The website lists this tea as “I can’t believe it’s not Scotch.” Intriguing to some one who’s been drinking Scotch for nearly 40 years. I had to try it.

First things first: it doesn’t smell like Scotch. More like a Yunnan, though there is quite a bit of smoke in the aroma. (OK, the tea is Fujian, and I’m not expert enough to tell them apart) Also, perhaps a bit of cocoa and spice. It is complex, but not as subtle as a good Scotch.

As to the taste, it is good, with wood smoke and a bit of loamy flavor. Not my favorite style, but quite well done. Fairly big and chewy. Long finish with less wood but no bitterness.

Overall a nice solid tea. I enjoyed it, and might be tempted to re-order. But forget the Scotch business; it isn’t even close.

Thanks to Yezi tea for the Sample.

This re-steeped nicely. The second steep lost some of the earthiness and power, but retained the smoke and complexity. The third steep was rather simple and lost most of the aroma, but tasted OK.

I decided to have this light, calming tea for an after dinner treat alongside some macarons. The flavors in this tea are so light and subtle that it was a little overpowered by the sweet macarons I was eating. Nevertheless, I enjoyed the sweet, slightly hay-like flavor of the tea. I think that white teas are really starting to grow on me. I’ll have to do some more exploring in terms of white teas!

So I received some samples from Yezi Tea through their free sample deal, and this one was accidentally sent to me instead of White Peony Master Grade Bai Mu Dan. For whatever reason, I decided to try this one first! The dry leaves almost remind me of dried anchovies for some reason. The tea itself, though, smells and tastes very grassy. I’m not really picking up any of the “peach and plum” as the description of the tea says, but it does seem slightly sweet. Anyway, I’m liking the nice clean taste. I accidentally let half the cup go cold, but I actually think I prefer it cold than hot. Interesting.

Subsequent infusions did fade a bit, but still have the creamy flavor profile of the earlier infusions really holding on. Reeeally wish I had more of this. I feel like there’s more to explore with this tea. I think I’ll buy some.

I wish my sample contained enough more than one session. Only two steeps in, but so far a very warm flavor, very smooth taste, definitely savory and buttery. Definitely needs a pause after each sip to truly appreciate it. The second steep is far superior to the first, once you learn how to drink it. I think this tea would benefit from gaiwan brewing, I feel like I’m cheating it brewing western style. I wasn’t initially impressed, but the more time I spend with this tea, the more I find myself enjoying it. I feel like these leaves have a lot left to offer, so I’ll update again with a rating once they’re spent.

This is fairly smooth. Gently Sweet – much like a bit of sugar cane. Towards the end of the sip I can pick up on subtle peachy notes as well. First infusions hint at a bit of smoke but additional infusions the smoke flavors are diminished.

I do like this one a great deal, tho!
