JalamTeas - Thoughts?

So, I went to the Toronto Tea Festival and met Jeff from JalamTeas. I only talked to him for a few minutes but I instantly became someone fascinated by him. I think I’m going to try and find his book.
Anyways, I am itching to subscribe to their monthly tea club even if I only do it for a couple of months. I have one of the cakes from them and I’m probably going to try it today or tomorrow (depending how things go). But I’m curious if anyone else has tried their teas and what they think of the monthly subscription??

I have heard good things about them. I think Hobbes has reviewed some on his blog as well. I have wanted to join this club as well.

I tried the 2014 Nannuo Summer Harvest Sheng in a tea box and really liked it (score of 88). See the review here:

I reviewed a number of Jalam Teas but have not subbed. I find most of their stuff is young sheng. Go through last year and they only did 3 shou and the oldest is 2013, but most were 2014 and 2015.

If you like young sheng then it is a good match. If you want a lot more variety I’d go with Yunnan Sourcing or White2tea’s club.

I just received a DM on Instagram from a woman telling me how great they are. I guess she saw the words puerh tea in my instagram and figured I must belong to this club. I would be more interested if they did more shou as I prefer shou to sheng. I have heard good things about this club though.

I have been a member for nearly a year. I think their teas are really fantastic. True, they are all young, with about 3/4 sheng and 1/4 shu. But I have no problem with that. These are very high quality teas, right up there with vendors like Tea Urchin. The teas seem to be well sourced and pesticide free (though they don’t test). I have enjoyed every single tea I have tried from the club. I cannot say enough good things about them, I am a big fan.

I wish you hadn’t started this thread. I just spent 20 minutes looking at the Jalam website and it looks REALLY hard to resist.

I’ve subscribed, and its pretty good tea. The price point is fair, and it helps lead to understanding tea production areas. A year club subscription will give you a mental map of the progression of puerh as you move around Yunnan. I have yet to try any of their Shou, so I can’t add anything on that; however, I’ve had a fair amount of their Sheng and it is mostly Summer harvest and very young and fresh. The tastes are usually bitter and strong tea that is not meant for the light stomach. My favorite thing about Jalam teas is that all their cakes are perfect for long term storage. They all have enough kick and power that I believe they’ll hold up to some nice storage. I have a bunch squirreled away.

I agree with you. I subscribed for 3 months. Sadly my stomach likes mostly aged sheng. So I had to stop the subscription :(

I’ve been receiving tea from them for several years. It is mostly young sheng but very good quality. As others have said, it’s a great way to learn about puerh because you get to taste around the different mountains and villages. I’ve written about quite a few of them on my blog. You can see them here:

also: if you’re in Canada, which you are, it’s the best bang for your buck considering that you can pay in CAD dollars and shipping is cheap. I’m really digging their tea club.
