers since it isn’t very strong like other black teas

I decided to try a few teaspoonfuls of this tea because of reading about it on the forum. I was pleasantly surprised that I did not hate it. The mint is a bit too strong for me and leaves a tingle on my lips and tongue., but it also has a very calming effect. All in all I guess this tea wasn’t too bad. I would buy it again every once in a while if im in the mood.

I purchased this tea on a whim while at Wegmans. I kind of regret only buying $0.84 worth! I normally don’t drink pu-erh because it reminds me of drinking dirt, but this one was fairly nice. I taste the orange when it hits my tongue, but it’s the ginger that’s the predominant flavor in this tea. It goes down spicy and warms the throat. It’s good for the morning but I also found it excellent after a large meal or if I was feeling under the weather.

Wegman’s RULES! :P

I can spend hours there! I read that they use loose leaf teas from Ito EN, Rishi, and Republic of Tea.

A fine if relatively unremarkable green tea, suitable for the daily cup at work or in the evening. Good value for the price.

a little over 1.5 T at 4 mins. steeped much darker and much more bold taste than my first attempt but now I am out of it. Will do more infusions until I can no longer. I think anything past 4 mins the first time around would be bitter…just a theory. :P

Backlogging from the weekend…It was a mellow Black Tea with a nice scent and taste of Mango. Bought it bulk just to try. Nice to try but not something I would buy in large quantities.

Backlogging…not bad but mostly mint and little chai…done with my 2-cups worth via bulk purchase

Mint and chai to me seems like it would be a weird combo.

I’m really not sure about this one. It’s Blueberry Black Flavored Tea and it smells great but it’s blueberry flavored and not actual blueberry or natural blueberry…it seems to be a bit bitter which interrupts the potential blueberry goodness. It’s not awful but I don’t think I would buy it again and I am glad I did the bulk and only enough for 2 cups.
