30g at a retail price of 29.99? Am I not reading that right?I know its pick your own price but really, I can get beautiful, bright green organic matcha here in town for 11.00. I feel like I am missing something here…I probably am.

You are not missing anything. This is one of our top grades. I did not want you to think I tried to offer the lowest grade matcha to get rid of some low quality product. If you think this product is worth to you $11, than just pay that much and I’ll ship it to you. The whole idea is to pay as much as you wish. After a while I will check if the average price people paid is enough to cover our costs. If it is, I may consider keeping it that way. If it’s less, I’ll just cancel this product after a while. I got this idea from some English band that instead of selling their songs, offered “pay as much as you wish” option and even though the average price was much lower than original, they received a lot more orders so they made some money that way. Band made some money, people got the music at low price. Win – Win. I just want to see if this would work here. That’s all. No tricks. :-)

Alright, I do remember when Radio Head had their music on for the pay as you wish, it was nice. Can you tell me a little more about your product? Storage/packaging, region of production, organic? Also – I would feel bad if some one paid you 1$ for 30g as that is just abusing the system. :)

If someone pays $1, that is the risk I take, but I hope that people will not discount the product that much.
There are 2 matcha teas listed there. One from Japan and one from China. It’s all packaged into resealable bag with zip lock. There is an option of picking non-organic or organic version. See for yourself.

This is an awesome idea! I would suggest being careful about your Starbucks Frappe comparable thing though…as they use extremely low-quality ingredients, and it kinda seems like you’re comparing yourself to their quality (which for many people is a bad thing). I love this idea though! :D

Yes I know that Starbuck’s is not making money by selling best quality for little profit. Unfortunately, most people do know their products. My goal is to get them started by offering lower price and than to keep them as they try and see that quality is also better. Anyway, thank you for the advise. :-)

Cool idea! If you’re looking for other ideas/feedback, I would love to have the option of buying a sampler pack of unflavoured matcha. Like, sample sizes of various different types/grades, so I can compare the flavours of cheaper vs more expensive, Chinese vs Japanese. It might help me decide which I’d want to use as a base for mixing up one of the custom blends.

I completely agree with this… I kind of ordered the sale and “50% off premade blend” ones of the popular things bc I haven’t tried flavored matcha before and didn’t want to invest too much. I have no idea what to be getting.

Thank you for the idea. I will consider making a sample pack.

That’s all well and good for something with no real wholesale or per unit production cost like digital copies of music or games, but for a physical product that you paid a fixed cost for that just seems a bit suicidal. And a bit naive to think there’s any chance it’ll average to anywhere near your cost, once word gets out the internet will deplete your whole stock in an hour for an average of 5 cents.

And you really should set a minimum price, even if it’s only $1, I didn’t place an order, but testing it, the page accepted $0 just fine.

I’m remembering the free samples that Red Leaf offered a few years ago but word spread to various deal sites, 100s (if not 1000s) of orders were put in and the whole thing had to be scrapped. I’m not interested and I wish Red Leaf the best with this idea, but it seems like it’ll go downhill quickly if it gets outside the diehard tea peeps.

This time I’m keeping a close watch on the new idea. That is why there is a limit set to 1 item to prevent abuse and possibly my bankruptcy (LOL). I can not set a minimum price as the system is set up that way. I could get my programmer change it, but the cost of such change would be high for only a temporary feature that may not work out. Besides, whether someone pays $1 or $0, I’m at loss anyway. So far couple people bought it at $9.99, not $0 or $1 yet. If it starts getting crazy, I’ll just stop the promo.

I just got an order from you in the mail, otherwise I would be all over this! I would love to try your top grade matcha :)

+1 to samples. I realize it might be a bit more complicated with flavors as there’s different base and flavouring levels, but at the same time there’s a couple of flavours I’d love to try specifically, but not sure about $16 on a blind buy. As for the pay what you want, I really hope it works out well for you, kudos for trying something new.

So far we only have a few flavors that come in sample size due to high labor cost. It actually takes longer to package small size sample than regular size bag. I tried to find out if outsourcing of this would work, but the quotes I got have minimum of 10,000 pieces per flavor. At this point we are simply way to small for this.
We do not advertise this, but If you are looking for a specific flavored sample, the next time you place an order, request one in the notes during check out. I always try to fulfill any requests.

I appreciate the extra labour involved in making small sizes of the flavoured matcha, which is why I suggested a sampler pack of the unflavoured matcha. Having said that, a sampler pack of flavoured matcha would be really attractive to me as a consumer. I’d much rather taste test something before buying 30g of it, and if I know I really like it, I might even buy 60g. I don’t know if this is practical, but my suggestion would be to sell samples in preselected groups rather than just offering sample sizes in every flavour (which I imagine would be a logistical nightmare). Like, you could have a “Top 5 Bestsellers sample pack” where you make larger batches of those 5 flavours, divide them all up into samples, and then sell as a group rather than individually. If that worked out, maybe you could have a “Fruit Flavour sampler pack” or a “Dessert sampler pack” as well. Maybe it’s not feasible from your end, but I bet they’d be very popular if you could make it work.

That is a great idea! That would entice me to place more orders.

As requested, I have made a Matcha Sampler Pack. You have an option of getting 5 or 10(+2FREE) samples. Instead of making preset packs, in case some of you already have tried some of the flavors in those packs, I offer an option to pick each flavor out of 21 available ones. If this works out, I will be adding new flavors to the list. Let me know if you have other suggestions. Unflavored matcha teas will next.

Could I ask what you sold these teas for before this idea? I have no idea what a fair price is. That being said I rarely drink matcha.

It’s listed by the options as “Regular Price”: $29.99/30g. If you want to try it, enter what you think is a fair price, and buy it. In my previous matcha tests I have always asked to enter what reviewers think is a fair price for tested product. This is just another way to find out what customers think the price should be.
