The current favourite tea thread

We all have a current favourite tea(s) of the moment dont we. The one you keep going back to because it has the nom factor.

Mine is Liquid Proust Peachy Elixir #9. luckily I got the last of it. ive been having a couple of cups a day, need to slow down a bit else im going to drink it all too quickly

edit* I meant like, your current fave or go-to of what you are drinking now, last month I was drinking a lot of wild arbor assamica, for example. Not my all time fave, which is ya shi dan cong.

My favorite ripe puerh is the 2008 Song of Chhi Tse that I got from Berylleb King Tea along with the 2010 Golden Needle White Lotus which I bought from Yunnan Sourcing. The thing about the Song of Chi Tse is it has completely cleared. Yunnan Sourcing also sells this under a different name. I just bought one of theirs to see if their storage of the tea was as good as Berylleb’s storage. It is rare for a 2008 tea to have cleared completely and have no earthy taste.

ive been drinking the 2014 golden needle white lotus, and usually I try and go through the teas evenly, but this one ive been wanting to drink a lot of. Whatever the recipe is, its a nice one I agree

AllanK said

I can’t tell you the exact recipe but generally speaking Golden Needle White Lotus is the highest grade ripe of Menghai Tea Factory. So much so that there are a dozen knock off brands that call themselves Golden Needle White Lotus or something very similar. The knock off are not as good. I have the 2014 also, bought it off Aliexpress last year. I have yet to try it. I’ve been meaning to locate it and try it. I just bought the 2013 in the Yunnan Sourcing sale. It just goes up in value if you have an unbroken cake. I think I paid $60 for the 2010. Now if you can find it you will probably pay $110 or more. I originally bought three of the 2010 and have two unbroken cakes.

The 2005 Golden Needle White Lotus was the first and currently goes for an obscene amount of money on Taobao. I think that is the only place it is available.

Liquid Proust sent me a sample of the 2013 Golden Needle White Lotus, and it blew my doors off. I immediately ordered a cake from GoStreetShop on eBay (was cheaper than YS, and of course I ordered it right before the sale, because that happens to me pretty much every time.)

AllanK said

Didn’t know Streetshop88 carried the 2013 Golden Needle White Lotus. In my experience they sell some good tea but it is not usually name brand stuff.

curlygc said

Oh, nevermind! My mistake – I got the white tea from GoStreetShop. It was the same day I ordered the Golden Needle White Lotus from King Tea on Aliexpress. It’s why I keep confusing where I got them!

AllanK said

They seem to be going under a new name, it’s no longer just GoShopStreet or Streetshop88, it’s now also Goartea. They also have a store now on Amazon under that name.

curlygc said

Oh wow. I wish you hadn’t told me that. ;-)

Hello there, I’m known to make people spend money…

Noooooooooooooo!

Yesssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssss!
The 2014 is only $45 ;)
I’m sure AllanK and I would easily do a three way split on the 08’ to see if we want our own cake :)

curlygc said

I’ll go in on a split if you do it :-)
But… I’d be shocked if AllanK didn’t already have his own 2008 cake!

AllanK said

I never bought the 2008 cake but I do have the 2010. I may get around to buying it. King Tea has it for a good price. Someone was selling it on EBay, maybe Berylleb, I don’t remember but they wanted $110.

AllanK said

A tong of this will cost $841 of which $321 is shipping. I know it doesn’t cost $321 to ship a tong of tea but change the quantity to seven on that tea and that is what you get. King Tea does not have good shipping when you go over the 2kg E Packet limit.

AllanK said

Although I know for a fact you can get King Tea to ship a tong for less. I bought a tong of 2013 Chen Sheng Hao Snake Year Ripe from him last year and didn’t pay anything like $321.

My favorite tea period is 1989 Shan Lin Xi, but that is not a daily drinker…
I’ve been trying out new hei cha and dan cong as they both have aspects that appeal to me but mostly they do not, thus I am on a search for one that makes me sip it and go: how do you critique something that cannot be better?

Rasseru said

2015 lao cong ya shi and mi lan AAA from jingteashop. trust me they are fantastic.

they last the steeps also

I have a heads up on some good stuff from teahabitat, but i need to save up, they are quite expensive

mrmopar said

LP have you tried the HeiCha that W2T had in the monthly box yet?

Rasseru said

I also sorta meant, not your favourite tea period, but whats your current go-to fave

AllanK said

Did not know that the W2T monthly tea had Hei Cha. Haven’t received my box yet, expecting it tomorrow. How was it? I find Hei Cha to be hit or miss. While I can honestly say I like most puerh I try not so for Hei Cha.

mrmopar said

I think it was Decembers box.

I’m not in the W2T club… I’ve been given a few odds and ends from people though. I’m currently transitioning from the monthly GTH to W2T.

AllanK said

One of the ones I sent you was from the W2T club. The 2005 sheng.

I’ve been drinking through so many of my older teas lately that I haven’t really been able to reflect on this lately. The only category of Tea that I have an absolute favourite is in green tea. I could happily ony drink Rizhao xueqing green tea (preferable pre-qingming) for the rest of my life. The rest is difficult. I prefer Fujian black’s over Yunnan’s. Cycle through favourites in Indian subcontinent Teas. I love dancong’s and Yancha but also really love green very biting floral oolongs and I don’t yet have a favourite in puerh’s.

Ubacat said

I so agree about the Rizhao tea. One of my favourite greens. Verdant’s Laoshan green is very good too.

AllanK said

I have heard of Rizhao green tea. Where do you get it? I don’t remember any of the sellers I’ve dealt with carrying it.

yyz said

Hey Allen

I’ve bought it off aliexpress from several sellers over the years. Sometimes short lived shops are opened by farmers to offer part of their crop to foreign markets. There are
a couple of stores with offerings that I haven’t tried yet. Having said that my go to source for it is the Han Xiang Ecological store because the seller consistently picks very nice Teas each year. He has really nice green and black Teas and cycles sales on a regular basis.

The 2015 Rizhao he recommended to me was
http://s.aliexpress.com/BzuUfYzI

He usually has a Rizhao in his 99 cent sample collection. The seller is pretty interesting and is willing to share his knowledge if you are patient with the language barrier. My only caveats are that parcel arrival can take some time using regular China post.

Tea trekker brings it in in the spring sometime in April in limited quantities as well. https://www.teatrekker.com/rizhao-xueqing

I was going to recommend another seller who I know is a producer associated with one of the two early growing cooperatives but her store is on hiatus at the moment. Her prices are higher but you can purchase from several different harvests in 50g quantities.

AllanK said

I might have to try that Rizhao from Aliexpress, that’s an excellent price. And I’ve bought from Tea Ttrekker before. They are quite good but expensive.

AllanK said

The same Aliexpress seller sends up a red flag for his Puerh tea, fifty year old tea for only $8.44. A little too good to be true.

AllanK said

That’s more expensive than Yangqinghao. Are you buying it?

yyz said

I wouldn’t touch the Puerh either. The black Teas and green Teas tend to be very good. The Fujian blacks are from an associated Tea factory and a lot of the Yunnan’s are from a Tea factory selling on Chinese alibaba. He tends to offer them at prices reasonable close to the small volume wholesale list price.

@AllanK…. no no no, but I have wanted a white wuyi for some time :/

Ubacat said

I get mine from Han Xiang Ecological Tea too. I may have to order more since mine is not so good anymore. It’s gotten a bit too old.

AllanK said

Yeah, it’s a very good price and it seems to be on sale for a few more hours. But you have to order 250g of it.

yyz said

Allan he has sales pretty regularly. If it doesn’t stay on sales price it will return to it in the next 2-3 weeks.

More sellers will have offerings in the next month or so as the first harvests not under green house usually happen within the next couple weeks.

AllanK said

Well I bought that Rizhao. I’ll know how good it is in about two weeks depending on how fast he ships.

mrmopar said

LP don’t buy any Dayi that you can’t see how the back is wrapped. It is funny the store you linked the shou is higher than the sheng!
RED FLAG!
Sheng is always more expensive it seems.
YYZ you just haven’t found the “right” puerh yet. When you do you will be hooked….. Remember I told you so when the day comes.. :P

yyz said

MRMOPAR, I do like Puerh (Sheng more than Shou, but Shou is growing on me). I just haven’t explored them enough to have a favourite:-)

mrmopar said

I see a pu addiction in the future I do….. :)

Rasseru said

this is how I started, sheng was easier to get into than shou.

Now i’ve got a thing for it. The golden needle white lotus is the first ripe I want to buy a cake of. That stuff is lish

yyz said

:-). I fear so at some point. For a non-addict I already have @1400g of Sheng and 900g of shou so I fear I am well on my way.

mrmopar said

I started with shou and now have a fascination with sheng. I got to get back to some shou. Just 2300 grams? You will be out before you know it.

Rasseru said

Youve got more than me. At least you are aware and not in the denial stage :D

mrmopar said

I wont even think about adding mine up. 2300 grams is about 7 cakes or so. Don’t look at my stash.

yyz said

Lol! It’s just the rest of my Tea collection that I’m coming to terms with.

Ubacat said

Allan, if it’s the Rizhao you bought and it’s too much I can split it with you. I found 250g is too much at once too and now the Rizhao I’ve got is old.

I am loving the Jin Guan Yin I just got in YS’s first shipment of their all oolong club. A mouthful of flowers and nectar. I’m heavily considering picking up a hefty amount.
