Pu'erh Question, Scratches Head...

This year I decided I will stock up on teas from 1989,because it was the year I was born, with intentions to share them with friends and age them even more myself.

While looking into all the places I came across something that made me post on here which I didn’t think I would do because it seems pretty straight forward: find teas, spend a lot of money.

Upon searching I found a 1989 sheng/shou blend pu’erh. I have never heard of this. The tea is 70% raw and 30% ripe from 1989…
Any suggestions?

p.s. they also have Japanese pu’erh… http://www.thesteepingroom.com/collections/pu-erh-tea/products/japanese-pu-erh-organic

Darn young people and their cheaper puer for their birth year. Looks like 1981 is super expensive but I found one “well stacked 1981” hell yeah http://www.aliexpress.com/store/product/1981-year-old-raw-Puerh-Tea-400g-raw-Puer-fu-yuan-chang-rare-honey-smell-well/533190_1615415876.html

Anyways, Butiki had a 1989 pu’er and I’m sure people loaded up on it before the shop closed – maybe see if anyone wants to trade/sell it.

im 1981 too! but idk…i havent acquired a taste for puerh yet but do see myself possibly getting there sometime in my life. how can we tell if a puerh is stating the real year or not?

You can almost never be sure of the real year of a puerh although more recent puerh cakes should have a date stamp when the tea was made on them in many cases anyway. I don’t think date stamps were common in 1981 however.

Blending puers is not uncommon. An older tea with a newer tea to give it a ‘head start’, or to reduce the cost by blending a costly older tea with a cheaper younger tea. Usually the older tea is well-known/established/is known to come from a good year. Just as often it’s just two puers with a little something ‘missing’ that compliment each other well (just like classical English blending). I see ’em around.

The description doesn’t state if both teas are from 1989. Could be the case, or it might /just/ be the sheng (I believe shous have a shorter shelf-life?). As the sheng’s “well-aged”, it should be a solid/logical pairing. I don’t see young shengs and shous blended, really (sheng would be a little too green… I don’t see that going well).

I picked up Oollo’s Aged Baozhong and joked with the owner that it was my “birthday tea” (pretty much the reason I was getting it); also 1989.

Right, AJ.
Probably the blend is for compliment each other, but Sheng Pu’er blend with Shou pu’er is really uncommon.

Thinking about blending Shou and Sheng makes me think of a TCM practitioner I met who subscribed to a theory that one should drink Puerh blended this way. The % of each was dependent on your health, sex, and stage of life.

Do you mind posting what others for 1989 you’ve found Liquid Proust? Getting tea from the year you were born sounds interesting, in which case I’m looking for 1989’s too!

I’ve found three oolongs. Two are from private sellers. I’m at work now, but if you are interested I can look at getting a larger amount and splitting it with you. I’ve found sheng and shou as well. I’m still sending out emails and making calls to get the best coverage I can.

Ooh I found a Dong Ding from 1985 https://www.jteainternational.com/tea/dong-ding-1985-0 I think maybe I will change my mind as to which oolong I am aging for my birthday.

But ouch!! My Puerh year is super expensive! http://www.aliexpress.com/store/product/OLD-TEA-1985-year-old-raw-Puerh-Tea-357g-raw-puer-cake-tong-chan-raw-rare/415745_1214208414.html#! curse you young whippersnappers! Or slightly older whippersnappers since your cake is cheaper than mine Oolong Owl :P

This one looks way too green to be from 1967. Not to mention they could easily get fifty times that price for genuine 1967 tea.

I will second AllanK as I have been researching pricing and the sad reality of fake tea being sold…

I guess I should have added a snarky smile, I thought it was a funny posting.

Someone will buy it and be duped. Unless it is the world’s worst puerh ever made but made in 1950. Could be that bad that a 1950 tea is basically worthless.

Yeah, gotta be fake. I looked up my 1962 cakes and was shocked at the low price. http://www.aliexpress.com/item/250g-More-Than-50-Years-Old-PU-ER-Chinese-Health-Care-Puerh-Pu-er-Tea-Pu/1641624870.html

Shu pu’er formented from Sheng Puer, as I know Shu pu’er only start to produce in 70’s, before only Sheng could be found for aged. some good sheng puer aged is expensive, 1 cake of Sheng from 30 years ago could be sold (bidding) for 10000US up in China now…the website you showed are fake for sure.

Does this remind anyone of the Pu-Erh financial bubble we had like 10 years ago?

As far as the Japanese Puerh goes it probably tastes nothing like Yunnan Puerh. In my experience teas from other parts of the world called puerh taste nothing like the ripe puerh they seek to emulate.

If you click the link he claims 1970 not 1990.

Hehe… anyways, Allan have you had a ripe/raw blend? I am curious if it would be worth buying or not. NOT THIS CAKE, but the 1989 one above in my original post.

AllanK said

I’m not sure if I’ve had a ripe/raw blend. I don’t remember. Go for it if you think it is quality.

You’ll be getting some when I get it.

Liquid Proust: We’ve been talking about a trade for a while. I’ve got about 5 grams of the 1989 Butiki. I’ll toss it into the mix. I’ve been meaning to pack up some teas this week, but kept putting it off. I’ll PM you.

PS you young people are lucky. Try 1952 puerh at $3,000/ounce
