Thanks for keeping us updated on these :)
I was curious about Winterwoods as I follow them on IG, now I understand what some of the post were about :)

I thought those pictures looked familiar…

I was going to pledge $15 to Winterwoods but they automatically add $5 for U.S. shipping for the one tea sample, and I am in the same state. Somehow adding shipping costs on top of a donor’s pledge seems like bad business. I wasn’t willing to automatically go to $20.

^ That silk matcha looks so wonderful… however, I haven’t bought matcha since I was in Japan: Is $78 for 40g really high or am I out of touch?

It really depends on quality – While I was in Japan I saw some matcha going for $100+ for 30g. I did try a single bowl, and I do have to say it was pretty magical :)

This looks to be more about the tins than the tea, but the tins are really neat.

A warning before you follow them on Twitter though, they have been filling my feed with Tweets about their Kickstarter to every celebrity imaginable and yesterday it really got annoying.

I ditto Marzipan. I stumbled upon them on Twitter and thought the idea was pretty cool. Then I noticed that it was a mass tweet-a-thon . . . I still may back them. I really like the tins.

It was crazy. Hugh Laurie, Pamela Anderson, Justin Timberlake, Selena Gomez – anyone they could think of and all in individual tweets.

I messaged about the tea. He said it is loose leaf and organic. Teas from Teas, Etc. from different growing regions. Said they had a choice to go with bagged convenience or quality tea and choose quality. They need to be emphasizing that in their project as well as the tins.

I hope you did not just imply that they are reselling ‘Teas Etc’ …

Here is his reply in full:

Thank you for being interested. Really feels great to put in this work and now have your thoughts. The First three tea tins contain teas designed by Beth Johnson at Teas Etc. They are each organic and all from different regions. It’s good tea. One word of caution, it is not bagged. We will probably add the bagged option as a stretch goal later, if we can afford it. We had to chose between tea bags or high tea quality and we went for the high quality tea.

Again, so much thanks!
Johnny

Looks like they are having the owner make tea for them. So, no, they are not sourcing their own teas so in that sense they are reselling Teas Etc but with her full knowledge and cooperation.

Oh wow, I just looked at pictures and prices before reading; shame on me.
This information is listed with a link to Tea Etc’s website on the Kickstarter.

This is good information to have. Thanks Nicole.

I backed this one. I’m a book lover so book inspired tea tins I can’t resist lol

I backed it too, for one book. Probably will get the EG.

I am going to back them, just haven’t decided which one yet.

You should probably go ahead, the free shipping option is 2/3 gone, and then you can decide later. It didn’t ask me which book when I backed it.

Good to know. Officially backing now.

I really wish this one had options I was interested in… https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/2109812992/table-rock-tea-company/description

There doesn’t seem to be much information about their tea sadly :/
Even though it would cost quite a bit to purchase some through the Kickstarter.

So much inside of who I am wants this to be reversed : “over 80% of tea drinkers prefer tea in bags rather than loose”

I would like to know where they get that statistic. Perhaps 80% of casual tea drinkers prefer bagged tea, but I don’t think you’ll get that same percentage if you were to talk to those who drink tea on more than just a casual basis. For those of us who drink tea more than once a day, I think that we prefer loose leaf.

Did they specify a geographic region? I think depending on where we’re talking about that number would be quiet different (like maybe in China, Japan or India?). However, it is true many countries produce CTC grade teas primarily such as Turkey or Kenya, where 90% of tea produced is processed into CTC grade teas for more Westernized consumption…

There are other tea farms in America. I think lots of them are new enough yet that they don’t have the plants of a maturity to start processing at scale. Check out the U.S. League of Tea Growers if you want to see some more info. I’m sure there are many more who are not members of USLTG as well. Unfortunately, USLTG isn’t super public oriented though anyone can join and your membership there helps support US tea in that it helps them educate growers.

I know there is a farm in TX hill country that I think is open for tourism and I am positive that James from Single Origin Teas would love to have tea folks visit his seedlings in FL. He has a whole huge plan for tea tourism, his plants just aren’t really ready. :)

A bit shortsighted.

Tea Gallerie Kickstarter – they got loose leaf tea rewards, but they are looking to kickstarter for tea sodas. San Diego based, I’ve had their teas at local festivals and they were pretty good.

https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1448781758/tea-gallerie-organic-handcrafted-soda

I sent them a message to confirm if it’s correct that at the $20 level, they pick the tea and we don’t. All of the other levels say a tea of our choice. I’m a bit disappointed that they haven’t responded yet (it was this weekend).

I picked the $35 because of that. I’d be curious to see what you find out.
