Sheng Recommendations?

The most important thing for sheng is to brew it gongfu style with short steeps. Western style doesn’t work very well for sheng.

Yunnan sourcing and white2tea. White2tea selection is smaller and less daunting. Wide range of tea and prices at both. My advice is sample like crazy early on. Don’t overly invest in a singular tea till you narrow down what you like. I still haven’t purchased more than a single cake of anything and I’ve drank through hundreds of shengs in the last 8ish months

I’ve not used White2tea, but have been a YS customer for a couple of years. The selection is quite daunting but they do offer samples on many of their teas, which helps greatly. Perhaps looking at the reviews here on Steepster, filtering on a given vendor and tea type, will help narrow down what you’d like to sample.

Totally agree with Grill on this! I have so many samples I’ve lost count, and just recently purchased only my third ever full cake/brick in about the last 6 months. And I only did that out of fear of the vendor running out, lol.

I need to order one of those again. It got one in my first round of samples from white2tea and brewed it up immediately. It went completely over my head and I think I just wasn’t ready for something like that yet. I’m sure I’d love it now.

I just pulled the trigger on the White2Tea Basics Puer Tea Sample Set. Now it comes down to just waiting on it. I hate waiting!

That’s one of the best deals going for someone new to sheng. 400 grams with some variety and only 40 bucks with free shipping. To expand further on what AllanK said earlier in the thread, gongfu is really the best way to with sheng imo. Start with a gaiwan and preferably a white one. You can use the lid to push down the the leaves and see the color of the tea. That makes getting consistent steeps a lot easier when you start. After a while it will become automatic and you’ll get better at judging the temp and steep time on taste.

If you haven’t checked out teadb yet I’d spend some time reading and watching stuff there. The videos and write ups are straight forward, unbiased and educational
