New to Tea world, want suggestions

Hello Everyone
I am glad to find this great group of tea lovers and love reading discussions and reviews.
I am new to tea world , previously I have been into sampling craft beers and wine tasting and now the tea bug have bitten me. Currently I am a student so I cannot afford very pricey tea . But I want to try different varieties of tea to develop my taste and senses towards tea. My previous experience with tea has been in Darjeeling , drinking the queen of teas darjeeling . Recently I got few teas from Harney and sons, da hong pao , formosa oolong , and their earl grey supreme. I want to try puer tea that will be my first experience , So i would like some enlightened souls to guide me what should I start with , my aim to develop the taste and also to understand nuances and subtle flavours and change in texture . My experience with beer and wine may help .

So please give me suggestions on low to moderate priced pu’er tea (Sheng )

We can keep this thread for other souls who are newbie to this great world

We have a reasonably priced shou Puerh for $15 at www.pandabrewtea.com. As well as a variety of other Loose Leaf Tea.

I should also mention that the steeping time is pretty short. 3 seconds for the first steep, and then keep doubling it for the next steeps. You can do this about 20 times. You get a lot of bang for your buck with Puerh.

Thanks for the information I will definitely give a look , do you also have sheng Puerh ?

I do but it is expensive. If you pm me your name and address I’ll send you a couple samples on the house.

Probably the best places to start are Yunnan sourcing tea of the month club (Raw or raw/ripe combo).

White2tea basics raw and basics ripe 40$ each for 400 grams.

Crimson Lotus What is puerh sampler about 20$

Bana tea’s Ripe and Raw sampler pack, about 25$ each.

Verdant tea, 5 teas for 5$ (combination of teas)

teavivre shou puerh mini toucha sampler 15$ for 200 grams.

Cant go wrong with any of those. Ive actually tried Verdant, Teavivre, crimson lotus, and waiting on shipmets from yunan sourcing and white2tea. I plan to try bana’s tea sampler once I have a big enough order for free shipping.

Thank you Ken , these are definitely great leads, ordered from verdant the sampler , and will order from crimson lotus too.
There is tea of month club with verdant tea too , which one will be better Yunan Sourcing or Verdant ?
Cheers^^

Im honestly not sure yet, Im getting my first package from yunnan sourcing today, and Verdant tea next week. Since I need to rest the pu’erh for about a week, it will be about a week before I start post tasting notes, maybe a bit longer as I want to wait for the month to be over before spoiling it for anyone else in the club who’s teas are delayed. Though one thing to consider Verdant tea’s is a variety of tea, and Yunnan sourcing has multiple clubs for variety, Sheng/Shou, sheng only, Oolong, green and premium style.

I will also post a more detailed review of the white2tea basics pack when it gets here next week. But until then for your reading enjoyment..http://steepster.com/Kcen/posts/352634

They were out of stock on the what is pu’erh but it might be worth dropping them a line.

Thanks Ken , this have been a great help to start , I should also get yixing clay pot , I have ceramic gongfu style pot not yixing but i think yixing pot will enhance the flavor profile

Yixing is more important for aged sheng and ripe than for raw sheng. I still havent been able to decipher what the correct pot is for raw yixing.

Do a search for a recent thread on cheap Yixing, they have ebay links for ebay, Tribute tea, and Taiwan tea craft pots between 35-75 for 100ml pots.

Im pretty much in the same boat you are, just getting in pu’erh and trying to decipher all the confusion surrounding it.

I will add Bitterleaf, What-cha and Mandala to the sellers. Sample and sample. Your tastes will change and there will be some you don’t care for. When you find your ‘niche’ it is a wonderful thing. If you look to sample factory stuff Berylleb King tea on eBay has an extensive selection. Factory stuff can and some will be fantastic but the smaller producers we have on here have some dang good stuff to offer.

Vinod , welcome to our community , Ken as well as I think you have been here a bit as well.

Yeah ive been around for a bit over 2 weeks now,and drinking tea for a bit over a month. but thats still really new in the scheme of things. And yes, ive noticed that about my tastes changing. I was a lot more bitter adverse just even just a couple weeks ago.

So yes, a work in progress.

Thanks , for info mrmopar and a sweet welcome , I hope soon I will develop some kind of taste and start contributing to this group and if you guys are around salt lake city we can sometime meet for cup of tea with experiences .

@mrmopar: can you suggest something from these sellers which ones you have tried what should i start sampling ?

@Vinud, I am in Virginia but I may travel sometime. Do you have a preference between sheng or shou? There are nice varieties out there. Also are there any tastes or notes in a tea that you look for or any you want to avoid. I could probably give you a direction at least with that info. There is just so much out there. I followed you and if you do the same to me we can message a bit easier if that works for you.

We have a growing tea scene here in Las Vegas not too far from you, next weekend is the southwest tea festival at the lucky dragon casino.

I’ll second these recommendations. I’ve taken advantage of the Verdant tea and White 2 Tea offers.
Welcome to a great hobby!

@mrmopar sheng is my preference , I prefer fruity undertones but I am open to new things at present I am not able to get all nuances thats because I havent done much sampling . Thanks wildeherz

@ken , enjoy the great company and teas :)

Vinod is there a preference for getting it all from or does it matter if you had three or four? I could probably get you started from there.
