Puerh ID

I ordered this tea from Dragon Tea House via Amazon:

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00H1EJNFG/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o04_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

I have gotten through most of the cake now and have enjoyed it (especially for the price!), but as you can see there are a lot of ‘tag’ words in the title and I’m not really sure what this tea is! I’m relatively new to puerh (a couple of years, but haven’t gotten to try too much), but it seems like there is some information missing, or maybe it has even been rewrapped, because I can’t find the label elsewhere.
Anybody else have this or know what it is?

Ugh, what a hacky translation of a cake’s name, I can’t tell what the factory is, but the description seems to be saying it’s from the area of Bing Dao (here mistranslated as Iceland, when it should translate as Ice Island), in Mengku county, which is weird though because puerh from there is usually high-end raw puerh, not cheap ripe stuff. I don’t recognize the brand of the wrapper myself, but someone that can read the chinese on it should be able to tell you more.

Thanks for the “Iceland” explanation! That makes a lot of sense, and is an entertaining mis-translation. I found another seller on Amazon that claims (or maybe it was automatically labelled) that it was produced by Menghai, though that seems unlikely:

I’ll do a little searching for any ripe that I can find from Bing Dao, thanks again for a point in the right direction.

there’s a billion factories that’ve put “Menghai” in their name in some capacity, just because the real one is so popular, but that’s definitely not Dayi. Probably more like a small unknown “Menghai Something Something Tea Factory”, theres so many of them. Or maybe it’s not menghai anything at all and just a terrible scammy amazon listing, if it is bingdao, that’s in mengku county, not menghai, though honestly it might not be actual bingdao leaves either, just borrowing a famous name, very little of the stuff labeled as Banzhang is actually from there for example.

I think someone just used google translate to list these, I assume stale is supposed to mean aged?

Yeah “stale” most of the time means aged. Definately
NOT Menghai Tea Factory. Best assumption would be Menghai area tea production. Menghai is pretty specific on their labels. I think I have seen this on a couple of ebay auctions as well.
There are lots of good non mainstream teas out there. I usually stick to the mainline factories and those sourcing their own material for shou. I think the quality/sanitation is a bit better.

I know for a fact that the “Dragon Tea House” on Amazon is not the same as the “Dragon Tea House” on EBay and on their own website. I emailed Dragon Tea House about this a while ago when I noticed that the teas offered on Amazon were different from EBay. I have in fact ordered from both but the site on Amazon seems a little bit shady in some ways. That being said, they are backed by Amazon so your money is always safe. I found their puerh average.

Wow, that’s really interesting. At one point I know that I saw this particular cake for sale on Ebay, though I’m not sure what seller it was from. I agree that the Amazon DTH seems a little shady, so I was surprised (pleasantly) to see such high praise for it around here, but this explains a lot! Either way, I’ll probably reorder this cake again from one seller or another.
