Hi! I just wanted to introduce myself. I’m fairly new to loose-leaf tea, only been drinking it this way for about two years. I’ve just started to explore the world of puerh tea too! (So far only tried a couple of samples of shou.) I’d love to learn more, especially about puerh, and any suggestions on which to try are welcome! Thank you :)

Lizz sorry nobody got back to you! I can help point to directions, but I don’t have a variety myself; like the average item in the US, my stuff was made in China.

Hello! Yep, we have people toodling around here who have the equivalent of a PhD in Cuppanomics. Lots to discover.

thanks – been in a bit of a tea ordering frenzy to get a stock chez moi before I arrive home.
bought ten assorted nice teas from theteamakers.com in London and just yesterday had a nice surprise cash windfall I wasn’t expecting…
Went seriously loopy and bought 3 cakes + 20 gramme samples from EoT!
2000 Kai Yuan green label, 2000 green peacock and 2007 Qi sheng gu.
I have no idea what to try first or in order – Any advice from the learned ones appreciated.

This might be an unpopular answer, but if you’ve got smaller gaiwans or sampling cups, try them all at once. One thing that has really helped me with tastings is pairing two or three teas at once, particularly if they’re from similar regions, seasons, or years. This really emphasizes subtle differences you might not pick up on if tasting by themselves. Anyway, that’s just my opinion.

Sounds like good advice TT – got no teaWARE AT ALL. will make my first order of business a trip to Chinatown.

I am also a Puerh virgin so maybe three at once will be a bit confusing…. Nah – I’ll try your sugestion Thanks.

Rasseru said

oh, yeah you need a gaiwan asap. dont get one over 100ml, smaller amounts, more variety & many steeps is honestly best.

Fitz said

Will do – China-Town is first port of call tomorrow. bound to find a cheap starter kit there I would think. (might be asking for instructions though)

A few small cups would work for side-by-side tastings. Long term, I’d invest in a good Yixing teapot if you are into pu-erhs. They make nice Christmas presents, too.

Timing is essential with all Chinese teas. I ended up writing my own app to time the steeping process, but a regular timer app would do almost as well.

I’m going to work through the leaf teas I bought during next week then move on to the puerh week after.

Hello! I’m excited to talk about tea! My current favorites are dark roasted oolongs and I’ve been trying out puerhs

MrQuackers said

I have one of these. Sadly it doesn’t get drunk. A most mysterious tea.

mrmopar said

@MrQuackers you should do a session of it sometime.

I was looking at roasted Oolong on Wu yi origins the other day. had it in my basket then got sidetracked unfortunately

Rasseru said

wuyi origin is a good safe bet for more oxidised oolongs. I like their stuff. their ya shii was good, and they have a new song zhong which is a style everyone should try if they have the money for it.

I’m also pretty new around here. I love bug-bitten teas and green oolongs, though I drink a lot of black tea as well. (I need to rebalance my cupboard to contain more oolong and less hongcha, but those oolongs keep disappearing!) Unbelievably, I’ve yet to start drinking puerh.

Looking forward to participating in the community!

Rasseru said

Theres a bit of an art to finding puerh that suits your palate, but it’s great when that has been found.

I Drink all oolongs, sheng puerh & white tea mainly. With a bit of heicha, Darjeeling & green on the side
