White2tea club

So, I see there’s no discussion about it, so I think it would be nice to start one to discuss each month’s deliveries.

I still haven’t got February yet (It will arrive on monday) but I’d like to hear what you think of it.

I started this subscription and my first delivery arrived earlier this week. It was two small bags of long jing plus a bag of pu erh. I am anticipating the pu erh to be rather controversial and I’m looking forward to hearing other people’s feedback. Mrmopar, have you tried the pu erh yet?

mrmopar said

Not yet. I always air the older stuff a bit. It was said to be humid/damp during its life.

Please post tasting notes, my curiosity is getting the better of me!

I respond in kind by posting tasting notes of Yunnan’s raw pu’erh and Verdant’s monthly offerings.

Long jing was excellent. The aroma was very nutty and roasted. The flavour brewed out quite quickly but what it produced was superb.

OK. The pu erh was undrinkable. The enclosed notes stated it was stored in a dank basement in China (or similar wording, I can’t quite remember) and that one probably two rinses would be required. I got to about 6 rinses and could not drink any of them. My colleague at work could smell is from his desk and said it smells like the garden rubbish bag that has gone off. The dank musty smell and taste was overpowering. I think TwoDog may be pushing the limit here. If I hadn’t heard so many positive reviews of this club, I wound have canceled my subscription. $30 not well spent

Where do you live? if its a dry area, wrap it in kitchen parchment for a few weeks, that will take out some of the dankies. Im still fairly new at this, but this is what Ive heard to get rid of dank smells…

Im guessing it was quite dark colored?

I wonder what happened. I tried the tea today (I just got the package so I didn’t have a chance to leave it open for a few days) and I liked it a lot.

Too bad you missed the heicha month back in 2016 then, lol.

Nothing will take this dankness out. It really is extraordinary. I’m tempted to throw the rest away, but I’ll be interested to see what others say. If this wasnt from White2tea it’ll be in the bin by now. But… There may just be some angle I’m missing.

‘Undrinkable’ sounds like a pretty good way to describe the 200X. I actually found the wet storage flavor/aroma in this particular tea to be pleasant, but usually I have to air out wet storage puer for quite some time before I find it palatable. Looking back at the slip included with the club, I’m surprised TwoDog didn’t give instructions to let the tea air out for a month+ before drinking. I wouldn’t recommend throwing away the rest of the sample yet – just leave the sample bag open and forget about it for awhile, probably the longer the better. When you chance back upon the bag and it no longer smells bad, then it should be ready to drink.

Also, its worth mentioning that Paul isn’t adverse to semi-regularly sending out stuff in the club that needs to be aired out/rested. There was a heicha log he sent out in an earlier club that I thought had some impressive qi, but smelled revolting. When one of my roommates came home later, they commented on the smell and I said that they might be smelling my tea, and I was told “No, you’d NEVER drink anything that smelled THAT bad.” The log has been sitting in the garage in purgatory for over a year now, and I suspect it’s still not ready.

It sounds like the club is very entertaining to say the least.

I will second on the heicha log. I think this one needs to be aired as well. Dry age it for a while at least 6 months if it has that too humid note. Break it up as well to increase the surface area exposed.

For what it’s worth, I drank this today, after having opened the bag for a couple of days, and thought it was pretty great; more complexity to it than in most trad stored teas I’ve had. That said, I’m not at all averse to dankness, so mileage pretty clearly varies.

It’s partly a matter of taste. I’ve decided I’m just not into wet storage, after having tried several highly rated exemplars (White Whale and a few EoT samples). Whenever I see camphor in the tasting notes, I know it’s not for me.

Huh. It’s been awhile since I’ve had it, but I don’t remember thinking the White Whale was particularly wet. Which just adds to your point that it’s partly a matter of taste.

Also, kind of an aside – I have no idea what people mean by camphor.

haha. i forgot i have that log in a cabinet. i wasnt gonna touch that thing for another couple years. way too smokey. i wish i could try the 200X but i cancelled my subscription when all the black and wuyi teas started coming in the boxes.

You’re right, this tea is undrinkably bad. You should all send your remaining samples to me for safe disposal.

I was wondering about starting a thread to discuss Yunnan sourcings and verdant’s tea club offerings as well, though I wonder if one combined thread might be better than a bunch of little ones.

I loved last year doing the ys premium club, but ended up with too much red & green tea. Turns out I don’t drink enough of those, and currently, money is a bit tight, so had to let it go.

When I’m more settled in going to restart the oolong one. I will drink all good oolong in my path, haven’t found one yet I don’t like :)

The club has nice teas and all, but I only join for the months that they do house-pressed puer. I believe that their strong points are puer pressed by Paul himself.

Babble said

How do you know when they are going to be doing them those months?

They usually post photos on Instagram/snapchat beforehand.

Ken said

Yeah I just spotted march.

If you join in the middle of feb, do you get feb or march? Im very tempted for march.

@Ken

As long as you join before March – Even if its a few days before march rolls around.

Ken said

Good to know!

Babble said

Dang you got me wanting to join for march too. Would you recommend it? How easy is it to cancel?

Ken said

okay im a doofus who doesnt read the faq, it says right on there. If you join in the middle of the month, you get it the next full month. Also as far as Babble’s question, you hit the unsub button and then they dont bill you next month.

What worries me is I wont ubsub… lol!

When I was curious about joining the club a couple of years ago, I read all of Oolong Owl’s reviews to get an idea of what was included. I was a member for awhile but stopped at the end of last year. Too much non-puerh for me. But if you like to experiment and try different kinds of teas, it’s a great club. It’s nothing if not an adventure every month!
