Do you drink alcoholic beverages?

Nope, no alcohol. Couldn’t imagine having to split my tea buget anyway.

Haha yeah, that would be hard!

I worked in France for 10 years and now splurge on French wine by mail from time to time. Bought a wine frig from Sears. Sadly, I am a red drinker but can’t stand American reds. So I order French reds in good years and malbecs and dry whites otherwise.

I like to make cocktails or drink flavored vodka on ice! My tastes in booze are very similar to my tastes in tea actually – I like dessert-y flavors, with some complexity, occasionally with a spicy or smokey element.

I do drink lager in pubs with my friends, less wine because its too acidic.

I love cocktails though. I find them interesting like complex tea

Nope! Unless you count communion at church. (I know most churches use grape juice nowadays but mine is, like, super old-fashioned and a little eccentric.)

ETA: And that gets kind of awkward when you go to a conservative Christian college and when you get back each year you have to answer a questionnaire that says “have you done illegal drugs OR consumed ANY alcohol OR committed immorality since last semester? We want to know so we can kick you out.” (Or words to that effect, all in one yes/no question. Dumbest thing ever) and you answer yes and then you get a nice little visit from the dorm “counselor” . . . :P :P :P

Ha! Can’t even imagine… I’ve never had communion wine, but I wager I’ve been way more messed up on good tea then anyone with that amount of alcohol in their system. Funny how our churches, governments, cultures, etc deem some drugs are ok, and some as immoral….

I totally hear you. I married into a Catholic Italian family. Not only do Catholics always use wine at Mass, my husband and in-laws often have a glass of wine with dinner. So when I go to the doctor and they ask, “how much alcohol do you consume in a week?” I feel kind of awkward saying four or five drinks, since for me that’s a drink with dinner most nights, but I know it could be assumed that I’m going out and getting drunk every weekend.

@ 9 Thousand Things, it does seem kind of arbitrary sometimes, doesn’t it? I’m curious how you get messed up from tea, though; I always thought “tea drunk” was just a figure of speech.

@rosebudmelissa, haha yeah that does sound awkward! My inlaws have wine at Thanksgiving and Christmas, apparently, so I’m still getting used to that. I’m a bit wary of casual drinking myself (for reasons related to stuff), but they generally just have one glass or so, so it doesn’t seem to do any harm. And I certainly don’t agree with my alma mater that drinking a glass of wine makes them all hopeless reprobates or that it’s on par with doing illegal drugs, lol!

@seniblyscript Ahh…well tea is certainly a drug (def: “a medicine or other substance which has a physiological effect when ingested or otherwise introduced into the body.”)

The 3 culprits in my getting “messed up” from tea are 1) Caffeine 2) L-thiamine 3) Qi. The first 2 being the only scientifically accepted ones, though most tea drinkers accept the third even without being able to explain it – perhaps just a combo of the first 2 with other active elements in tea, perhaps just the natural energy of tea like everywhere else (google “cha qi” for more….).

All three of these, in differing amounts / combos have made me everything from feeling similar to a light marijuana high, to a meditative trance like state, to a stammering fool unable to put words together right, to a thousand word a minute roadrunner look-a-like, and all kinds of in between….

Tea Drunk, is not like alcohol drunk in a literal sense, but it’s real!

@ 9 Thousand Things Okay, that makes sense. Do you notice that different types of tea have different effects? I generally try to avoid “caffeine highs” because they tend to just make me anxious and miserable, but usually that’s when I’ve had really a lot of caffeine like with coffee or if I’ve been drinking a ton of matcha or something. And then I’m miserable for a while until I figure out what’s wrong with me (cause usually I’m too busy to notice at first). Sometimes I can get myself to feel more energetic by drinking black tea but that’s about all, lol. Maybe I just need to drink more tea? That’s the answer to everything, right? :P

I mostly like white and dessert wines.

I tend to like the sweeter, fruitier drinks. Fruity cocktails, sangria, cream sherry, some hard ciders, white zinfandel. I also like most red wine, which my Italian in-laws often drink with dinner, Burgundy in particular. Although I like the sweeter drinks, I prefer a certain complexity of flavor in my alcoholic beverages. If it’s too sweet or simple, I’d rather just drink juice. I’m really missing alcoholic beverages at the moment, since I’m expecting a baby in just over a week!

I didn’t drink alcoholic drinks for a very long time, in fact, I called myself a TEA-totaler. But recently, I’ve started to try different drinks which started mostly as some experimentation for when I’d do taste tests for my teas. (For example, I wanted to know what Rumchata tasted like before I blended/taste tested my Cease & Desist reblend.)

As for what I like to drink – I’m with @rosebudmelissa, I prefer sweeter, fruitier drinks. I like fuzzy navels and my newest favorite mixed cocktail is Bahama Mama. I also like those hard lemonades and similar type drinks. Another thing I’ve grown quite fond of is the hard root beer and hard ginger ales.

I’ve never been big on beer and that is something that hasn’t changed. I have tried a few beers, ales, IPAs and stouts and usually what happens is this: I find a really unique flavor of stout or IPA and I say, “ohh, that sounds interesting.” We buy it. I take a sip of it. I make a face that translates into “this is horrible.” My husband takes a sip and makes a similar face. The rest of the bottle goes down the drain.

Since my son-in-law really seems to like these beverages, we’ve decided that from now on when we’re going to be sampling these beverages, that we’d bring them over to their house, take our sip and then let him finish the bottle rather than toss it since it seems a shame to be wasting a nearly full bottle of beer that costs between 5 – 10 dollars.

I’m a big fan of peach schnapps and cranberry juice. My in-laws made a really nice punch at Easter that was lemonade, a blush wine, and a bit of strawberry vodka. I only had a taste, but it was really good.

My husband really likes the dark, malty beers. I often try a sip, but there’s only been a couple I’ve wanted more than a sip of.

@52teas, if you don’t finish a beer and if your SIL is not around to drink it, even flat, a beer adds something to chili, stew or pot roast.

@Whiteantlers: That’s excellent advice, I hadn’t thought of that. Something I’ll keep in mind for the future!

It’s also good in bread.

And people use it in batter when breading fish . . .

Or most beef dishes…I added a half of a beer to Shepards Pie last year, I am so not a beer drinker, but omg it added alot of depth to the pie.

I tried alcohol, and realized I don’t really care for it. I’d much rather have tea :)

That’s how it’s done!
