Everything Matcha

I’m new here and looking to socialize. Tell me about your matcha experiences. Do you drink it casually? Ceremonially? Perhaps in a latte? Have you ever had white tea matcha? I have been in love with matcha for years and have been trying to push it on people for about as long – hopefully I can find some members that love all things matcha.

I like matcha but don’t find myself drinking it often. It’s a tea I don’t like to drink in the evening. The problem with matcha is you get 100% of the caffeine.

White tea matcha sounds like something I’d definitely try!

Oh yeah, I just found out about it! Its not really something you can find in the stores, even if you find a store that sells green matcha. I just ordered some on eBay (it was fairly in expensive) and I’m super excited to try it! I don’t drink it for the antioxidants but if you do you are in for a pleasant surprise.

I have never made matcha myself, just had “green tea lattes” from coffee shops, but matcha sounds like it’s right up my alley, especially because I’m not that big of a fan of black teas and have been in search of a caffeine kick. I love sweet green oolongs and have just started exploring green teas, but matcha sounds like a good middle ground between the two!

What specific matchas/tips would you suggest to a beginner with an appreciation for nice teas, like myself?

Hmm, the first matcha I ever bought was a really low grade one – lots of matcha, really cheap, yellowy colour – but even that really got me hooked. I buy mine now from an organics store who sells ‘west point’ and I don’t think they specifically do tea. Some things I would look for in a matcha are – bright green colour, very very fine grind, and organic if you can. Also see that its been stored properly – in, perhaps, a tin or foil bag that is air tight.

I did not like white matcha, or black matcha for that matter. Maybe there’s a good one out there.

I prefer making mine for smoothies.

Powdered tea does not mean matcha…

The only time a powdered tea is considered to be matcha is if tencha was ground to make it. Unfortunately the word matcha gets associated with many powdered teas that are not from quality leaf such as tencha.

Just want to clarify so people don’t read this and go “OH SNAP, WHITE AND BLACK MATCHA- I GOT TO LOCATE THESE AND BUY THEM!”
There are white, oolong, sheng, black… teas that are ground using the same process as matcha, but they are not matcha teas.

Also: I like my matcha pure or with a teaspoon of milk. Depending on my stock, I may drink matcha daily or just once a week.

I agree, I just said matcha to simplify it all. I cringe when I see people on other forums trying to make matcha ice cream – and proposing that you can just empty some tea bags into a coffee grinder. A lot of people do not know that matcha is grown differently to produce more chlorophyll (hence the beautiful colour) and processed differently.

I find, if I do put anything in my matcha, soy milk adds some nuttiness to the flavour and gives it a smoother mouth feel. I also find myself drinking it 3 times a day occasionally which is probably overload…

I enjoy ceremonial grade matcha. I don’t usually make lattes, though I do want to mix it in some greek yogurt one of these mornings. I like some flavored ones, as well, but prepare them in the traditional method. The only other powdered tea that I’ve had is a powdered houjicha.

I might be a little biased since I own a company which sells a lot of matcha :-P, but I drink it daily, in many ways depending on my mood. My favorite is the traditional way, but I’ll shake it up on orange juice, or make it into a latte, or in a smoothie. So many possibilities! I can’t seem to have a normal day without my morning matcha fix!

I don’t like matcha, but if we have some around I will put a bit in a smoothie. I don’t like green tea, so matcha is out. And as Liquid Proust pointed out matcha actually means a specific thing, but I know the whole world uses it to describe all powdered tea. :)

Just got into matcha this past year thanks to Steepster. Mainly make lattes with almond milk but I’d like to also start trying the traditional way if I get the proper equipment.

Btw we have a matcha ttb running right now if anyone wants to join.
