Puerh Travelling Tea Box - Round 3 Finished

The box is finally ready to go. I’m sorry for the delay but I was waiting for free samples from White2Tea and Essence of Tea. I’m sure you will agree it was worth the wait.

Since I received the box last month I have:
1) Removed teas that are left over from my initial contribution to the box. They’ve been around the country twice and are both stale and unwanted.
2) Removed flavored teas (most of these are left over from the 1st box) and some non-puerh tea.
3) Packaged many of the above two categories into two “newbie packs”. These will be free: no need to add replacement teas for these.
4) Taken roughly 60 grams worth of samples
5) Replaced the samples with the following:
a. W2T 10 g Mid-2000’s Wet Raw (W2T free tea)
b. ChawangShop 13 g 2004 Xinfu Yiwu Zheng Shan Lao Shu Bing
c. TuochaTea 10 g 2011 Raw Yubang Silver Bud
d. ChawangShop 12 g 2011 Chawangpu Baoshan Yeshengcha – Purple Wild Arbor Raw
e. W2T 13 g 2006 Yunhai Nannuo
f. Verdant 10 g 2004 Yiwu Wild Picked Sheng

6) Received large samples from White2Tea and Essence of Tea (see my next post). Remember to review these teas. Paul and David have been incredibly generous; the least we can do is write reviews.
7) These generous donations have more than doubled the size of the box. As a result, I am going to implement the following special deal for this round. Everyone may take 5 grams of EoT tea, 5 grams of W2T shou and 10 grams of W2T sheng WITHOUT REPLACING THE TEA!. Of course you can take more, replacing it gram for gram as usual. However, please limit yourself to 5 grams for each of these teas so that everyone can have a chance to try them.

I will be mailing the box to Haveteawilltravel tomorrow.

Is there a list of what’s in there? If over looked it someplace I’m sorry

Dr Jim said

I’m still doing inventory. Will post later this evening.

Grill said

Ah ok. Thank you sir. The name are in shipping order on the original post right, so I’ll be second I’m guessing

Dr Jim said

That’s right. Send your address to HaveteaWilTravel in the next week and make sure you are following HaveteaWilTravel and Liquid Proust (at a minimum; if you follow everyone on the list you get to read all the reviews!).

Address has been received :)

I’m caving to another YS order so either I can drop 100g of

I love the wrapper on the second cake. I wanna chill and drink tea with the leafy goat. That said some people find new ripe puerh to be a bit tough to drink due to still very active fermentation

I believe 2012 Impression was in a previous round of this TTB. I’m not sure if there’s some still in there though.

Dr Jim said

Awkward Soul / Oolong Owl  is correct. I started the box with some 2012 Impression. There is 2014 Impression in the current box. If you can be patient, I’ll add some 2012 from my personal stash with your name on it. You’re third on the list so it shouldn’t take too long to arrive. I’m not wild about the Impression; it’s definitely an everyday drinker, but good enough in that role and certainly a good price.

2012 Impression just got the boot.
Now it’s the 2015 ripe vs http://www.yunnansourcing.us/store/index.php?id_product=360&controller=product
only because Ryan said it said Green Oolong tasting Sheng… are you kidding me?

jschergen said

The 2015 Ripe is pretty good, but still needs more time.

Agreed re: impression. Daily drinking stuff right now.

However, seeing this list makes me realize something: I need to put aside a few hundred dollars while I’m sampling these because I know that once I find what I’m looking for, cakes will be purchased right away.

Dr Jim said

The list changes fairly dramatically. Most of these are only enough for one or two sessions. I didn’t post, but there were 5 teas that I finished off, in addition to the pruning I did. The good news is that there is a lot of tea out there. The bad news is that probably two thirds of these are no longer available.

Grill said

Awesome contributions from both EoT and white2tea. I’ll be sure to throw in some nice stuff for people to try as well. So you can take say 5 grams total of EoT tea or 5 grams each?

I see several things that I’ve been dying to try. I will fer sure be swapping it with pieces from my own collection :D This is going to be fantastic!

Oh hell yeah that looks good

Well, the TTBs I’ve been a part of has worked like this.

Each person post what they took and what they added on the thread. It works out pretty well.

Dr Jim said

Grill: I knew I was going to confuse people. Take up to 5 grams each of as many teas as you want to try. Total up the amount of tea you took, then subtract up to 20 grams for the EoT and W2T teas. This is the total amount you should add.

LP: Yes. I’m asking everyone to post what they finish off (not necessarily all the teas you tried) as well as a total weight you tried, plus all of the teas (including weight of each) that you added.

There is no need to add more than you take. I think the current weight is probably a bit high, which is one reason I added the rule about the W2T and EoT samples. (The other reason is that they provided the samples because they want people to try the teas and this will encourage you do do so.)

So 5g of each tea from W2T and EoT, but it can not exceed 20g total from each company?

mrmopar said

I’m going to intercept and steal this box… I will post a reward for where I can pick it up…… Just kidding. You are going to enjoy the h*** out of this selection all involved. Seriously about the reward……..Y’all know how to get me…

Dr Jim said

You had your chance. Maybe next time.

We’ve been fortunate. This is about the 7th box I’ve been involved in and it is just amazing. Every round has been better than the last. Mostly thanks to EoT and W2T for their very generous help. But last time Whispering pines made a big contribution (and there’s still some of their tea left, though it’s running low) and before that Butiki provided a good jump start as well as a few other Steepsterites helped make up for my somewhat thin start (together they took the box from about 20 ounces to more like 40).

mrmopar said

I didn’t want to ‘horn in’ on this as I think this is a great chance for people to try some of the things I have tried. You got some good tea from good vendors to share. I think a new crop of drinkers is on the horizon from this. I may toss you some stuff if you do another one Dr Jim. You have done great on this box to share with our drinkers.

I feel like a kid waiting for Christmas.

Dr Jim said

That’s how I felt today when the EoT box arrived (as well as a gong-fu tea tray I ordered a few weeks ago). The W2T box last week was even more amazing, just because it was so big.

Grill said

Jim is taking all the vendor tea and running for the border. The box is just a ploy :p

hahahah gets all our hopes up and then bolts it…

Dr Jim said

It’s actually all boxed up and addressed. Should go into the mail tomorrow afternoon. The box isn’t as big as you’d think: I really crammed it in, and most of the teas left over from the second round are less than 10 grams.

awesome :D

I don’t know about everyone else, but this is probably the most exciting TTB in the world of Steepster…

I have a rules suggestion. So the people at the end of the line get to try the Essence of Tea and Whit2Tea teas limit tea to 4g per tea.

Dr Jim said

I weighed the EoT packages and they were all about 56 grams (excluding packaging). There are 11 people in line so that works out to about 5 grams per person. For the W2T teas, a lot of folks have already tried some of the teas. There were only 3 that I hadn’t tried before so with only one or two exceptions I believe that there will still be tea available for those at the end of the line.

To be frank, I was more concerned that not enough people would take these teas, so tried the policy of non-replacement for at least one sample of each tea type for everyone.

Hmm…sounds good!!! Would just like to clarify some details to be sure and please correct as needed:

1. We can get 5g each of the 50+g samples from W2T and EoT making sure that there is enough for the remaining participants to get their 5g as well. And 10g for the 100g samples, yes? We pledge to review the teas good points and refrain from disparaging remarks.

2. For the other samples, we can take as much as we can as long as we replace them with an equal amount of tea.

But may I suggest that we limit sampling of each of the other teas to 5g or so as well so that more people will get to try whatever teas there are? It is kinda sad to see a tea that you wanted to try and not be able to try it later on. I know the amounts are super limited so this is just a small way to extend the sampling. (Adjust accordingly like if there’s 8g, it can still be split to 2 4g samples and if there’s 14g then it can be 4-5-5. 13g can be split 4-4-5.) I think everyone will be happier to have more samples to try..unless majority need a higher minimum to be happy with a sample :)

3. We don’t need to write how much of each tea we have taken but we do need to note it and write the total amount taken for sampling. Then we write the amount of each tea that we add. We can add as many teas as we want as long as we don’t put in more than 1oz/30g of each tea (but I suppose we can add more if the rest of the people in line want to get more of it since what we are trying to avoid are big amounts of orphan tea). And oh yeah, write down teas that are finished off :)

I think I will have to be content with 2g of each listed tea just so I can try most of these with the amount that I am able to put in lol.

Dr Jim said

Re #1: We want honest reviews! If you have negative comments you should say so. Feel free to qualify: I will sometimes say I don’t like a tea because of the style, but try to evaluate the tea for someone who likes the style. You also aren’t required to give a numerical rating. Reviews aren’t absolutely required: I sometimes am ambivalent about a tea, or just can’t think of anything to say.

Your second paragraph of #2 is more or less how we did it before, but we have something like 70 teas, so I’m not worried about variety. Also, People have been good about replacing teas with a wide variety of quality teas, so even though someone near the end of the list won’t have access to half of the teas I listed above, there will be lots of new teas that are just as good.

I’ve tried to be as flexible as possible. I personally need only 2 grams to taste a tea, which lets me try 25 or 30 teas without having to add a pound of replacement tea. However, lots of puerh drinkers regularly use 7 or even 10 grams. We’re already putting a cramp in their style, but folks in the previous rounds seemed to manage pretty well taking 4 to 5 grams.

yssah said

ok. good about the honest/balanced reviews :) i myself do not like to put numbers but find the numbers that others have put in to be very helpful except for when somebody puts in a hundred for a tea with fishy flavor lol.

wait, reviews are still required for the company samples but we give an allowance of 2 or 3 teas that we can skip on reviewing, did i get that right?

Uniquity said

Phew, I am not participating but I do read reviews and I was briefly very concerned that only positive comments would be made. I know that happens, but it’s not a practice I support. Look forward to seeing reviews. :)
