Do you have any sort of tool that prevents you from oversteeping?

I struggle with this consistently.

If you mean a gadget to prevent oversteeping the only thing I can suggest is get a timer and do shorter steeps. Are you brewing western style? Or gongfu style? Either way just cut down your steep times. Like I said a timer may help. If you have a smart phone there are about twenty five different apps.

Time, amount of tea used, temperature and amount of water are all factors.

A scale, measuring spoon, measuring cup, thermometer and timer are all helpful.

And something to shew away distractions.

Also experience helps. Think about cooking a vegetable, because that is what tea is essentially. If you cook something too long, it will just get mushy and lose flavour.

In terms of experience, learning to brew green teas will help you with other varieties.

Especially flavour wise.

I oversteep a lot. Whenever it gets too bad I use the timer on my phone to set an alarm. Worse problem is putting a kettle on the stove and then forgetting it, which is why I now use an electric kettle with thermal shut-down.

I use my phone timer often, or count in my head as a form of meditation. 1-5 seconds inhale, 6-10 seconds exhale.

If you overbrew you can add more water to get to where you wanna be, right in the glass or cup.

It may seem pedantic but I use a timer for all my tea sessions. It ensures consistency and eliminates guesswork. This little guy is cheap and works great: http://amzn.to/2b2ZFf6
