1548 Tasting Notes

Yay, first fresh green of the year. Thick, sweet, smooth and round. My smart-ass boss asked what the phluck I was drinking (grandpa in a glass cup). I think he said something about seaweed. My work partner-in-crime said it looked like an anemone in the cup. For all the marine references, it’s amusing in a tea snoot way that I think this tastes like fresh, sweet scallops. Maybe I’m not crazy? I felt so crazy this morning, though, that I left work 2 hours in. Turns out the vaccine is kicking my ass 2 days later. Shame I’m glued to the bed with fatigue and aching arms and legs – it’s a beautiful day and the garden needs working.

Mastress Alita

Woah, a fresh tea?! (Can’t remember the last time she had one…)

Mastress Alita

Also, I oddly didn’t get the “vaccine fatigue” until 5 days after!

Martin Bednář

Get better soon :) !

ashmanra

Oh dear! Feel better quickly! I get shot 2 tomorrow.

Daylon R Thomas

2nd dose kicked my butt too.

Kawaii433

Feel better soon! I got my second about 12 days ago. I had a slight rash but it could’ve just been the new detergent we’re using. hugs

Leafhopper

I hope you’re feeling better! I can’t wait to get my first dose of the vaccine, regardless of the side effects.

derk

All’s well. Hoping the worst of it came with the first shot. What is Ontario’s vaccination plan?

Leafhopper

I think the U.S. is way ahead of us. We’re vaccinating everyone over 70 years old with the Pfizer and Moderna shots at mass immunization clinics, and offering the AstraZeneca vaccine to everyone over 40 (though there are supply issues). I’ll have to wait my turn until they start vaccinating younger people.

Leafhopper

Also, I’m glad you’re feeling better! :)

drank Mango Peach Fusion by Tea & Trumpets
1548 tasting notes

Tea & Trumpets is a local-to-me Sonoma County tea blender who sets up shop regularly at the farmers market in town. A coworker gifted me, among other tastythings, a couple large bags of their teas for my birthday.

I made a few hours’ long ambient temperature brew yesterday with as much leaf as would fit in my steeper basket. How big is the pitcher? I dunno, 2 liters? Drinking it cold today, it has a really strong flavor! It’s very thrist-quenching and tastes a lot like The Teabook’s Impeachmint Tea which was a very similar blend. Mango Peach Fusion eschews the political snark for great flavor. It’s fruity but low-pitched and sweet because of the red rooibos but also has this thick, slightly herbaceous basil-licorice dimension from the tulsi. The mango flavor is a bit of a mystery, as it usually is in flavored blends. It’s never quite mango, you know? Really digging this one. It’s like a summer sunset.

If you’re out there, Sean, thank you!

Flavors: Basil, Fruity, Herbaceous, Licorice, Mango, Peach, Rooibos, Sweet, Tulsi

Dustin

I’m going to be in Sonoma through the weekend. Maybe I’ll try to stop by one of their farmers markets!

Evol Ving Ness

You guys have farmer’s markets open now? So jealous. Ours have been shut down for over a year now.

Mastress Alita

Same, Evol. Pretty much everything is open around here and has been for a while (Idaho has been pretty “meh” about the whole “thing that happened in 2020” overall) but I haven’t seen any Farmer’s Markets yet. Or maybe that’s just because our weather doesn’t get nicely spring warm until a little later…

Evol Ving Ness

Wow! Awesome(?) or Boo (?)

Here it is cold, but many farmer’s markets run indoors in normal times with more emphasis on cheeses, baked goods, cured meats, preserves, and such.

drank Jin Guazi (2018) by Old Ways Tea

It is not often (enough) one is in awe.

Flavors: Brown Sugar, Butternut Squash, Cinnamon, Cream, Floral, Flowers, Leather, Mineral, Moss, Nutty, Orange, Orchid, Osmanthus, Rainforest, Red Apple, Savory, Smooth, Spicy, Sweet, Sweet Potatoes, Tangy, Tobacco

gmathis

I am slow. And perpetually distracted, this week more than usual. Do you always alphabetize your flavor profiles? If you do, dear one, I am in more awe of you than ever!

Mastress Alita

Steeper always rearranges all the items input in the Flavor field into alphabetical order for display.

ashmanra

Mastress Alita: I didn’t know that! Neat, but also…I think I would want them in order of strength!

gmathis

I’m too loosey-goosey to use that particular feature, so I was clearly not paying attention :)

Evol Ving Ness

Loosely- here too. and I would prefer to go in terms of strength too, if I were prone to organizing them in any kind of way at all.

I have been marvelling at the posters who have been posting alphabetically. For me to be able to track down the exact tea I want is already a colossal achievement. Never mind the one’s I have forgotten about.

Also, this tea sounds stellar. Thank you for bringing it to our attention.

Evol Ving Ness

Loosely goosey. This auto correct is killing me.

gmathis

I think my phone auto correct has just given up on me, the way I make up words to suit the moment.

drank Spring Equinox Dragonwell by Totem Tea
1548 tasting notes

Thanks to White Antlers, I was able to have a full pouch of green tea to serve as the herald of spring before any fresh harvests could arrive at my front door.

The dry leaf of this smells a lot like Caramel Creams – those Cow Tales candies. I don’t recall ever seeing those candies in this area of California. I’ve mostly been cold-brewing this because the tea is old (though in fantastic shape!) and it makes a nice cold cup that tastes like the quintessential iced green tea in a bottle. Kinda sweet, kinda nutty, kinda ‘green’ and kinda bitter. I’m having a cup grandpa style today. With all the pollen doing its sticky business, my schnoz is stuffy so today this smells like peanut butter toast when brewing.

Little personal edit: Large gatherings leave me milling about looking for people to chat with one-on-one. My cousin had her wedding shower this weekend and because of my tendency to stray from the crowd, I of course chatted with the tender of drinks. I have a date after my second vaccine, the first of which I received this morning.

Martin Bednář

Try the Linden for the “schnoz”. I keep learning here…

derk

Yup, the linden will be coming into play soon. It really does work for my mild congestion.

Cameron B.

I’m the same way with large crowds. Introverts unite! And hooray for the impending date! :D

ashmanra

Oh neat! For the date I mean! I get my second shot Friday. Hooray!

Dustin

We get our 2nd on Friday as well! A hot shower really helped me with the sore arm discomfort.
It’s so weird trying to remember and relearn how this whole socializing in person thing goes!

derk

I’ve been feeling pretty uninspired and uncommunicative the past few months, so it was nice to have a goofy conversation and find some common ground. Hope you (ashmanra) and Dustin get through the 2nd shot with little negative reaction.

Dustin

Thanks! Same for you!

Martin Bednář

I wrote the comment before “little personal edit”: I am a bit envious that you get the vaccines! Nothing like that for youngsters like me here. And happy to hear about the date.

I miss goofy conversations too, and it is pretty much annoying. Yes, I have been with my family, but friends are friends…

Honestly, I can’t tell much difference between this and regular Sleepytime. It feels a little cooler in the mouth from that sweet and strong Pacific northwest peppermint. Mint forward but balanced by florals and citrusy lemongrass.

Flavors: Citrusy, Floral, Hay, Herbal, Lemongrass, Peppermint, Salty, Spearmint, Sweet

gmathis

This is a new one on me—certainly haven’t seen it locally. More mint couldn’t hurt!

derk

I don’t know when I’ll be at my aunt’s again, but I’ll snag a few bags for you next time. She’s the keeper of the 20-box bagged tea drawer!

gmathis

Everybody needs an aunt like that!

Tastes like chopped Chinese sencha. It’s okay. It has that toasty-biscuity flavor of generic Chinese oolong with buttery dry grass and minerals, some astringency. It makes me feel warm. Not a green I’d want to have to cool off.

Flavors: Astringent, Butter, Dry Grass, Toasty

I found myself kind of at a loss for how to brew this tea so I opted to empty the entire 4g sample in my 150mL glass gaiwan and do somewhat short steeps.

This tea, while a past year’s harvest, has so much more character than the Huoshan huang ya I had a few years ago at Imperial Tea Court. It is subtle, yes, but it has a slick and oily medium body that carries a sweet and alkaline taste, like a mix of corn husk, gently roasted buttery nuts, some kind of mild, sweet seafood like squid, quartz-like minerality and hint of anise. It’s a little cooling-spicy in the throat, too. Short, sweet, buttery and flowery mouth-watering aftertaste. Gentle nourishment with no bitterness or astringency.

Thank you for the sample, Mandala :)

Edit: It’s on sale right now.

drank Unknown Oolong by Liquid Proust Teas
1548 tasting notes

A packet of rock oolong that came from an aged oolong group buy orchestrated by Liquid Proust several years ago. Disregarding my Chinese character illiteracy, all I can read on the packet is “Ye Cha.” I don’t know if this translates as “Wild Tea” or something else.

Had this lackadaisical morning before a breakfast of chorizo and eggs (tea and breakfast made me 15 minutes late to work, whoopsie), I don’t remember much. It seems the roast was light and there were absolutely no lingering roast notes, just a nice warm toasty tone to the mineral sweet and dry woody deal. The flavor persisted for many infusions, which was a nice change of pace from so many rock oolong that seem to give all their life within the first few short infusions. Pliable and healthy spent leaves. A very friendly tea that I think would be great for beginners to rock oolong.

I created “Unknown Oolong” to house my many upcoming notes for teas from that group buy.

Flavors: Brown Toast, Chocolate, Jam, Mineral, Raspberry, Sweet, Toasty, Wood

It is amazing that cravings for teas akin egg & toast on Saturday sunny morning. You can’t fool your body but it is almost like it wants to experiment by merely reading description of brews.

Kiki:

“Ok, I though it was strawberry at first and grape candy but it tastes like, uh, bergamot and black tea. It tastes berrylike. That’s good. It’s got a little tartness in there, too. Maybe it’s a little hibuscus or something. I like it, it’s good. I could drink it again. I’d say it’s an 8.5. It’s got that exotic smell, you know. Can I have another cup?”

derk:

This smells really good. I see where Kiki is getting grape candy, it has that tone but lacks the sweetness. I interpret it more as blackberry. It’s a smooth, dark woody but mild black tea that transitions to some tartness and astringency. Seems mostly like a Ceylon black. Bergamot is definitely there, stronger on the swallow, but I think it melds well with the berry and black tea. Dang pleasant. This tea oozes French. I’ve never been to France, but I think about its Mediterranean coast and while there is no lavender in this blend, my mind keeps wandering there. I enjoy this one. (Edit: except now I have a headache.) Thank you, Cameron B. :)

Spring 2020 harvest

Dry — dark chocolate, peanut butter, malt, slight rye. Warm — dark chocolate, oak, osmanthus, vegetable oil.

Western has a very forward, sweet chocolate-honey-apricot taste for me with a delightful and drawn out powdery white floral and osmanthus finish. Overall, the tea is rich and deep upfront but a little thin-textured for my likes.

Gongfu, this tea has a good, viscous structure with balanced astringency and tannins. More tangy than western, less sweet. There’s also a nice swallow that I get from a lot of Old Ways Tea’s Fujian blacks – it’s squeaky, full and satisfying and I can feel it cool my throat. The tea is a bit drying but I think that allows the aftertaste to continue developing in the minutes after finishing a cup. Floral, rich and fruity notes of osmanthus and honeyed apricot-orange-peach with touches of caramel, chocolate and sweet potato linger in the mouth and sinuses. These aromatics are more apparent than the actual taste of the tea. Bottom of the cup retains a very sweet and deep osmanthus note supported by chocolate and red cherry. Comfortable energy. This tea is currently on sale.

Nice tea. Happy Easter :)

Flavors: Apricot, Caramel, Cherry, Chocolate, Drying, Floral, Flowers, Honey, Malt, Menthol, Oak, Orange, Osmanthus, Peach, Peanut, Rye, Sweet, Sweet Potatoes, Tangy

Profile

Bio

This place, like the rest of the internet, is dead and overrun with bots. And thus I step away.

Eventual tea farmer. If you are a tea grower, want to grow your own plants or are simply curious, please follow me so we can chat.

I most enjoy loose-leaf, unflavored teas and tisanes. Teabags have their place. Some of my favorite teas have a profound effect on mind and body rather than having a specific flavor profile. Terpene fiend.

Favorite teas generally come from China (all provinces), Taiwan, India (Nilgiri and Manipur). Frequently enjoyed though less sipped are teas from Georgia, Japan, Nepal and Darjeeling. While I’m not actively on the hunt, a goal of mine is to try tea from every country that makes it available to the North American market. This is to gain a vague understanding of how Camellia sinensis performs in different climates. I realize that borders are arbitrary and some countries are huge with many climates and tea-growing regions.

I’m convinced European countries make the best herbal teas.

Personal Rating Scale:

100-90: A tea I can lose myself into. Something about it makes me slow down and appreciate not only the tea but all of life or a moment in time. If it’s a bagged or herbal tea, it’s of standout quality in comparison to similar items.

89-80: Fits my profile well enough to buy again.

79-70: Not a preferred tea. I might buy more or try a different harvest. Would gladly have a cup if offered.

69-60: Not necessarily a bad tea but one that I won’t buy again. Would have a cup if offered.

59-1: Lacking several elements, strangely clunky, possess off flavors/aroma/texture or something about it makes me not want to finish.

Unrated: Haven’t made up my mind or some other reason. If it’s pu’er, I likely think it needs more age.
