I have not been on steepster that long, but have interacted with Liquid Proust through Reddit a good bit (he is way too good at getting people addicted to puerh)

I’m interested in the puerh box and live in Colorado.

Thanks for putting this together!

Oh! Been waiting for these to come back around. Would love to do pure puerh, but I’ll do puerh plus for now. In Florida.

Update: Things are real busy at work so it may be a while before I get everything sorted out. Looks like we have enough people for both boxes, though I will continue to take signups for another week or two.

Hi: I have only been on steepster for a few months, I have written several tasting notes if that helps. I would like to know more about the boxes and will read the post from earlier. I have had about 15 different pu-erh teas and just can not wrap my head around them. That said I would like to try again, so I would appreciate it if I could get in on this. Please let me know. Thanks.

I dont see any pu’s under your tasting notes, what have you tried and where did it lose you? If you let us know where the trouble is we might be able to point you at some different teas.

The two most common is young raw is too bitter, and ripe is too stanky..

@Oceanica: You need to follow me so I can PM you. Please let me know what state you live in. I’m plotting the route and like to minimize distances to save on postage.

Hi Dr. Jim, I am now following you. When you PM me, please explain how this works — I have a pretty good idea from previous posts, but I don’t want to mess anything up. Thanks, Mark

PS. So far my favorites are 2005 Mengku Wild arbor " Zheng Shan Da Ye ", 2001 Xiaguan 8653, 2005 Menghai " Pu Er Sheng Zhuan, and 2002 Ancient Spirit fro YS. I would appreciate any recommendations for YS brand since they have a sale on now. I have not cared for any of the ripe — just too much work for too little reward. Thus far any " bitterness " has not been an issue at all…

One of my current favorites is the 2014 Mang Fei Mtn Old Arbor. I also like the purple teas on a price/performance basis for both sheng and black.

Hi: Well, mostly the pu-erh I have tried is just too much barnyard and compost….so I am thinking I would stay away from ripe pu-erh. But even the raw teas have had too much of that for me. I don’t mind it in the background ( see my tasting note on Verdant Jin Jun Mei — the " petting zoo tea " ). I think rather than go this box route I would be better off trying some sample from YS or some other folks but I am not sure where to start. I like complexity and balance above all else — I do " get " the cha qi thing I sort of found out by accident ( there are some really great Wulongs which early on led to some interesting experiences at work! ). So any recommendations would be helpful. Since samples are not too expensive, I don’t really care about price at this point. When whole cakes come into play that will be a consideration. I just don’t want to leave any stones left unturned. Thanks, Mark

Hopefully you will wind up after me, Ill put some Green Miracle in the box, its a lightly fermented ripe, I usually recommend this one to the ripe is too stanky people.

Green mark mixed ripe/raw is another option, also teavivre’s aged ripe. They are dry stored so most of the fermentation flavor has gone out of it.

Also how are you brewing it? Gongfu in a gaiwan?

oceanica said

Hi: Mostly gongfu but I also use a gaiwan from time to time. I just ordered the following Sheng from ys: 2007 Menghai Silver Da Yi, 2005 Meng hai sheng zhuan, 2005 wild tree ye sheng cha of Dehong, 2006 Feng Qing 7813, 2005 Mengku wild arbor Zheng Shan Da ye, 2001 Xiaguan 8653 iron cake, 2006 Changtai Tian Xia Tong An, 2002 Yi Wu Ancient Spirit, 2006 Jing Long Yi Wu, 2002 Jian Cheng Ye Sheng Gu Cha. Mostly samples, I am thinking this might be the best way to start rather than a traveling box just now. I amy request to do the box next time when I would have more pu-erh tea to contribute.

Sign up for the Puerh plus box, its made for people who want to try puerh, have plenty of tea to contribute, but not as much Puerh.

HaiWan teas are fermented to a lesser degree than most shous. They may be an option for a different shou to try.

Ken said

I have a haiwan cake , I can definately add some of that in if people are interested.

Is there a status thread for this box? Or is this it?

For the sheng box we have been using this thread:

And I believe Puerh Plus is here: https://steepster.com/discuss/15996-puerh-plus-ttb-number-4-new-routing
