Teapot Repair

I brought home a pottery teapot from my trip to Japan last year (I know – only one teapot!!) only to find that, using it for the first time, the base of the spout has a small crack. It’s small, but large enough to slowly leak the brew once I start pouring. The crack is also located in an area of the pot that’s really tricky to get to from the inside. I need an expert that can fix it – does anyone have any suggestions? Ideally they would be located in NYC, but I’ll be grateful for any help, even if I have to send it away for repair (as long as it’s within the US). Many thanks for your input, fellow Steepsters!

Thanks, Cwyn! Although I doubt it would work for my teapot. I really was hoping to get an expert to do this – I don’t dare touch it myself because I can tell the repair is not straightforward and I don’t want to ruin it.

Honestly you’re going to pay more than what the pot would cost to replace. I’m not even sure somebody who does, say, porcelain repair would take an inexpensive pottery piece, as opposed to costly antiques if they have a backload of work. The site below has a minimum $95, quoting $140-380 for most repairs and this won’t include shipping most likely. They say right on the site that they will advise when it is not worth it to repair.

An update on my leaky teapot dilemma: I remembered someone who we had used years ago on a beautiful pottery jar lid that had broken. Turns out he still does repairs. I sent out the pot with instructions and got it back a couple of days ago. It’s perfect! Leak is gone, and you can’t even see the repair. Best of all, the price could not be beat – 5 dollars for the repair (not including shipping, of course). Totally worth it, and now I’ve got my souvenir from my Japan trip back and working! So very happy!

That is awesome! Glad to hear it!
