I have terrible water. Is there anything I can do?

Sometimes my water supply smells like a swimming pool. Always it is loaded with dissolved carbonates.

A Brita pitcher is useless, maybe worse than useless.

I am looking at Zen Water and Santevia countertop units and wondering if they are any good. Does anyone have any experience with these?

I’ve had good luck with my Zero Water filter, but it sounds like my water isn’t nearly as bad as yours. I have no experience with Zen Water or Santevia. Depending on how bad your water is, you might want to consider just buying spring water by the gallon at your local grocery store. Really bad water can cause you to go through filters really quickly if you use a filtration system.

Zero Water works well for me too. Sometimes I still use spring water too.

I have a similar problem at work. Water quality is terrible and while filtering improves the taste of water, tea steeped in it tastes very flat. So I have to resort to bottled spring water – not purified or distilled – to make tea at the office.

I have really bad city water as well. The brita pitcher helped with the taste most of the time, but sometimes when they flush out the system it doesn’t help at all. And the water was still too hard, so cleaning the lime scale out of my kettle became a chore. I ended up buying a tabletop dispenser for $30 that holds 5 gallon bottles of water that I purchase at Walmart (the brand is Primo). So far it’s been ok, though I’m still on the fence about how it affects my shou and need to do more experimenting. Sheng and oolong is good though. Anyway, it was either that or periodic deliveries from Culligan. They have very good water, but it’s way more expensive and they have contracts and all that jazz I didn’t want to deal with. The Primo five gallon bottle is about $6, which lasts me about a week. I use bottled water at the office too.
